Fantastic performance and duo. Mick was my private instructor at Berklee and I have nothing but words of praise for him. Incredible musician, educator and human being!
Teacher and student together. I'm always struck how Mick Goodrick so influenced and is the creative genius behind John Scofield and Pat Metheny and yet they are the better known guitarists. No one matches the phrasing, ease, and skill of the great Mick Goodrick. Wish he were seen more and there were more opportunities to go hear him perform.
I think Pat uses a Jazz chorus for small gigs. Tone is a funny thing though, although I really love his playing and have all of the older albums I hardly ever listen to Pat because I can't stand that insipid delayed sound. At times it almost as though he's hiding behind it & he dosnt need to. But Bireli Lagrene playing his L5, I could listen to all day long. Just my preferance.
Hiding behind it? Geeze. I remember an interview in Downbeat magazine - many years ago; actually it was the 'blindfold test' with Bruce Foreman. They played something of Pat's and Bruce said that while he respected Pat's playing, he really didn't care for the delay. I always thought that criticism was lame. Where is Bruce now? Pat's place in Jazz history is firmly established. Bruce will be nothing more than a footnote (having never used a chorus or delay).
"Pat's place in Jazz history is firmly established"
Most of his music is not Jazz it's some sort of fusion.
Question and Answer is a very good album and some other Jazzy albums such as Bright Size Life or songs he does such as "All the Things You Are"
It 's correct in a sense that his place in Jazz is firmly established but you have to admit a lot of his visibility compared to someone like Mick Goodrick comes from his crossover albums
Rex-I don't think he's hiding behind it, I think he's USING it. Respect your opinion tho...there are a few players that do stuff that just bugs me, but I still like or respect what they do.
Please, does any one know what Metheny uses to get this tone I love so much? I mean, there's obviously a delay here, but beside that, is there a preamp, something, and what amp, a Roland? Can't see... What a bout his guitar? An Ibanez, not the Metheny signature they sell though. Is it a solid spruce top you think? Or a laminated mapple like a 175?
If anyone knows... Thanks!
PS : Yes, Mick, not Mike, thank you for him. Mick, if you read this, hi, I loved studying with you! ;-)
Almanac for Guitar Voice leading.. I was very lucky to meet Mick Goodrick. I was in Boston while I was attending Berklee's 5 week program, and a friend told me about this book. I wanted to make sure I was looking correctly at how it worked, so I went to his office and he was happy to help me see how his system works. One of the most phenomenal teachers out there.
I find very interesting to see that the approach for comping and soloing of Pat, Mick, john Abercrombie or Scofield... are the same (the berklee effect?).
It is in fact very much what Goodrick talks about in his fabulous "advancing guitarist" dedicated to Pat with the following comment: "I dedicate this book to pat partially because he made it possible but mostly because he never needed it". This tells a lot about the respect existing between both players. Thank you for this great post!
This is great. Interesting when Pat gets back together with people from his very early days. I'm surprised there isn't more on here from the Montreal Pat-athon. He had this monster residency there didn't he?

Mike Goodrick is a storyteller on guitar. Listen to his work on Gary Burton - open your eyes you can fly. Amazing.
