  • I'm so glad I found this video. My great grandmother used to crochet before she passed and I never had an interest in it until about an hour ago when I started feeling crafty. Being 19 not alot of people my age crochet so it's going to be hard for me to learn but your videos are very instructional and I feel I could retain the information very well. I look forward to crocheting my first blanket or hat very soon. Thank you for helping me get started and I will continue watching your videos to le

  • You sure inspire me!

  • Now, with these videos, I cam teach my grandma and mom to crochet as well!

  • Thank you so much for these videos!! I learned how to knit using YouTube and howcast but couldn't get crocheting using the same methods at all!! I just found your videos tonight, needing to learn to crochet for my daughter's Halloween bag, and they're super helpful! I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find something to help me learn and her costume would go unfinished, I'm knitting the rest of it. Again, thank you!

  • Thanks sooooo much love to crochet

  • Thank you for making these videos. They are very helpful and inspiring.

  • thank you very much,, your videos are very easy to learn from :)

  • thank u very much for helping me to learn crochet

  • Great video!!! I am now on my first steps of crocheting!!!

  • Thankyou so much for your videos, they have been really helpful. One question though. When i finish my first square, i find it is more rounded than yours. Am i making it too loose or too tight?

  • @Loganzweb It does look round on the first part. I pull on the corner chains to make it look more square.

  • That looks really creepy

  • This is not nearly as similar to knitting as I had hoped it would be.

  • @thisindianajo If you look up the Tunisian crochet (aka the afghan stitch) it is a little more similar to knitting. The video I have on the crochet convertible is a slip stitch technique that results in a fabric very similar to knitting. But generally crochet is a completely different type of needlework, as different from knitting as weaving is. I find it useful to learn several differnt needlework techniques.

  • im so confused i just started and i get lost every time as soon as start the 2nd row :(

  • @jordanparshallabc I'm sorry that is happening. Put it down for a while and simply watch the video a few times. Then walk away. Than later watch it again, then pick up the work & try again. Or, you could try another learn to crochet video. My back to basics series is newer and done with a better camera.

  • thank you sooo much, you are really helpful, i just started and im learning with your videos.

  • I need to learn how to do this for a college exam in December and it's so frustrating. Can't seem to get past making a chain :(

  • @shatterdwing Have you tried the other How to videos on my channel? How about the recommended channels on my channel page?

  • Thank you! I just watched like ten videos and you are the ONLY one who explains what a double stitch is. I still have to rip it out and start over because I don't have the tension down, but at least I understand what I'm doing now. ; )

  • I'm loving these older videos teaching how to make a granny square. Thank you! Do you have newer videos teaching granny squares?

  • @ptdlrd They are number 10 on my to-do list!

  • Augh, this is so frustrating. I'm doing your instructions, and I've made about 5 of these things and I keep practicing, but all of my granny squares look like circles with a big mass of string in the middle...am I doing it right? how do I make them more square?

  • @MariSama4444 See how I tug on the corners? That is called finger blocking I do that as I go. That is how you make it more square. Your mass of string in the middle shows me you are not getting the tension right, or you are not finding the center of the circle. There is a video using a paper clip to help find the center. Search the videos on my channel. It's called "Crochet Tips, Granny Squares, finding the center" Also check out the videos by other teachers like Mikeyssmail & TJW1963 .

  • @Bethintx1 Thankyou! I'll give it a try and see how it comes out..I tugged on some of the corners I already did and I see what you're saying now. Also, I have alot of issues keeping my tension good while I'm doing this, I just need to keep practicing I'm sure.

  • Thank you so much for your video tutorial!! I was stuck on the first chain step for so long, but after watching this, it broke it down and made it so simple, thanks so much!!

  • nice love it!!

  • haha this is AWSOME!! Can't wait to get me some supplies to start!! Thanks!!

  • U were a lil 2 fast 4 me and didn't explain were 2 insert the needle sometimes.

  • @bluebaby61593 Try to pause and re-watch the parts you miss. I also have a video response taking you to my newer Back to Basics series...Or you can try some of the other crochet teachers here on You Tube. I know TJW1963 and Mikeyssmail both have excellent tutorials on how to crochet the granny square.

  • Thank you!

  • My grams tried to teach me to crochet, but I never "got" it. I tried to learn in other ways, but I never "got" it. Today, my 5th child wanted to learn to crochet a granny square. Since I am not able to help her myself, I googled and found your videos. The are so clear and easy to follow. Thank you. I think I'll stick with knitting, but I am thrilled that I FINALLY understand some of the basics of crochet. Grams would be thrilled. Thanks!

  • thank you soo much!! i only knew how to make a chain. and i have always been trying to learn on my own. My aunt told me to search up lesson here and i did. everyone else goes really fast but you helped me out

  • @snugglebunnies1234 Aunts are great! Mine taught me to read crochet patterns. But my cousin actually taught me to make the granny square & how to crochet.

  • i feel dizzy.... ~~~

  • This is incredibly helpful. Much easier than knitting by FAR. Thank you!

  • i keep trying and i've switched to a lighter yarn to try and see it better but i just keep making knots. it's really frustrating; yours look really neat!

    i'm going to keep trying.

  • really great vid~

the person who invented crochet is crazy. (good way). Crochet is wicked!

  • I'm getting the feeling that trying to learn to crochet from a youtube video isn't my best bet. I've been trying to figure it out for over a year now, and even following directions to a tee is getting me nowhere.

  • @Scribesh Have you tried my Newer back to Basic videos? They are much clearer.

  • @Bethintx1 I did look, but it's not the clairity that's the problem for me. Half of it is that I'm south pawed, so that always makes crafty things a little difficult. But it never looks right. Even my chains seem knotted. (and those I've been practicing for over a year.) I guess I'm a classroom learner where yarn is concerned.

  • @Scribesh AAAH, Now I understand. TJW1963 and Mikeyssmail have left-handed tutorials...I do not have the software they have to present the video in mirror image. You can set up a mirror by your computer to watch mine left-handed if you want. It might help. I do have a friend who learned to crochet right-handed and she is left-handed. It took her a while, but she did it...but her teacher (I) sat beside her.

  • @Bethintx1 /chuckles/ That is the crux of the matter. I was going to take a class, at the local craft store. But I didn't have the $34 to spare.

  • awesome- dunno what this is supposed to look like but I just crochetted a little hamburger patty!

YARN OVER... DRAW IT THRU YALL.

    WE GONNA CROCHET THE WORLD.

  • How do you do it so fast??

I'm so confused! How do people think crocheting is easier than knitting!??!

  • @MarmaladeMonster Some folks find knitting easier. I find crocheting easier because I don't drop stitches. This is a very slow video. You can try to learn from my other back to basics video if this is confusing to you. They have a clearer picture and a different technique. I've been told that other teaching videos are faster than mine. But you can check them out anyway by doing a You Tube search, or going to the ones I recommend on my channel.

  • @Bethintx1 thanks :)

My aunt said she would teach me, but she hasnt done any crocheting or knitting in years,

I might also try to get a book, but I think having somebody showing me is best

Right now all I can make is long endless chains!

  • Sorry to double post, but i have a question. i noticed you always bring the yarn around the hook from the back to the front, but when you connect a chain to a previous piece (around 7:00) you keep pushing the hook from the front, through to the back. is this the standard way to do it, or are you just doing the same thing out of habit?

I am new to this, so i guess my question is 'does it matter what way i wrap my hook, and does it matter which way i stab the hook when i connect 2 pieces?'

  • wow. this is a nice tutorial. I cant keep up though, its not that you are going to fast or explaining it poorly, you are explaining everything your doing really well, and being thorough about the steps, but when i go to try it myself, it looks nothing like what you have... what is the secret? mine keeps coming out lopsided, and then i have problems putting the hook through the loops, and i end up taking only half the yarn back through the loops and making a mess... is there a secret?

    Great tut!

  • @oaney Practice is key, so is using the right hook for you. Check out my video talking about the different hooks called Crochet Tools Part 1.

  • *looks at the end result on the video-looks down at what's in hands-starts over for the 73rd time* Dang nabbit. I'm getting it, but it's slow. This video is awesome, thanks!

  • thanks for the lesson me and my mom finally got the circle right yes!!!!

  • i cant do it i thinks i gonna stay with just the chains, lol! i made a collar for my cat, lol!

  • mine keeps coming out to be a circle...

  • your voice is so soothing.

  • thankz so much lesson 1 waz a good help thiz iz kind of hard

  • mine did NOT look like that. lol! i'll be sure to practice! i learned a lot for this vid though! thanks :)

  • Thanks! Can u speak a bit louder next time i cant realy hear you (Sorry)

  • I do. This is from 2007 before I had a camcorder. the microphone is on the other side of the camera, and I was really shy about recording my voice too. Check out the new videos on my channel for clearer tutorials.

  • On "beginning chain 3" I have to chain 2. If I chain 3 it leaves a big space between the chain 3 and the first double crochet. Does this matter?

  • Lol... My sisters looks like a waffle xdd

  • Thanks a lot for making this video, it's very helpful. Mine also looks like a giant knot but I'm getting there gradually :)

  • oh thank you so very much.... I've been working so hard trying to figure this out on my own!!!

  • mine always just ends up looking like a giant knot ):

  • I am trying really hard but I'm left handed so i have to do everything backwards which makes everything so much harder. But your lessons are the first that i can actually follow. I'm only at the first corner but mine looks nothing like yours, it just looks like a big knotty circle! I am going to start over and try to do it with my right hand I suppose.

  • Thank You so much !!!

  • Yours looks like a circle.... Mine looked more like a basket. Odd. :/ And so I try again!

  • you rock!

  • I just learned your granny square, but how do I put them together? Is there a tutor lesson for that? Thanks, shirley

  • I have a tutorial on the continuous join method. It's really not a beginner method, but you could try and follow the videos and see. You could whip (hand sew) stitch them together too.

  • Thank you so much...I've just completed three squares so far thanks to your help! Love it!

  • Hi im 18 male and i want to thank you i can only imagine how your lessons are in person your really sweet and specific thank you so much

  • this is the best how to crochet video ever! 5 star

  • i cant do the last coner, its too hard!:(

  • i found this very useful

and i like the way you answer all the questions so promptly

    please answer my question

i am from the uk and i wondered if this was the only way to learn to crochet

or is this the bes t way to learn

i knit and have done for over 30 yrs

i made a granny square baby blanket 27 years ago but havent done any crochet since this was the only time i crocheted

can i learn to do crochet in rows

  • There are many way to learn how to crochet. I'm teaching using a granny square because that is how I learned when I was 11 years old. Search You Tube for crochet tutorials or lessons and you will find various teachers teaching in different ways. remember the terminology in the UK is slightly different that the US, so you might want to find a European teacher.

  • I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!!! they are so easy and your voice is way soothing to listen to. :)

  • i dont believe in the whole ancient stuff how could anybody be in the world before got ever made the world

  • huh? what are you talking about?

  • i mean god not got sorry

  • What does that have to do with this video or what I said about ancient Celts? I do know what you mean but I quoted no dates or time periods.

Study the Bible. The Old Testament is full of ancient people!

  • hey i study the bible i am upc and the ancient people who are in the n t were people who came AFTER god made earth

  • im sorry i didnt mean any offense through anything i said but thats the way i believe

  • Hey. No offense taken. I too am a Christian. I went to Tennessee Temple Bible College. I understand what you are saying. I also believe that the Earth is not billions of years old. But I do believe ancient people existed, just not as far back as scientists are saying. My remark was just noting that there is evidence of men crocheting & knitting waaaaay back in history.

  • This video is great!!

  • Thanks Beth. yeah, sure. I'm not the kind of guy who cares about people's saying. I just do what I like to do, and crochet is fun. My girlfriend even loved me more knowing that I will start making stuff like that hehe. Please keep teaching us! I love you!

  • lol, I'm a boy and really love this circle.. I found myself buying a crochet needle and threads and do it. it's very clear :D Thank you for the great job!

  • My first boyfriend crocheted too. Many men crochet & knit. Some historians believe that ancient Celtic fishermen crocheted their nets and knit the sweaters they wore out on the cold north seas.

Do not let anyone tell you that its not manly to crochet.

  • okay so i am cool till you put the hook in the center and then i am totally lost! i am sorry but can anyone help me??

  • What is happening is we have made a circle. all of our stitches on the first round will go into that circle like a wagon wheel.

  • Your video is by far the best on the tube .

Do you have one for knitting I would love to learn to knit also, witch one do you think is the easiest crochet or knitting.

    Thank you

  • Thanks! I learned to crochet when I was 11. My cousin showed me the Granny square. Then when I was 13, I learned to read patterns & my whole world open up! I didn't learn to knit until my late 20's. So, for me knitting is more difficult.

  • Its really hard to follow cause the screen is blurry. YouTube graphics suck. -_- I really wanted to make a beanie too D:

  • I'm also trying to do a blanket for my baby due in April. I have no idea where to start lol. I've been practicing this video for hours and I think I'm finally starting to get it ;D

I greatly appreciate the videos :)

  • This is my first crochet project. I want to make a ripple afghan for my grandchild due in January. Do you have video instructions for the ripple afghan? Thank you so much. Your videos are very easy to follow.

  • I have watched several different videos on here today trying to teach myself how to crochet. Your series is the best. I finally got it. Thank you.

  • You are welcome! If y'all have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Thanks so much for these videos. I can't believe that I can do this! Is your pattern available to download?

  • I have no written pattern for this one.

Once you make a square, you likely will not need a pattern.

There are written granny square patterns available at the many free patterns websites.

Google "Free Crochet Patterns" and you will be overwhelmed by the numbers of free patterns available.

  • i am never going to get this

  • Keep on trying. I know you can do it!

  • Thanks so much! I listened to your comment and it totally worked out! I now own at making granny squares! :-)

  • Yay!

  • I get what you're doing and so far I've been doing it right, but every time i start my granny square everything just ends up as a circle...will this fix itself as i go on or is it the yarn im using or my tension? I'm just confused at the moment

  • The start usually does look like a circle. If you tug lightly on the chain-2 loops for the corners, it will look more like a square, but that is not necessary. It will square up in the following rounds.

  • Thank you for the instructions - my "wheel' looked like a clump of yarn. I tried my best to follow, but I just could not get it.

  • I am planning on making some new videos on extra tips on making the granny square.

Make the chain 4, then take a safety pin, or a paper clip and thread the chain through it, then make your slip stitch to make the ring so the paper clip is through the center of the ring. You then form your stitches where the clip is...I'll make a quick video to demonstrate and add it as a video response to this video.

  • this is so helpful... Thank you!

  • This is too complicated for beginners.

  • Oops! Your reply was posted to browneyez2201 below.

  • Hi, Im very new to crocheting I feel as though I'm never going to get this...I love your video...but help

  • Many beginners do fine with this. I learned to crochet doing a granny square when I was 11 years old.

If you are having trouble with my teaching methods, try going to TJW1963.

    Her beginner tutorials are pronominal!

Also Mikeyssmail has some good ones.

  • lol that is so cool.

    i used to crochet,

but then i stopped for a while.

forgot how to do everything lol.

the granny square reminds me of a cookie lol.

  • is it just me...or does this go too fast? it's really in depth at first and then it goes into fast-forward....I'm trying to learn to do this so I'm really slow

  • I did that because I tried to keep it under 10 minutes. Plus it is repetitive. You can click and hold the slider below the video to pause and move it more slowly.

  • Thanks for the fabulous video.Great teaching!

  • Hmmm, mine looks like a circle rather than a square! Im confused!

  • It often does look more like a circle. Just make sure you have 12 double crochet stitches in the circle!

  • ok well im doin good it just looks like a circle more than a box.

  • It will look like a circle at first. If you watch closely, you can see me tugging on the piece. I'm blocking (shaping) it with my fingers as I go. Many folks wait until it's finished to block it.

  • omg bc of u im learning how to do it. thank you so much

  • Oh! I'm glad! I was trying to link you to other teachers when you posted that you were having trouble on lesson 1.

  • yea thank you.

  • Is this the easiest one to start with? My sister's pregnant and i want to Crochet her a blanket. Ive never crochet'd before but this looks awsome.

P.S Your voice is really soothing hehe

  • This is how I learned to crochet when I was 11 years old... That is why I chose the granny square to teach crochet.

  • Thanks Beth I'm going to buy some Hooks and yarn and have a go. Keep with the video's there Grrreat :)

  • ur video i really good. even though i uses a smaller, thinner needle and a different type of yarn mine came out similar 2 urs!!!!

    thanx :)

(i hate the instructions in the book they make no sense to me :S)

  • when i made it the first time it was too tight it looked like a circle, but the second try looked just like yours

thanks for the great tutorial, i'll keep watching your videos

  • This is great! I always need a video demo instead of reading an instruction book so I can see the stitches, and you did a great job!

  • ughh,I am getting so confused? Mine looks nothing like that. Help?!

  • How different is it? Try starting over. Pause at each step. Perhaps you will see what went wrong. I cannot help if I do not see what you have done.

  • helloiliketocrochet

  • Hi Beth I just want to say thanks so much for your wonderful vid How to Crochet. My nan showed me when I was a girl, but over the years I'd forgotten. I have been crocheting the last 2 days since I did your tutorials and now my 17 yr old daughter Caitlin is starting off her own square with your (and my) help. We are going to try to make a granny square rug together for a winter project (we're down under!) So thanks again, very pleasing result, I'm on my 2nd (large) square already!!

  • I made it through half of the second lesson... my corners look more like circles??????

  • Hey thanks to you I was able to get down lesson 1

You explain things so well its great :D

  • help! I have watched several video's and so far yours makes the most sense. But my pattern calls for ch 1, 3dc in ring. So should my round flower look square at the end as yours does? After joining with sl st I have to change colors but cannot figure out how to do it. I can knit but wanted to learn to crochet to make my two year old granddaughter a blanket. Now I am beginning to wonder if I can do it or not.

  • Sorry I didn't respond to your question sooner.

Some patterns start differently. A granny with a flower center will be different.

  • You're really good, thanks for showing this video

  • Haha. I've got yarn burn on my finger from doing this so fast. xD

  • lol...that reminds me of spongebob squarepants when they got rope burn from sliding down a rope...lol...anywayz im so happy i fiinally got it, this tutorial helped me a lot

  • i hate crocheting!!! i can't get it right!!!!!

  • Perhaps you need to put it down and try again later. It's not for everyone. I helped a friend who tried to learn for many years. It took on-on one instruction. Being left handed made it harder for her too.

  • I have been trying for years..ok well maybe not years but seems like forever..how to recreate a afghan my nana made me when I was a wee tot..that has much finer days..and this video series is wonderful!!!! its slow enough so that I can follow and explains everything so that even I can get i..Thank you sooo much!!!

  • Thanks!

  • whoa. thanks for teaching! i had a brain fart for the first few minutes but it made sense after.

  • Great lessons! So easy to follow. Any chance for a Lesson 4 soon?! Pretty please? Thanks!

  • I just wanted to thank you - I've been trying to teach myself how to do this through various online tutorials, and this is the first (and only) one that made it clear how to do this. I can't tell you how excited I am. :)

  • Wait........ I JUST GOT IT!!!!!! :)

  • I know how to knit, but crocheting gets confusing t me then again, that's what i said about knitting.

  • i think this video is great

  • Do you have a video that shows how to finish off the Granny square. I love lessons you have provised

  • Oh, and THANK YOU SO much for posting this!

  • I now have one "granny square" hooked onto my crochet hook.

Can I say OMG!! Everyone I know who knows how to crochet has tried to teach me. Plus several other online tutorials... You're obviously doing something right. (Crocheting has always been something I just didn't get. We've taken to joking that it's hereditary because my mom's mom, who is really crafty, can't crochet either...)

  • what is a granny square?

  • Lol, I was just thinking the same thing.

  • sameeeee.

i was just gonna comment that.

    what is itttt

  • watch the video series. you will find out.

  • i like this becuase she explains every apect of it, and i am a visual learner, so i get it, thanks soo much

  • hahahaha lmaooo omg she doess but its a really good videoo

  • Un*believable! It's quite appalling how self-absorbed some reviewers can be. For goodness sakes, if the video wasn't helpful, just move on. Or better yet, rate the video on content, not some inconsequential point. The author chose to upload this clip to help people, and from the look of it, it seems it does just that. Given the 88,000 views already, I suppose the author could have been 88 grand richer by now if they chose to charge a $1/view. And guess what? They didn't!

  • shut up idiot she's brilliant

  • You people should be more appreciative for people like her wanting to teach other people. Too many rude people in this world.

  • I'd rather someone talk a lot,or "too much", in an instructional video rather than not talk at all,or very little.

  • This is harder than knitting. There is a loot to keep track of. >.>;

  • I think this a great video. I've tried to make granny squares before with no luck. Keep teaching us Bethintx1. I've made 20 squares so far. this is fun, and i'm a 50+ gal. Wonderful vids.

  • Thank you so much, this is really helpful.

  • Very good video! :) I made a king size bed sized afghan for my cousin using the granny square stitch a few years back. whew it was a big task. LOL! I'm working on making Christmas stockings right now but my Mom and I are going to be starting afghans soon...probably the granny stitch again! :) I'm a thrid generation (lefty as well) crocheter. I learned as a teenager and stopped for awhile, just now getting back to it. I love it...relieves tensionforme.LOL Thanks for the videos! -Jen

  • it's in the previous video by this same poster, called how to crochet lesson 1

  • i agree with you=]

  • Thanks for this video too!

Will you be making more videos in the future? :O

  • So, just make it a bigger version of the granny square, some people call it "improvising"
