As Americans, we have made some very STUPID moves with our municipal/urban & regional transit systems, throughout our nation.. (dismantling of trolley/street car lines, passenger rail service/operation, favoring automobile infrastructure over mass transit, etc)... Man are we paying the price for such negligence today..
Absolutely disgusting. This is your tax dollars at work. Millions were spent to develop and purchase and rehab these vehicles and all to end up in scrap in a landfill. They could have lasted 10-15 years more at least.
This is a terrible way to recycle scrap light railway vehicles! They could have used an army of people to disassemble and segregate everything instead they just tore everything up with a CAT that looks like it has The Alien's head! And I bet everything ended up in a landfill.
Wow, I only got to ride on one of these once or twice, by complete luck, since I didn't take the "T" until late 2004 and only sporadically after that. Any word if the one at Seashore is going to run in 2011?
@2001rtm There are still more blue line cars left, so it's not an opportunity missed yet. This video was filmed while we were there doing business for Seashore's car. When we did the work to get our Blue Line cars, they stopped the scrapping altogether to prevent our cars from being mistakenly destroyed. So there was no scrapping going on while we were there.

how do you all know all this random stuff about which individual train car is where? and how can i gain some knowledge on stuff of this nature....where do they house all the old trains? im in boston all the time and have always wanted to see the "less-seen" areas...storage etc...but ya kno.....dont want to get arrested... maybe i should just try and get a job for the T...... would be the best friggin job in mass.......but i cant cause i smoke pot to relax instead of drink. LOL
San Francisco's Muni ran these same cars. They were awful. They didn't have enough doors, especially important because half the time the doors wouldn't open. Boeing should've stuck to building planes.
@sideslide23 Accident? Meet insurance. Car breaks down? Meet insurance. Repo man? You have the wrong address, because my car is paid for. I work out of my home.
It is a pity that they destroyed them. I think many Eastern European cities wanted to buy it from second hand! Some tram systems in Romania which are fading away in recent years bought second hand trams from Germany and there is a big demand for low floor trams in Europe. Selling could be cheaper than destroying! Which city where they running in and what type replaced them?
instead of ripping those old railcars up why not do like we do here in NYC., we throw old subway cars in the water ( in the Atlantic Ocean) and of course presvre some old railcars at the same time..
i like the idea of taking everything off and throwing them in the river better. they wasted some good parts that could've been used to restore a couple others
i've been in these and it is really sad having to see them go like that they have really good parts and they should at least save the good parts i wish this never had to happen i am a very conservative person and some change is really hard 4 me
@parejopinto you do realize that these things were constantly breaking down, Had derailment issues and the plug doors they had were nothing but problems.
@parejopinto One good thing the Breda has going for it is its low floor which enables someone in a wheelchair to board (required by law these days). that is not possible in a Boeing
None taken, I'm not saying that Seashore will do wonders for the LRV, just giving an update for anyone who's interested. I agree Seashore's collection isn't all perfect and thats understandable. They have so many old trains to take care of with little resources. But I do think its good that Seashore is getting one. I know for a fact that they are converting it to trolley poles and going to (at least try) to have it running, whatever happens to it it's good that at least one escaped the scrapper
This will happen in about six years and the T is looking to scrap some right now. There are 6 cars in dead storage due to massive and extensive collision damage(way beyond repair) and a few were scrapped a few years ago due to the same result.
The type 8 fleet doesn't even make up half of the entire green line fleet. (95 Type 8s, 120 Type 7s). The next order of (Type 9 cars) will be needed to cover the service requirements for the Somerville extension, to be completed in the next 5-10 years. The Kinki-Sharyo cars are just over 20 years old, and have yet to have a mid-life rebuild. They aren't going anywhere for at least 15 to 20 years, MINIMUM
Rather unfortunate, yes. I would say that Boeing should have stuck with what they knew, except that their cars for the CTA are still in service...along with a bunch PCCs that the LRVs were supposed to replace.
The trolley museums are going to have big problems repairing these vehicles in the future because of all of the obsolete electronics in them. The really old vehicles used mechanical switches to operate. These switches can be repaired and adjusted to keep the cars going. They can even machine new parts for them as necessary.
With the newer cars, the computer chips and semiconductors are no longer manufactured, so when a car goes down, they can't repair it.
Sad, too bad the parts like the rollsigns couldnt be saved for collectors or transit buffs. Still, neat footage, how'd you manage to find out where this was gonna happen?
I agree with most that has been said. This video has made me so sad when I have watched it. I know these trains sucked, but I don't know, it's just something about them I miss. I would love to ride one of them, just one last time like previously said... Does anyone know when the SLRV is going to be shipped down to the muesum?
There is still a boeing lrv at riverside it is painted in the old mta colors i remember when they where testing these lrv's back when the muni street car was here in the late 70's
They most certainly are. They suck. But it's just like CRail87 said they were mechanical nightmares. The finest thing about those cars those weren't the original doors to those cars.
Incredibly moving. I have vague memories of when I was younger, riding on these. I never appreciated it, I had thought of these as common, and wanted to ride on the newer trolleys, not these ones. Now, I wish I could take just one more ride, knowing fully what was going to happen to them.
This was very hard to watch, it reminded me that all things change, soon enough the newer Kinki-Sharyo trains will be scrapped as well. Better start riding!
Seashore is getting 3424, which at the time of my posting, is at riverside. The move is expected to take place towards the beginning of the summer. That will be the only one we get.
All of the bodies were in pretty good shape, although body rot had begun and it takes a lot of time and work to completely rid the cars of that. The real problem was that with their age they were mechanical nightmares.
@CRail87 probably agree because the monorail in disneyland has a mechanic nightmare, even with the mark7 because they just keep remodeling them out of the rollingstock frame, and these frams been around since 1970s.
@CRail87 They were mechanical nightmares back when they were delivered. 50-60% of the fleet was constantly out of service. MBTA had to return PCC's into service and do an insane PCC overhaul program.
The Type 8 cars were purchased to replace the aged SLRV's, which would have otherwise been scrapped close to 10 years ago, and the extra age is owed to the type 8's being such a miserable failure. The blinking lights had nothing to do with the decision, as such a mechanism to accomplish this would be fairly simply to design and install.
The remains will not be dumped into a landfill, the scrap metal will be melted down and recycled. The company doing the demolition is actually a scrap dealer who will then sell the raw materials after they are melted down.
I took color movies of them being built at Ridley Township, Penna. I operated one of the Boston cars on the test track and have photos of it. The car had trolley poles on it and someone snapped a photo of me standing in front of the car holding the trolley rope. Why didn't somebody remove the rollsigns before they were scrapped. What a missed opportunity. Collectors would have paid "cash money" for them.
The batch of 14 cars being scrapped when this video was taken were sold as is, and they could not be touched before being scrapped. Believe me, we tried.
I remember when these were the "NEW" LRVs, the old sliding doors (closed with the KERKLUNK sound) on before they were retrofitted, and the somewhat high pitch electronic sound the trolleys made in the cabin as they accelerated.
Those original doors were known as "plug" doors. They weren't actually sliding doors. It was just one of the very poor designs on the cars. It would have been sad to see them go if it were not for the fact that they were troublesome junk and the fact that they were replaced by new cars, not buses.
Unfortunately yes. The MBTA receives government funding for their vehicles, so they are not allowed to make any profit by selling them off. They must either be scrapped or saved for historical purposes, but cannot be used for profit by any other entity.
And from what I've been told, the new cars absolutely stink. What burns me as a taxpayer is why SHOULDN'T the T be allowed to make some money off the things, it might help balance the budget and make mass transit a little more viable. At least Seashore is getting one or two from what's being said here, which is good.
To the other poster....the old Bluebirds on the Red Line will probably NEVER go away. They're too well-built to justify it. What vintage are the Blue Line cars being replaced?
This was done at riverside in March of 07. 14 were scrapped in that batch, 15 remain, 13 of which will be scrapped in the near future (not including the 3 work cars). All of the video clips are of 3461.
For me, they are the image of the T growing up in Newton. I moved from the area in 1988. Thanks for this. Sad they were such lemons - they look great.
Well, we scrapped all OUR Boeings six years ago. We still have two of them (Yes, I'm from San Francisco, and our cars were also replaced with Bredas, which are bad! They are really loud! Oh, and yes, they did, 3424. Check out Wikipedia.
It's a shame. Even though these were considered lemons, they ran better than the Breda Type 8's that are on the rails today. Does anyone know if the T donated one or two of these to the Seashore Trolley Museum in Maine?
Yeah, they did, and I know this even though I live in San Francisco! I believe it was 3424 or something; that's the only one. And the only other MBTA car they kept is I believe Muni 1320 or something.
Great video. What song

Were these cars scrapped on the MBTA property? (I am curious because one of the cars shredded in the video, I had shot in 2005.)

This was done at riverside in March of 07. 14 were scrapped in that batch, 15 remain, 13 of which will be scrapped in the near future (not including the 3 work cars). All of the video clips are of 3461.

Thanks. I had thought that 3523 was one of those shredded then, which I had shot on the C in 2005.
