I personally love her voice. She sounds a little like Regina Spektor, so unique and strong. And due to the fact that I hear german accents every single day I don't think it's missing here, if I didn't read the comments, I wouldn't even know about it ;)
you know i thought "santa" was an audience member at first.... i think i prefered thinking of it that way ... coz then it makes her look WAY more insane... but then i dunno if you can do all that stuff to an audience member :P
What I would like to know, speaking critically, is how they arranged the music. I understand creative liberty and all that, but I was looking at the music (I've got the book) and it seemed that she was only using her chest voice the whole time. :?
the original production did not have "santa" on stage at all... let alone in a wheelchair. obviously you're not an actress enough to pull off the song without using a prop. JRB would vomit over this production

obviously the actress is not strong enough to put over the song without a prop.... also do u know what the parody of this song is??? this "CONCEPT" and the whole show sucks...give it up better yet send it to mr brown and see what he says
The parody is of a Bette Midler song, I believe. And, anyway, whether the actress is strong enough to act without a prop is hardly conceivable by watching this performance alone. Also, it's not necessarily her fault that the Santa is on stage; it was obviously an idea by the director, ingeniously done so. JRB is not one to vomit on a production as well-done as this. Although, he might like to vomit on you...
you are correct. she did it wrong and didn't do any accents. they even omitted the line where she says "I"M not even German!" which is my favorite funniest line, so that ruined it for me.
I'm not sure how you could assert that a performer or a director has done something WRONG. Every piece of music ever written is up to individual interpretation. Yes, there is a "correct" way to perform a Mozart concerto and there areways to shit all over it but modern music, especially theater, is up to the actors and the direction. Do you think the modern vision of the last production of Sweeney Todd (w/ LuPone and her tuba) in NYC was "wrong?" It was definitely different..but was it incorrect?
She obviously has a beautiful voice but it's true what yarr says, she was exhausting her voice the whole time and it's also true that most of the laughs came from Santa Claus but I still love the piece and they did an extremely good job considering this is a highschool. I wish mine was thise good.
very good. extremely good actually, but i think the acting was a little bit lacking on her part. most of the laughs from the audience came when the guy did something. But still extremely good singing and not BAD acting by any means. Just thought I'd put that out there. :-)
um.. yeah there is, it's kinda the one of he major points of the song. One of the lines says, "I mean come on, i'm not even german!" so if there is no accent then that loses it's effectiveness. anyway, even without the accent, Awesome job!
I'll pass along the compliment to her! Kristine Zbornik, not JRB, wrote the whole monologue. And the German line isn't even in the script; it was just an adlib by the performer. The song wasn't written that way in the first place. So, yeah, it can make it funny, but it's definitely not one of the main points of the song- it's never alluded to again. But hey, that's the great thing about the show- while it requires a strong respect of the original material, it's very open to interpretation.
The style of the song should require a German accent. If it didn't fit they wouldn't have used it in the first place. It's not used throughout the song - and the effot required to put in is outweighed by the what you get out of it. Nevertheless, it was very well directed and performed. I liked the santa-hat beating very much, and the whole idea of him being tied up.

I feel like the use of a Nick is kind of distracting. She could've done it fine by herself...she's a good enough actress.

Hmm... There's always the possibility that THIS IS NOT THE BLOODY ORIGINAL PRODUCTION! The idea of adding the Santa is genius.

glitternbgay, if you're such an authority on musical theatre, why don't you post a few videos of YOU singing this "properly?"
Woohoo. Go Wickedude. ^_^ +1 for you.

Actually, I'm guessing it's a parody of Marlene Dietrich...hence, the fact that it's usually done with a German accent.

She totally exhausted her voice through that song, pushing it too hard in the beginning, you can hear it at the end.
I also had this problem when I sing this song, well I still do sort of.
you can still give power without straining yourself, she'll ruin her voice if she continues like that.
Which is a sham because she's clearly very good :)

what's with the lack of an accent?

um..theres not really much of a point to having one.
