  • God, I love this man's music, but I swear I can only listen to it when I am at least mildly depressed; otherwise, my day goes down, and fast..

    All the same, he's brilliant.

  • pls call my ex...and say her i am crying, listening this song...because of the huge anomality of cola whiskey in my body...

  • 0:45 looks like Kramer

  • I've been absent-mindedly singing Tom Waits songs and now my throat hurts.

  • I don't drink, so when I want to cry I listen to Tom's sad songs

    very helpful

  • i hang down my head everyday and then lift it again because of tom waits

  • i love tom waits but i dont like his music

i mean i like his attitude, his concept of music and everything

but the results, i dont know..i just wouldnt listen to it more then once

  • @caponegre I guess, you understand his music if you feel something for it, similar with blues music, if you feel it it's wonderful, if you don't, you dont get it. Clearly your one of the many unfortunate people, who can't appreciate Tom Waits's unique yet unbeleivabley powerful music/lyrics/voice

  • @hahaurmno I guess i understand it if i said so

the thing is, it just doesnt stick with me

and i am not unfortunate, thank you very much, i just dont like music you do, thats all - no need to say stupid things

  • @caponegre Don't need to talk to me like I'm a 4 year old, and why would you comment something saying you dislike his music, clearly on a page with his music and with people who like his music. To be fair, your asking for an arguement. And of course your unfortunate if you can't bring yourself to like his music. I feel unfortunate as i can't stand most classical music, when i know it is an apriciated music and is well played and constructed.

  • @caponegre

nah he hits and misses in my opinion. This one is a hit/miss.

I recommend you listen to: Rockin' chair, Franks song and Raindogs

  • !!; ) I do feel this...

    thanks to sharer and uploader...

    parfait chanson xxxx

  • can anybody gimme the name of one of his songs where he uses the higher keys cos i know this guy has serious voice range tom waits = legend

  • @wornspur temptation off of franks wild years

  • I like Tom Waits.

  • Tom is a timeless genius!

  • Strangely it's about being alive. Tom gets into your spine and entrails of the brain. We need him so much now.

  • I spent more than half my life getting drunk on his music. It is just that good. Listening since the "Heart of Saturday Night"

  • sometimes i feel like i spend half my life drunk listening to tom..

  • always makes me sad - simple but so good

  • вот нищщщяк ё!!! обожаю чувака!

  • Comment removed

  • Drinking whiskey, listening to Waits, bemoaning another relationship mess up, and commenting on this half because you read 1984 too young and think 101 is a bad number.

  • come look at my cover of this song!! of course, no one can match his genius or even come close.

  • @87KillerJoe it does not really mean shut up, it is much nicer way of saying it. Saying hush, be quite: but in a nice way

  • Sorry I'm not english. What does it mean "Hush a wild violet?". Hush is like shut up??

  • gotta love drunkenly singing along to this at stupid o'clock

  • started listening to tom waits back in 92 or so, when i started high school. everyone I knew my age didnt know who he was,,they probably still dont...poor saps

  • Tom Waits is a lyrical genius -

    someone who can create soundscrapes;

not only in his music, but also in his lyrics.

He didn't have to be 'officially' in the "Hall of Fame."

His loyal fans put him there many years ago

and passed him on to each new generation.

It is to them I say ~

Heart-thanks for the priceless gift of Tom Waits!

    .

  • most perfect little 8-bar guitar solo I can think of. nice work, marc ribot.

  • Hush a wild violet, hush a band of gold

Hush you're in a story I heard somebody told

Tear the promise from my heart, tear my heart today

You have found another, oh baby I must go away

So hang down your head for sorrow, hang down your head for me

Hang down your head tomorrow, hang down your head Marie

Hush my love the rain now, hush my love was so true

Hush my love a train now well it takes me away from you

So hang down your head for sorrow, hang down your head for me

    Hang down your head....

  • marc ribots guitar makes it!

  • Tom Waits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

  • @211bill should have been inducted years ago. But nice to see him get some recognition at last

  • oh man, how beautiful is that song ...

  • You either get him or you don't. I'm an addict. Funny bit this. Never yaked at a dumn Tom fan. Always something to say.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • I love this !! Tom Waits @ his best .... one of my favorites!!!

  • THIS IS GOD SINGING AND COMPOSING LYRICS ...remember god is un -manifested and tat twam asi!!!

  • rain dogs was the first waits record i heard and still my favorite...hearing it was like changing my musical world from black and white to color...or maybe the other way around

  • There is no one like Tom, he truly is a genius! I have loved him since Small Change and I will always love him. I have travel very far to see him live, and man is it worth it!!

  • Thanks very much for posting, very very much so ...

  • one of my favorite songs :)

  • tom waits is god !!!

  • Wer mag Tom Waits nicht?

    Pfff...

  • Damn, I can't believe I never got around to buying Rain Dogs. I've listened to it a couple times and this song reminds me how good it is. Now that I think about it that and Bone Machine are probably my favorite Waits albums. Better get on amazon...

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!

  • The entire Rain Dogs album is classic

  • Beautiful. I can listen to this over and over.

  • Spin tingling, moving to the max. Outstanding performance.

  • Another Timeless, Steely Beauty....Thanks! I love the pictures you put to song...NICE!

  • Though much of Toms works are very strange, I do say he deserves a rank somewhere near Dylan.

  • @sublimeruca27 its not like dylan didn't write some fairly insane shit though

  • So simple, yet so ingenious. Tom Waits, one of the best american songwriters ever.

  • with Keith in guitars!!!

  • this is what i got in order: Rain Dogs (didn't really know him, just heard a song off of pandora and loved the sound of his voice and the music store had this album most in stock) Then it goes Bone Machine, Swordfishtrombones, Frank's Wild Years. Soooon I'll get more, perhaps a couple from his earlier days and a couple from his latter days

  • poolehart-- > Mule Variations was probably the most commercially accepted one, it contains some real gems

  • Hi guys, I'm kinda late to the party but Tom Waits is fast becoming my all time favourite. So far I've got Rain Dogs, Orphans, Black Rider and Alice, if I'm missing any particularly great albums, please let me know.

  • "Rain Dogs" goes nicely together with "Frank's Wild Years" and "Bone Machine". They're an amazing trilogy.

  • Thanks, Raskoilnik. They're in my Amazon cart.

  • I would also add Swordfishtrombones , which is imo his best record.

  • @Raskoilnik Actually the three that people have traditionally said go together are Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years and Swordfishtrombones.

  • @rsgibson7 Yeah, I know - but I'm not "traditional". And anyway, I was suggesting a jumping-off point for someone new to Waits.

  • franks wild years

    bone machine

    swordfishtrombones

    heartatack and vine

    big time

  • Thanks, Speedfeuer. I'm starting to think I should just get ALL his albums.

  • @poolehart - I did exactly that a while ago. Amazon has them all, and didnt cost much. Absolute bargain and some money will find its way to a real artist.

  • @Speedfeuer Blue Valentine ?

  • I was no more than a child when listening this brief, precise, accurate and everlasting masterpiece. Just a Waits in his splendor could produce such a glorious pleasure to our ears

  • the most amazing album ever released -- this song still makes me tear up a little.

  • The quintisential album from a unique genius

  • Hey alexohncoe. I'm not sure I follow your logic about pretentiousness and being a genius. They are unrelated, right? Waits is indeed not in your face, doesnt advertise, and certainly doesnt take credit when its not due (quite the opposite) and as a fellow rabid Waits fan I'm sure you agree that genius is an unsung thing. but people who really care about music (as you and I do) and in my short 39 years, I've never come across an artist as inspirational as Waits. Rock on people.

  • is there seriously anything more badass than that small change cover? haha This is one great song if i do say so myself

  • Rain Dogs

  • Tom Waits is somwhere beyond every other common mortal, musician or not... Where that place is, maybe only he knows. The rest of us can only dream...

    The man is a GENIUS!

  • Before I reluctantly disagree, let my be clear: I too am a rabid Tom Waits fan, and there's probably no one still making music whom I respect more.

Tom Waits is surely a great songwriter, but it seems a little silly to call him a genius; he seems to cultivate an image which is totally unpretentious, even the opposite of "genius". I think Tom just wants to be seen as a guy you know, not a brillaint figurine.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Best song on Dogs!!!

  • I agree with you in some points, maybe my statement was a little excessive (I can't help myself when Tom is in question). But, I still thinks that he's a MUSICAL genius. And yes, he is unpretentious, but that is just what means to be a genius: to be simple and unpretentious (like every true genius before him), instead of nurturing some empty, hollow 'genius figure' based solely on starry existance.

    Anyhow, that's my belief.

  • I got you now.

  • I agree 100 % but I still think his carreer is almost flawless even if its extremely diversified, some people call that genius.

  • This is probably in my top five Tom Waits songs, and I own (legitimately) everything he's ever done. Marc Ribot's guitar playing in this is absolutely beautiful as well.

  • I grew up listening to him, and I'll always love this song, and any song of his. He's brilliant.

  • Loved the pictures. Love the song, as always.

  • does anyone actually care about commenting on the song? because I think it is simply amazing. love it. love it. love it. he is a musical genius...

  • Yes. It's a masterpiece. I think this might be the best I've ever heard Waits, in terms of pure vocals.

  • most pure, unique and powerful vocals ive heard

  • @eternallyj The most of them out there is just speecheless I think. This song is really awesome.

  • @eternallyj most of us are not worthy of a comment of Mr Waits. I for one will just enjoy a master! 1OleFu

  • @eternallyj I don't care about your comment. Is that good enough?

  • drfaith = another religious zealot trying to force his beliefs on the world... move out of the dark ages you bigot

  • I enjoyed watching the great images on your video while listening to Tom Waits sing.

He's one of a kind, perfect man in my eyes: masculine , married to same woman for decades, clean and sober.

  • VERY sober.

  • And if he is..? What is wrong with it, I mean a person sexual preferences has nothing to do with his creativity nor his or her music

  • By the way... Waits is not gay, he is married and has three kids... I find really anoying when someone judge a person without even knowing of what are they talking about...

  • i'd like to be as "crazy" as tom, crazy like a fox.

  • haha he's definitely not gay :]

  • you heard wrong: HE'S MARRIED!

and what's being gay have to do with whether it's good music or not? It's Still Great music, but either way, he's not gay. Check your sources, man, geez.

  • If you dunno what your talkin about you should just shut ur bloody mouth.

  • Does it matter???

  • haha, "but i heard he was gay". funny. you do not say that these days. you do NOT say that.

  • hes like dylan , guinness and feta cheese. an acquired taste!! i love them all! those who dont-- no problem . listen to the fukin spice girls- drink bacardi breezers and eat ronald mc donalds fuckin g string!! i know where id rather be. more power to yer elbow tom!!!!

  • you must be so proud to eat that fucking cheese...

  • Let's just hope it's healthy, and he may live twice as long as the other guys

  • how the hack can you say the word cheese and the name Guinness in one sentence?? .. :S

but i hear what you're saying though.. you've got to like it.. if not.. you'd probably think it sucks

  • My fav song by the legend

  • I repeat: it's real great!!!

  • magnifico!

  • its totally amazing

  • I love past' Tom!

    But the modern too :)
