What the *** was that final note? I checked the piano and I believe it was a high F. I have not heard a sustained high F of this quality since an early recording of Gruberova. Truly amazing. If I recall correctly, Rita Shane sang a lot of Queen of the Nights. No wonder!
Meyerbeer demands singers as Berlioz in Le Troiyan, the Huguenotes is something for real people, it is not bad for an opera singer to have voice the famous hungarian quartet told in Vienna long before the WWII, Toscanini Salzbourg performances were made by those ...and on top of it never forget Kalman Pataky whocould make a better Don Ottavio come to see me in person... hehehehehe
Didn't Shane end up doing "Miss Haversham's Fire" by Argento, a opera that was originally planned for Sills. As I recall, originally Sills was to play both the old and young Miss Haversham (from Dicken's Great Expectations). When the opera was revised, the roles were cast with two sopranos and Shane played the older Miss H.
This is incorrect. Sills did not want to do both parts. Rita Shane was the only soprano who could perform both roles. She played the young Miss Havisham, and the old Miss Havisham.
Thanks for the correction. I must have had it backwards. I know Sills was originally discussed for this opera. Probably it was thought that Sills would play just the old Miss Havisham. When she dropped out, Riat Shane ended up taking over and doing both roles.
Gedda is incredible and the absolute perfect tenor for this role. Although perhaps not as "gut busting" exciting as Corelli, Gedda had the perfect combination of bel canto technique and French diction and style for this role. He also could handle the fiendishly difficult high tessitura without "screaming" or sounding too light and "wimpy" of voice.
@Gruberovito Many thanks for this! Two DIVINE singers!
