I love shawn lane! A lot of shredders seem to shred because they can, its like an act. Shawn seems to shred because its his style and he really feels it. Thats my take at least

@duendeflamenco87 Lane is a genius for sure .. ive just never seen anyone else shred two boards at the same time ... but Long Live Shawn Lane man he is a God :) .. i guess its easier for some people just to critisize like you... as if its some kind of compatition ... i would never say unmatched there all good. are you?
@dfguitarblues im just saying the truth. Music is not playing fast...and Batio doesnt shred on 2 guitars, he just TAP them, and there's no music, there's no soul. You were the the fist person wrote the word: "Batio" on the comments, so take a look a yourself on a mirror buddy.
@duendeflamenco87 i guess i was wrong i thought Batio was reconised as the worlds best altho he isnt my cup of tea at all , like you said no soul (i prefer Dave Gilmore style or Adam Jones) , Peace Man
@dfguitarblues when i started playing i liked shred, and now i dont. But there you have (had) Lane, Steve Morse, Richie Kotzen, Greg Howe, and many other guitar players, great combinations between technique and true MUSIC. Well, thats my opinion, i agree, Gilmore is extremely soulful. Cheers bro
Shawn was shooting for the stars man. I love musicians/artists that go beyond their comfort zone. It gets hairy sometimes, mistakes and whatnot but even those can become beautiful. Shawn was and Still is awesome and I find it Funny that the other guitar player that comes to mind, that pushes the Envelope was Shawns Idol (ALLAN HOLDSWORTH) who he saw at a FREE concert when he was 20. Shawn said it changed his musical life that day. U can hear the influence, if not melodically than passionately
Ive been listening to music and musicians for nearly 50 yrs,and within 5mins of hearing this guy play can honestly say, there has never been a better guitarist.RIP mate, you have made a happy man very old.
Good god, a lot of people talks about Lane's mind-blowing speed, and that's a fact : but his bending techniques are just as...flawless, tasty, and jaw-dropping !
It's sad that we lost him, because he would have continued to harness his unparalled technique and skill with phrasing and space, and it would have been quite something. Not that he wasn't already, though.
this is coming from someone who knew shawn well . he didnt think of himself as great . he was absolutely the most humble , modest person i have ever known. he considered piano his main instrument not guitar and i know people that met him and spoke at length and he never even told them he played music . i feel honored to have known him as a friend and musician and have always said the world would not begin to understand shawn til long after he had left our world Kevyn Williams

Yer dead on about he deserved attention. I have to say, I dont like the style sometimes, but from a guitar players perspective I just cant get my head round his ability and dynamic playing (too good).
From what Ive seen of him talking also he comes across as one of the most innocent, warm hearted people you could meet.
Why is wisdom and genius talent normally accompanied by so much suffering. Despite that, Im happy hes not suffering anymore
Too bad he was lost from this disease. Medicine & doctors my ass! The Legend is lost. My friend had also psoriasis and was cured with pulsed electromagnetic field therapy aka PAPIMI.
@Audioslayer it really didnt matter . when i worked at strings and things in memphis , shawn would come by for picks or whatever and pick up a squier thru a peavey ( yuck ) and make it scream . the dude had immense finger tone

When slowly performing, Mr. Shawn Lane becomes Mr. Mike Stern that it grows fat before the age. The phrase of Be-bop is thought to be a pattern even though the factor.
Honestly, you don't even need to resort to saying "in my opinion" to say that Shawn Lane was the best guitarist in history. All the virtuosos look up to him. Just watch the "Shawn Lane Tribute" video.
Of all the players I've heard who could be described as "shredders", Shawn Lane played the most complex and dynamic stuff. Most shredders I've heard tend to play scalar patterns which, if played at anything other than hyperspeed, would get boring fast. If you took what Shawn Lane "shredded" and slowed it down, it would be more like Coltrane than repetitive arpeggios. That's how it sounds to me, anyway.
@Aijalon2520 being a friend of shawns , i can tell you why . shawns phrasing had nothing to do with guitar . not only b/c he played piano amazingly but he thought of phrasing more like wind instruments like sax and clarinette. you should have heard him on a guitar synth . he was/is the greatest MUSICIAN on earth or any other planet. i miss hanging out with him . he was the most intelligent person i have ever met . and not just about music , about everything
ok, last comment from me on lane vids haha.. because I'm not that much of a fan really... just figuring out what the fuzz is over this guy... I heard him play with Jonas Hellborg in 1994 I think.. he's got chops for sure.. I have heard other people shred tastier though.. his finest moments I think were when he let us hear his phrasing ability.. or the E.Johnson like vibrato at around 2.08..
Had some health problems... medication he needed to take for these problems contributed to the weight gain. He never stopped smoking either apparently, so that's a killer in itself (for some folks).
An old friend of mine from the Kingsbury days and well beyond. I miss seeing him here in Memphis ,schooling all other musicians on how to actually play.Me included. There will be no other.
Seriously, why do some people always view speed as a detriment to music? Shawn's near unmatchable speed was simply another tool for his artistic expression - right along with his immaculate phrasing and rhythmic diversity. Music is not black and white, please don't imply otherwise.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree. But I think he is just a very fast guitarist. All that rhytmic diversity is nothing more than right hand technique that he has practiced (its robotic) and the left hand is just keeping up. It could be taste ... I liked his oppening minute or so this is something that I remember. all the speed stuff is like background noise and if I was in audience i would loose concentration in what he is doing and drink my beer because he is not saying anything to me with his music.
I think your "it could be taste" comment is where it's at. There's certainly nothing wrong with not being moved by any of Shawn's playing - a wide range of opinions on music is part of what makes it such a rich and diverse art. I don't think it is fair, however, to simply dismiss what he does because it doesn't say anything to you. You're entitled to your opinion, but at the end of the day, that's all it is.
I actually think this is pretty awesome blues stuff, I'm kind of a blues and jazz guy and I think Shawn Lane's great, he doesn't have the best pocket but his chord phrasing is great along with his soloing.
maybe your just not able to comprehend the genius that is expressed in his fast playing. It takes a good musician to recognize a good musician. You don't have to like his fast playing. But if you cannot see the ingenious musical ideas that are expressed then you are not very musically inclined
My non-musically inclined friends see a single linear tap the same as one of Shawn's mind-blasting runs. That's nothing against them of course, but it does exclude them having any credibility when commenting on his playing.
It excludes them from discussion about the physical side of his playing ONLY. They're still perfectly capable of having superior taste in music. You can be a fantastic physical player and still be lame musically, (Malmsteen comes to mind). I think we guitar players sometimes get into the physical side of things rather than the mind and heart. Just about any first year piano student kid can play Fur Elise, but because it's easy-ish to play doesn't make it any less a work of total genius.
That's what I meant. It only excludes them from technical judgment. In fact the world is rife with proficient players who have no versatility or ability to compose something truly genius and melodic.
Some of the best songs ever written were theoretically very easy - but that is composition. A totally different issue however. :)
No offense, you are entitled to your opinion. But I was one of the people in the audience back then...and was usually not paying attention and drinking my beer, until Shawn began to play, and then everyone stopped and listened.
well this is just a jam at namm.. i wouldnt really comment his playing by some little jam session. i would suggest you listen to some of his songs off his albums before you talk about him being just a "very fast guitarist". just my two cents
The the first two minutes, before he goes full-blown shred, is just incredibly tasty playing. The slinky stuff he does @ 1:25 gives me goosebumps. Love that shit. :)
Yeah, sorry, I didn't think that would be too clear, as in math it's a variable and could stand for anything. I actually meant it to mean the "x-factor" meaning that Shawn had something special about his playing, as well as the ability to play a lot of notes cleanly. Cheers.
Shawn Lane is widely accepted as the CLEANEST fastest player to ever hold a guitar. He was the absolute master. Check out some of his slower videos, like Epilogue for Lisa, if you want to hear absolutely beautiful slow melodic playing
Exactly...Shawn played fast as anyone from the get go. It's his note choice, sensitivity and knowing when to flurish is what sets him apart! Listen to Coltrane or Bird or Gillespie or Holdsworth or Gambale and tell them to slow it down!...why? I appreciate the fact they can burn and so should everyone else!
If you could possibly upload the fretless solo of the same gig it would be apreciated as well. I'm greatful for all of the shawn videos you've posted..
@MyShawnLaneVideos i was five days old then! It's a shame not many people my age appreciate music like this, how i wish i could have met him. He is what I aspire to be.
I think you'll find you can call a song whatever the hell you like. I'm going to go and write a classically influenced pop song and call it "Jazz Based Death Metal" now.
I was on a gig in Wichita Falls, TX in about....'78 or '79 seems like, opening for Jim Dandy Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas, and Shawn was the guitar player. He was about 16, a skinny kid doing his homework from school on the road. As awe inspiring then as ever.
Coltrane was also known to be a relentless practice junkie: if he was at someone's house for a jam and they took a break to hang out in the living room, he'd be in the kitchen working on some lines. I'd say Shawn is in good company, and he and Trane were living proof that practice pays off (genius helps too!) Bird also went through a period where he shedded for about 16 hours a day, according to Jamey Abersold.
Bird did it because apparently he took some heat in his early days. Your comment is strikingly familiar to mine on the Shawn Lane and Paul Gilbert jam part 3! Anyways this is awesome stuff, thanks for sharing as always WJ.
Shawn Lane for me doesn't stand out for technical perfection, but for a technique that allowed him to express himself perfectly. I think that's what everyone should achieve.
Lane is ................ oh love him !

Yeah, sorry, I didn't think that would be too clear, as in math it's a variable and could stand for anything. I actually meant it to mean the "x-factor" meaning that Shawn had something special about his playing, as well as the ability to play a lot of notes cleanly. Cheers.

too flashy for my taste. Slow it down, man. quality > quantity
HarryGobbleCock 3 years ago
Shawn Lane is widely accepted as the CLEANEST fastest player to ever hold a guitar. He was the absolute master. Check out some of his slower videos, like Epilogue for Lisa, if you want to hear absolutely beautiful slow melodic playing

'he´s the BEST 'fast player' around' - Vernon Reid
KingTabor 3 years ago
Exactly...Shawn played fast as anyone from the get go. It's his note choice, sensitivity and knowing when to flurish is what sets him apart! Listen to Coltrane or Bird or Gillespie or Holdsworth or Gambale and tell them to slow it down!...why? I appreciate the fact they can burn and so should everyone else!

quality + quantity + x = shawn.

Is it just me or is Bunny consistently flat on every low G?

I hear the same thing.

Nice!
But where'd the head go O_O
Lahed92801 3 years ago
What head??
MyShawnLaneVideos 3 years ago
the head of the piece bro. The "melody" of it. Did they play it? I mean, this IS all blues by miles davis right?
Lahed92801 3 years ago 3
Love this clip. His fingers are magical.
On your old account you had a clip of Shawn playing at NAMM, performing "Time Is The Enemy".
He had a yellow guitar, black pick guard I think. Been searching for it and cannot find it. Do you still have it?
Despond 3 years ago
Yeah i know the clip... it was from NAMM on the 18th Jan 1997.
I'll try and upload it again sometime when i get time (i'll need to rip it again).

Fantastic. Thank you. :)
I wish there was more NAMM clips of Shawn.

If you could possibly upload the fretless solo of the same gig it would be apreciated as well. I'm greatful for all of the shawn videos you've posted..
egits 3 years ago
@MyShawnLaneVideos i was five days old then! It's a shame not many people my age appreciate music like this, how i wish i could have met him. He is what I aspire to be.
tommie997 1 year ago
Exactly. Wouldn't one have to play All Blues in order to call it All Blues?
But he was fast, I'll give you that.

I think you'll find you can call a song whatever the hell you like. I'm going to go and write a classically influenced pop song and call it "Jazz Based Death Metal" now.

I dunno if you can get away with that...

Amazing; I had to laugh at the end when he starts silently practicing impossibly fast licks during the applause!
Gregorypeckory 3 years ago 3
It's amazing; if you want him doing clinic and stuff he hardly stops playing, even when he's talking. Just mindbogglingly good.
ZaphodBeeblebrox65 3 years ago
yeah maybe he thought he'd slightly messed up one 128th note somewhere in his otherwise perfect million note solo and had to get woodsheddin' asap

Gregorypeckory 2 years ago
Bird did it because apparently he took some heat in his early days. Your comment is strikingly familiar to mine on the Shawn Lane and Paul Gilbert jam part 3! Anyways this is awesome stuff, thanks for sharing as always WJ.

Shawn Lane for me doesn't stand out for technical perfection, but for a technique that allowed him to express himself perfectly. I think that's what everyone should achieve.

SICK! That stuff around 2:23 sounds like it's programmed!

It's just magic. Best clean player on an electric - especially for his level of difficulty.
