there was pro-Jacobite support in the Borders, more especially on the English side where there was significant support. Even in the 45 there were English recruits though only about 300 or 400 or so that time. It wasn't about anyone fighting 'the English' though. The Scottish Jacobites only entered England because Charles had convinced them that the English people would rise in support.

There were many Hihglanders in the Hanovarian ranks. At Culloden itself there was only basically some of the Argyl Militia - and perhaps some individual Highlanders in one of the three official Scottish Regiments there. The rest of the militia and the Highlanders in the Independent Companies were campaigning elsewhere in the Highlands. The Black Watch were stationed at London to help protect against a possible French invasion. The Highlands as well as Scotland as a whole were divided
but never the less you can't break it down as Highlander v Lowlander either. The Jacobites received much support from especially the Episcopalian North-East Lowlands and there were many Highlanders in the Hanovarian ranks.

The romanticism will always be with the Highlanders and Prince Charlie. But history teaches us otherwise. The truth is that a unified Scotland did not exist. Two countries existed in one.....Gaelic speaking Catholic Highlanders and the more anglified Lowland Scots who were predominantly Protestants. This was part of a European religious war. Scotland v England it certainly WAS NOT.

Point 1) there were not more Scots fighting in Cumberland's army (of the 20 divisions, only 4 were 'Scots' (and even those had English soldiery). Point 2) The Lowlanders did not all support Cumberland. Many, many lowlanders fought on the Jacobite side. Remember the slogan used by the Jacobite army: Freedom to Scotland and no Union (in Gaelic). A majority of Lowlanders were against the union.

@cr1234678 Acually it is not as straightforward as that. Lars is correct. Highlanders and Lowlanders both fought on both sides. The Episcopalian northern Lowlands veered more towards the Jacobites whilst the Presbyterian southern Scotland veered more towards the Hanovarians. Central Scotland was also split. The east around Edinburgh was more of a mixture - the west around Glasgow was far more solidly pro-Hanovarian. It is only an overview though and shows trends. In earlier rebellions (ie 1715)

The initial army which marched into central Scotland was basically Highlanders with a few Irish (very few) but by the time of the invasion of England and Culloden a fair proporton of the Jacobite Army were Lowlanders (though the clans remained in the front line). The English Jacobites (fewer in number in the 45 but well represented in the 15) were left to their fate by the Prince to defend Carlisle from the Hanovarians.

We have to remember that almost all English are decent people too, Their voting is limited by the stupid system we have making it impossible for them to get a real change of government, Labour/Tory, you couldn't get a 'fag paper between them. It's a big gravy train at westminster.
The newspapers are also pretty biased to them too, that's why we'll get fed scare stories and warnings, one of the best will be, "once you vote out, we won't let you back in" I can smell Labour voters shiting it!

there was pro-Jacobite support in the Borders, more especially on the English side where there was significant support. Even in the 45 there were English recruits though only about 300 or 400 or so that time. It wasn't about anyone fighting 'the English' though. The Scottish Jacobites only entered England because Charles had convinced them that the English people would rise in support.

There were many Hihglanders in the Hanovarian ranks. At Culloden itself there was only basically some of the Argyl Militia - and perhaps some individual Highlanders in one of the three official Scottish Regiments there. The rest of the militia and the Highlanders in the Independent Companies were campaigning elsewhere in the Highlands. The Black Watch were stationed at London to help protect against a possible French invasion. The Highlands as well as Scotland as a whole were divided

the Highlands they were a small minority only. There were Catholic clans who came out for instance various MacDonalds and McNeils etc but most weren't. Those who stringintly opposed the Prestenders tended to be staunch Presbyterians - who had been brutually oppressed by Charles II and James VII (Killing Times) and of course had been in conflcit with Charles I (Civil War period). The uprisings tended to start in the Highlands and the 45 was overall more Highland in character than the earlier ones

Two countries existed in one.....Gaelic speaking Catholic Highlanders and the more anglified Lowland Scots who were predominantly Protestants. This was part of a European religious war. Scotland v England it certainly WAS NOT.

I see that the usual suspects are repeating the usual ignorant nonsense. Point 1) there were not more Scots fighting in Cumberland's army (of the 20 divisions, only 4 were 'Scots' (and even those had English soldiery). Point 2) The Lowlanders did not all support Cumberland. Many, many lowlanders fought on the Jacobite side. Remember the slogan used by the Jacobite army: Freedom to Scotland and no Union (in Gaelic). A majority of Lowlanders were against the union.

@cr1234678 Acually it is not as straightforward as that. Lars is correct. Highlanders and Lowlanders both fought on both sides. The Episcopalian northern Lowlands veered more towards the Jacobites whilst the Presbyterian southern Scotland veered more towards the Hanovarians. Central Scotland was also split. The east around Edinburgh was more of a mixture - the west around Glasgow was far more solidly pro-Hanovarian. It is only an overview though and shows trends. In earlier rebellions (ie 1715)

The religious conflict since the 1640s right up to 1745 in Scotland was Protestant versus Protestant. The big bulk of the Scottish Jacobites were non juring Episcopalians. They were Anglicans. The initial army which marched into central Scotland was basically Highlanders with a few Irish (very few) but by the time of the invasion of England and Culloden a fair proporton of the Jacobite Army were Lowlanders (though the clans remained in the front line). The English Jacobites (fewer in number in the 45 but well represented in the 15) were left to their fate by the Prince to defend Carlisle from the Hanovarians.

@ThePalaeontologist Why? You can't stagnate culture. It changes, by definition. What you see as "British culture" would be unrecognisable 100 years ago. Immigration, assimilation and integration is nothing new nor is it something we should fear.
We tried isolationism, and you know where it got us? Years of economic chaos, cos it turns out countries don't want to cooperate with countries making it hard to do so, leading us begging to be in the EEC.
Less boundaries, less divisions, less hate.

@RedcoatMic24 It saddens me to hear yet another with no logic and reason to see if effort is put in enough, we can do anything. I fear complacency and idleness of minds shall be the ruination of all great plans. Isolationism may cause a difficult economy, but in the long run it is the best thing. Why can't we? Why should we be obliged to give in to capitalist demands? Why should we accept the so called 'inevitable'. War is natural, we are humans and all the same. But politics does have a place.

This does not mean its inhabitants are all British. There are Irish, English, Welsh and Scots inhabiting our islands aswell as immigrants from all over the world. I do read books; I have read books,; and shall read books till I die (and I will not 'go myself', charming) ; I am going to be a professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology, and do not for one second forget that in being so, I would have a great understanding of the genetic history of the British Isles and the rest of the world, and know exactly what it means to be British.

@Dumbledid Listen, this is the truth, people who shout bigot and in your obviously more well educated case, eugenicist, are wrong to do so for people like me who are honestly trying to outline that Britain is the name for the concentrated group of people in the most North Westerly corner of the Eurasian Continent, and that the British Isles is simply the scientific name as well as the political one. Britain owes its name to Greek and Roman historians, and so its just a name, but one to stand by.
