She was magical, I was so happy for her, I remember watching this performance on tv.....for sure a moment in time for her.

it's so great how she has these fans that post and watch her videos like 10 years after this. I don't know what it is about her, but I really like her too! I just thought about her the other day and found all these videos!

Maria was such a gorgeous woman on the ice, kudos to her for the trying and proving to herself and others that she HAD it.........a one time opportunity that she didn't take for granted, I miss this type of skating, full of emotion amd maturity, God bless you and your family Maria.

@veboy it wasnt a one time opportunity. She had the gold at the 2000 Worlds next year in the bag but choked.  Like here she didnt even need to beat Kwan in the long program, only come 2nd, and that meant only beating Slutskaya who didnt even skate well. And anyway I think the judges were willing to give Maria the long program win at the 2000 Worlds too. Her short program marks were much higher than the marks for Kwans excellent long program there.

She was such a classy lady - the only real lady on ice with all those teenagers!

I just loved her unabashed femininity. I don't think we've ever had that kind of pure allurement from a skater - from Katarina Witt perhaps.

I was so proud of her here!! She definitely silenced all of her critics by winning the gold here, especially considering everyone else skated well adn the pressure was on. Too bad she didn't do as well the following years, but she's still one of my favorite skaters!

What makes this even more amazing is that she was under ENORMOUS pressure: She was in first after the short, AND Russians had won gold in all the other skating events! @mlc2005 she deserved the gold but Kwan in no way deserved the silver. Kwan had a pretty good long program and deserved 2nd in that probably. However her short was a huge gift, should have been 7th or 8th in the short. The other 2 medalists here should have been Malinina and Rechnio actually. Rechnio was screwed by the scores in both programs, and Soldatova was also overmarked.
