Lincoln was anti-slavery but, pro-Union which leads to that dichotomous statement about preserving the Union and freeing or not freeing the slaves. However, make no mistake, Lincoln was clearly anti-slavery as he put it quite succinctly; 'Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.'

You forgot one thing. Democrats listen to everything you just said, then say, "Yeah, but the Republican party of today is the Democratic party of yesterday." They claim that the southern democrats all switched to the Republican party and hijacked it after the CRA was passed in the mid-60s. So in other words, they agree with everything you just said, except that they then say that the D and R switched places in the 60s.

In all honesty, right or wrong, I'm against abortions in mostly every circumstance. I'm against gay marriage, and against that DADT repeal. I'm for water boarding terrorists. Fairly conservative (R) right?

On the other hand, the GOP are racist towards minority groups and look down on the lower/middle class folks. Which is way I can't roll with them. IMO, blacks and others who are not too well off in the U.S, that are Reps. are brainwashed. Dems are more for the less fortunate these days.

When Obama was elected, I actually heard an African America telling someone that they weren't going to have to pay their mortgage anymore because Obama was president. Talk about being brainwashed.
