I really can't understand why this game is so popular. All you're doing is hitting buttons in a random order as projected by a screen. I'd bet pretty confidently that one could learn to actually play the guitar in the same time it takes one to become proficient at Guitar Hero. I'm in my 12th year playing the piano, so yes, before you start going nuts, I do know what it's like to learn an instrument.
