@caponegre I guess, you understand his music if you feel something for it, similar with blues music, if you feel it it's wonderful, if you don't, you dont get it. Clearly your one of the many unfortunate people, who can't appreciate Tom Waits's unique yet unbeleivabley powerful music/lyrics/voice
@caponegre Don't need to talk to me like I'm a 4 year old, and why would you comment something saying you dislike his music, clearly on a page with his music and with people who like his music. To be fair, your asking for an arguement. And of course your unfortunate if you can't bring yourself to like his music. I feel unfortunate as i can't stand most classical music, when i know it is an apriciated music and is well played and constructed.

started listening to tom waits back in 92 or so, when i started high school. everyone I knew my age didnt know who he was,,they probably still dont...poor saps
Why can't modern musicians make music without worrying about how much money they're going to make? What happened to injecting actual feelings into songs? Where's the soul? I can tell you one thing; there is no soul in a song that calls women bitches and says that they want to peel my skin.
rain dogs was the first waits record i heard and still my favorite...hearing it was like changing my musical world from black and white to color...or maybe the other way around
There is no one like Tom, he truly is a genius! I have loved him since Small Change and I will always love him. I have travel very far to see him live, and man is it worth it!!
Damn, I can't believe I never got around to buying Rain Dogs. I've listened to it a couple times and this song reminds me how good it is. Now that I think about it that and Bone Machine are probably my favorite Waits albums. Better get on amazon...
this is what i got in order: Rain Dogs (didn't really know him, just heard a song off of pandora and loved the sound of his voice and the music store had this album most in stock) Then it goes Bone Machine, Swordfishtrombones, Frank's Wild Years. Soooon I'll get more, perhaps a couple from his earlier days and a couple from his latter days
Hi guys, I'm kinda late to the party but Tom Waits is fast becoming my all time favourite. So far I've got Rain Dogs, Orphans, Black Rider and Alice, if I'm missing any particularly great albums, please let me know.
@poolehart - I did exactly that a while ago. Amazon has them all, and didnt cost much. Absolute bargain and some money will find its way to a real artist.
I was no more than a child when listening this brief, precise, accurate and everlasting masterpiece. Just a Waits in his splendor could produce such a glorious pleasure to our ears
Hey alexohncoe. I'm not sure I follow your logic about pretentiousness and being a genius. They are unrelated, right? Waits is indeed not in your face, doesnt advertise, and certainly doesnt take credit when its not due (quite the opposite) and as a fellow rabid Waits fan I'm sure you agree that genius is an unsung thing. but people who really care about music (as you and I do) and in my short 39 years, I've never come across an artist as inspirational as Waits. Rock on people.
Before I reluctantly disagree, let my be clear: I too am a rabid Tom Waits fan, and there's probably no one still making music whom I respect more.
Tom Waits is surely a great songwriter, but it seems a little silly to call him a genius; he seems to cultivate an image which is totally unpretentious, even the opposite of "genius". I think Tom just wants to be seen as a guy you know, not a brillaint figurine.
I agree with you in some points, maybe my statement was a little excessive (I can't help myself when Tom is in question). But, I still thinks that he's a MUSICAL genius. And yes, he is unpretentious, but that is just what means to be a genius: to be simple and unpretentious (like every true genius before him), instead of nurturing some empty, hollow 'genius figure' based solely on starry existance.
This is probably in my top five Tom Waits songs, and I own (legitimately) everything he's ever done. Marc Ribot's guitar playing in this is absolutely beautiful as well.
By the way... Waits is not gay, he is married and has three kids... I find really anoying when someone judge a person without even knowing of what are they talking about...
and what's being gay have to do with whether it's good music or not? It's Still Great music, but either way, he's not gay. Check your sources, man, geez.

All the same, he's brilliant.

Tom Waits is a lyrical genius -
someone who can create soundscrapes;
not only in his music, but also in his lyrics.
He didn't have to be 'officially' in the "Hall of Fame."
His loyal fans put him there many years ago
and passed him on to each new generation.
It is to them I say ~
Heart-thanks for the priceless gift of Tom Waits!

Hush a wild violet, hush a band of gold
Hush you're in a story I heard somebody told
Tear the promise from my heart, tear my heart today
You have found another, oh baby I must go away
So hang down your head for sorrow, hang down your head for me
Hang down your head tomorrow, hang down your head Marie
Hush my love the rain now, hush my love was so true
Hush my love a train now well it takes me away from you
So hang down your head for sorrow, hang down your head for me
Hang down your head....
