Horse-flies and deer-flies (and mosquitos too) inject very small amounts of anticoagulants that prevent the blood from clotting while the fly sucks the blood. Some people may develop strong allergic reactions to these anticoagulants.
Horse-flies and deer-flies can spread bacteria of e.g. tularemia and anthrax, diseases which can be fatal. Actually the risk of getting any disease is quite small, as child I was bitten by horse-flies trillions of times, never got any disease...
