Kid Jensen was wrong about that song getting to number one. It never did. Why did he say it would get to number one when it didn't? Why would he do that?
@Feisty1967 each to his own, but they played the songs dictated by the record company and producers to an extent..not always necessarily the music they preferred.... if you watched and knew more of smokie they were far from boring Chris is hilarious at times.....
I was all prepared to not like the Rubettes because of the first few seconds of the lead singer and his wink. But you know what? It was a nice song and great 3 part harmonies

Was this her first performance on Top of the Pops? Because she looks a bit scared, and relieved when it's over. Probably because she's actually singing live unlike any of the other frauds.
No she had appeared on TOTP a year before to promote her first hit single, Answer Me. This is not even the first time she did TOTP to promote this song - she looked terrified on that occasion and got some of the verses mixed up. But somehow it didn't matter - she has such a glorious voice - and as you say - she was, unlike so many other acts, singing live.
Smokie were nothing more than a pub band and I was too young to drink in pubs in 1977. They were truly lame!

Smokie were in their zenith in bulgaria in 1976 @1977. My colleague Georgi was mad of them. But Chris Norman is really a very charismatic person!
