  • is the disc blank?

  • *laser* "PEEK-A-BOO!"

  • i had the same problem in my dreamcast...with poor quality cd-r...the lens refused to read the discs, therefor making that noise, but with good ones (Sony specially), reads them instantly...so i adjusted the laser potentiometer (i don't know if it's named like that) a bit (A BIT) to the right...now it reads them all (poor and good) without problems n.n

also you could try changing the lens with a creative cd rom drive, it works like a charm (what i've watched)

  • look out the laser lens can damage your eyes

  • shit give it 2 me ill fix it

  • mira para reparar tu dreamcast necesitas abrir el lente y limpiarlo o sustitullelo por un lector de una pc *debe ser de windows* y terminas la reparacion

  • ive got 2 dreamcasts with the exact same problem. that wont read cd-rs anymore.

i agree with the quality of the cd r being an important factor but thats not the case here cause ive tried everything. any help in fixing it would be highly appreciated

  • @HangingWithChuck1218 Memorex disks seem to give allot of read problems,Ive tried memorex on two different dc's,and same result on both....use Verbatum.Always perfect reads, always.

  • @northllstr I've only been using Memorex and they all work flawlessly, no problems what-so-ever.

  • I think this is because the image you burned isn't a selfboot. I recommend either downloading a Utopia disk or downloading a selfbooting cdi file of whatever game it is you're trying to play. They're easy to come by these days online.

  • I think this may be a ribbon problem. Try manually pulling the optical pickup all the way up, make sure the path is relatively smooth and then try.

  • okay well i figured out that my dreamcast stopped working again, but i followed a tutorial from gamester81 and it still dosent work!

  • men some disk need otopia or need be burn with diskjuggler i using alcohol120% but not all games or imagen worl whit alcohol but if u crreat imagen whit diskjuggler all games will work fine

  • oh yeah, and if you try that and break your dreamcast, i am not responsible for breaking it

  • this is what i did this morning and i fixed it:i took a Q-tip and sprayed windex on it. i alto got a paper towel and some compressed air in a can. first i used the windex on the q-tip to clean the lens of the kaser. than i dried it off with the paper towel. than i used the q-tip and scrubbed around the laser. i found a big clump of dirt that clogged my laser that made it do that. than to prevent getting electricuted i dried the inside with canned air. now that that big clump of dirt isgoneitwoks

  • i just got a dreamcast for christmas today and i burned some great games for it and they all do that. on the screen it says its checking the disk and than it takes me to the music player, if i exit the music player and go to game i will get a message that says "please insert a game disk" and it dosent play, HELP

  • that is because some games are non selfboot so you will need

a utopia boot disc to boot those. google is your friend

  • Mine does that when i try to play a CDI.file on a broken cd-r dont know but it works with any other disc

  • I don't know what to tell you except try and see if you can get a good deal for the real game on eBay

  • Ok to repair this you need oil that makes it run better whitout cracking up the problem you have its that the lent its not broken its stuck.. you need cleaned with oil.. it a special type that leads the lent move faster but dont put too much you put it where are the tracks from the lent its easy and that its how you repair it just tell on frys or any eletronic if then have something like a special oil.. y did this to my pc toshiba because gets stuck... if nothing works then buy a new one...

  • hi, firstly, this is a great video! but can u help me please!! i took my dreamcast from czech republic back to england in the suitcase, but it stopped working ., basically right, when u put a CD in, the disc doesnt spin anymore, even when u try to move it with ur hand, like it sort of stiff.... do u know why this is happened or what i can do to rectify it!??? ? u seem to be a clever engineer!! please let me know, thanks

  • this problem hapend also in the ps1 i really hate that old click! click! and trrrr!! sound it's like making me wants to throw the console from my room window but glad i didn't.

  • i have that problem aswell

  • You are all wrong. That happens when the disc is too close to the laser. Tell you what: disassemble your lens (only the top plastic part, the one who have the 3 little screws) and grab the little plastic wheel (where the cds are put) and pull from it till it starts moving. remove the whole wheel, and start testing where the cd is playing ok, then put some super glue on the wheel (where the little engine goes) and put it back. It worked for me, believe it or not.

  • This could simply be the laser resetting its position (recalibrating its self) if it is having trouble reading the discs.

This is normal behaviour when it is unsure of the disc type/data. Some Dreamcasts (i believe it was the later ones mostly) have trouble with reading CD-Rs. Most will need a boot disc if there is a game on there anyway.

  • depends on the cd try using imations

  • Seems like you got a game there that requires dummy tracks to be added, pushing the game data into the outer regions of the disc.

The CAV player won't recongize this, wow you must have one of the first Dreamcast back-ups that uses dummy files to rectify the constant angular velocity on the disc spinning.

    Interesting.

  • That used to happen to me too when I burned the CD-Rs at MAX. I then changed it to 24x and it worked perfectly.

  • this is kool ye, i use backup games on my dreamcast im wonderin tho can doin so fuck up the laser ?

  • Not inherently more than GDs, nor is it really harmful for mechanics to hit the end.

If something happens, you can get a new replacement optical pickup for 20 EUR or so. It's not much cheaper than a used dreamcast, but the new pickups are higher quality and will probably last at least an extra decade.

  • every cd-r dose that on dreamcast just burn at a lowwer speed

  • But in that case,im sure you dont burn well the cds...

  • Try to adjust the lens...Dreamcast uses TV channel, not AV...

  • Sometimes the laser take too long to find the boot sector on a CDR. Try to remove the CD and close the cover. This would reset the laser position. Then you insert the CD. Repeat the process, this should work.

  • Are you meaning it does this with games that you tried to back up? <only if so: What I know about a GD-ROM is that the information in the inner area of the disc is low density data (what most CD players use PSX, Sega Saturn, 3DO etc.) which is readable by most cd drives and burners but the outside of the GD-ROM is High Density data (were GD is known as Giga Disk) which makes these disk 1GB that cannot be read or burned by a normal burner. so unless u have the Yamaha burner u cant back them up.

  • to all console games you need to Bern the cds at 4x caz it well not work i have a ps2 and i bernd it on 12x it did not read it...

  • ive burned all my DC games at 32X speed on alcohol and they all boot up and run fine...Using any CD-R.

  • It's a coaster.

  • Region COde man

  • what channel do u put it on to make dreamcast work?

  • i put in channel 36

  • depends in uk its AV 1 or 2 or it can just be any channel number

  • no i jst realised i need a frickin arieal thingy

  • mine is almost dead, my lil brother threw it on the floor and the cable was a bit damaged, but still just barely works

  • that is caused by the Region Code

  • there is no region lock on backup games

  • Mine only does that to cds that werent burned at the right speed. Say you burned yourself a copy of Phantasy star online at 12x it would do that, but if you burned it at 4x it would be fine. 12x should be the highest speed you burn any DC game, any higher and you will run into lots of problems.

  • i burn mine at 24x on all my games and they all work perfect

  • I had the same problem,

i fixed it by bend the spring.

    @

  • Please explain

  • The reason it doesn't work is you own a "late" dreamcast where the laser is on the left. You need a dreamcast where the laser is in the top centre.

  • if you look exactly, the laser is on the top and not on the left :P

  • check out my dreamcast fix videos on my page

  • go look at my vidseo on how to fix the disk read error

  • your laser reader is mis positioned there are ways (depending on the model) that you can adjust it yourself, other wise just trash it

  • Something's wrong with your laser. :P

  • it still is aswam

  • How do you fix that

??? I think mine is happening the same thing! I wil try a original GD but im not hopefull!

  • you got a used dreamcast that use to be sirfunnyma's.

  • made in korea thats y. :P
