I think this version is more flexible and felt with more spirituality and freedom than Horowitz' version. I also adore Horowitz' version, don't get me wrong! But this performance adds another dimension to the piece, both in sound and in concept. Absolutely stunning!
Of course, the Horowitz version is sublime...but it somehow seems tinged with an ineffable sadness, an aching nostalgia. Here, the composer, himself a phenomenally gifted pianist, makes the piece take wing...it is exquisitely played here. Simply magnificent.
That's funny because I find the Horowitz version totally joyful, effervescent and playful with a hint of mischief! It just goes to show that we each hear something different when we listen to music - it's completely personal :0)
i've always found a work performed by its composer to have a rare quality. maybe it's just the idea. the piece is amazing, the recording is amazing too. thanks!
This piece was made famous by Horowitz when offered it as a selection in a promotional disc issued by Goodyear (as I remember) sometime in the 1950s or 60s. I was subsequently reissued in the later larger CD collections by ?Columbia.
Are there words possible to describe this marvel, the tenderest of themes metamorphosed like lightning thru myriad moods, all in perfect classical proportion.... And the playing...some of the most individual sounds to come from a piano. Many thanx.

The Horowitz version is so beautiful and captivating I actually even prefer it to Medtners own playing! I really wish he'd recorded more Medtner :0(
