  • I have to agree with Debbie on her opening statements about giving it your all. Generally, people have lowly attitudes about retail work. People assume that it's a "get by" job or that's it's a job for youth until they get a job that pays only commission. Then, they quickly realize that a sales position actually requires skill, interest, intense motivation, and strategy. You can actually earn quite a bit of money in retail, if you have the right attitude and a true interest in the company.

  • @TheCouturiere I have been working in retail for the past month and I feel like your statement is true. A lot of my co-workers are don't seem enthusiastic and don't work very hard. They don't seem interested in the company at all. I feel a bit uncomfortable about how enthusiastic I am. I feel like I want to be at work while the others just want to go home. I feel like I would get along better if I just dropped my enthusiasm, but I'm there for the customers.

  • @CactrotRapido It's tuff working around people lacking an interest and passion for their job. Talk with your manager about the team's morale and how it might be affecting your performance. Ask for the discussion to remain confidential and see if he or she might have practical advice that you can start using right away. When I'm faced with social challenges, I just remember that I can't control the behavior of others; the only thing that I can control is how I choose to respond to it.

  • @TheCouturiere I no longer work in the retail industry, although the place where I worked was high end. I made lots of money, considering it was retail. But eventually, I too became dissatisfied with the extremely competitive work environment. It seemed like everyday someone was arguing over a sale that they felt they deserved. No one trusted each other and everyone was disgusted with working there. You have to really love your job to work as a commissioned salesperson.

  • Establish your business by distingushing yourself from your competiting sales associates. Let your customers know what you have to offer and how you can help them using your unique talents and skills. If there are any special services that your company provides, then tell your customers about them and use these services to your advantage to help your customers.

  • I've worked in retail for nearly 2 years, and I've found that in order to be successful in retail sales, and any position in sales for that matter, you have to be interested in people. You have to truly enjoy helping people and being among people. If you're a recluse at heart and you prefer solitude to accomplish tasks, then sales may not be for you. The most successful people in sales are those who look for opportunities to meet people and establish genuine and long-term relationships.

  • New video soon, Debbie?! :)

  • I find your family and their values to be right on, inspirational for motivated self starters thanks for the tips!

  • I have my own business on Etsy and I think you nailed everything. This conversation is great for new sellers to listen to and be motivated by. You guys are great and an inspiration. I shared your video and hope that other people feel the same way!

  • i hate it when people in hollister say "whats up?"

what the hell am i supposed to say back?

  • @Callie2039 Hello?

    duuh.

  • I'm going to start working in retail and it's commission based. I"m so afraid. Any tips?

  • @Vanessag502 Strive to establish long-term relationships with customers. Most novice salespersons focus all of their time and energy on helping walk-up customers (customers who just hand them clothes to ring up). You may earn instant commission ringing up clothes for walk-up customers, but in the long run, these customers will not sustain your business. You want the majority of your sales to come from your personal customers - the customers who come in and ask specifically for you.

  • Hi Debbie, I just wanted to comment on what you said about employees complaining to their friends instead of their employers. It seems like you are a very understanding employer, I mean you bailed a guy out of jail and helped him as much as you could, how much more understanding and helpful can an employer get? But not all employers are like you. There are places where it's a communist/dictatorship kind of environment, they may seem like they want employees' feedbacks but when the feedback are

  • @i2ofmei cont'.

given, the employers brush them off and sometimes find a reason to terminate the employee (considering what the feedback is about). The restaurant I work in, if they change something (and they change things everyday), and it affects us negatively and them positively, we have no say whatsoever. If we do say something we're on their shitlist. I know ur thinking, why don't u quit? None of us can in this economy. I do wish all employers were like you. But not everyone is as kind.

  • i would love to work for debbie

  • Wow , really interesting and helpful Debbie!

  • your mam reminds me of daria, she is really intelligent and as to put up with stupidity from the public, she looks like her too

  • I worked in retail years ago, and my bosses werent too friendly.. it would be a dream to work for Debbie!!

  • I just love your talks with Lorraine and advice :) Do you have any thoughts for working moms? I find that at work I am less motivated to "give it my all" because my 3 1/2 year old is constantly on my brain. Sometimes I feel like I'm not being the best employee or the best mom because I'm divided!

  • Great advice as always, Debbie! ;)

  • You give the BEST advice, thanks so much. I feel like this applies to most jobs and careers, great points.

Love u and that you have a channel now. :D

  • i found this soo helpful..i work and retail and am currently in school for fashion design. especially the part about women being catty in these kinds of situations. i recently found out that a "friend" went behind my back at work to keep me from becoming a manager even though i was best qualified. i went to my boss and spoke to her about buying and now im helping out with that. so speaking up to your boss and looking out for your own position in the workplace is good advice. thanks debbie!

  • love this channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!another happy addition to my day.thank you.much love,lisa

  • Excellent advice Debbie, I am enjoying your videos!

  • Your stores are the ONES that I would enjoy shopping at :)

  • I'm in the restaurant business and this was very helpful and insightful! Thank you!!!

  • I love Debbies new channel!!! Lorraien you should give debbie her own video camera. It would be so fun to see what Debbies life consists of :D

  • I love debbie!!!!!

  • great advice debbie!

  • BRAVO DEBBIE......UNA MUJER MUY INTELIGENTE Y ORIGINAL. AMAZING WOMAN

  • shes amazinggggg

  • i love her attitude and outlook on the customerbase.

  • APPLAUSE!!! Love it

  • thank u debby for opening a whole new perspective for me. really interssting. u handle it so great when lorain is making the questions not it too easy for u -my highest respekt!

  • i love these videos!

  • @chios121 This because you were employee, if you own the business is different.

  • I work in customer service and some people no matter how nice I am are still supper rude. Some people have no manners.

  • I think you and your mom are great. I love listening to yall

  • Debbie,

Hi! I LOVE your channel! I"m looking forward to getting to know you better through your daily videos. I have two questions for you. If you didn't own the retails stores and worked for someone else was would be your job choice? On one of Lorraine's videos you mentioned you color you own hair. What is the brand and color? Thanks in advance for answering my questions! : )

  • I hate when no one greets me when I come into a store.

  • I LOVE the quality of the video!

  • Yeah! pleeeaaase talk more about confidence!! like things you have to pay attention to:)

  • If a customer is rude to you, it is because they are insecure or jealous.

  • You are lucky to have such a smart and supportive mother!

  • Debbie, you are amazing. 'nuff said :)

  • Debbie, what do you do with customers who always seem to want a discount? Or try to get a little % off here and there?

  • rli helpful and good advice

  • Hey Debbie. Do you have any suggestions for clothing and jewelry that aren't extremely expensive but look really high end? I'm a college student and I need some ideas for cheap alternatives. Thanks. ;D

  • @andalittlecreamsoda try etsy.com ..and search around everything is handmade usually..and very high quality..or go to kohls or target and buy the designer lines they sell..like vera wang at kohls

  • Lovin' these videos Debbie (and Lorraine)...do you have any good "shoplifting" stories??

  • Do you have any marketing advice? I really appreciate any help you can offer!

    xoxo

    P. S. Geez, did I leave enough comments? LOL!

  • I love that you're nice to everyone, regardless of their appearance. Everyone is a potential customer. If they don't buy today, they might tomorrow. Even if they don't, it's wonderful to hear you treat them the same as you would everyone else!

I wish I could hop on a plane, fly down, and shop at your stores. You guys know your stuff, are kind to your customers, and are clearly successful. I just started selling my own jewelry, and really respect what you do! :)

  • I am such a stickler for customer service. A retail employee should always at least acknowledge your presence when you walk in the door. My husband and I both look younger than we are (we're almost 30), and sometimes at jewelry stores, we get ignored. It's frustrating because 99% of the time, we're there because we want to buy!

  • Debbie you are so right. I worked a part time retail job for almost 2 years and the biggest thing I've learned is do whatever possible to make the customer happy. Sometimes the customer wants you to literally walk around the store with them and pick out things for them. On the other hand, some people walk into the store and before I can greet them, they say "I don't want any help." You should do more videos like these :)

  • Priceless advice for people working in the retail industry! Thank you Debbie! I'm going to apply your advice to my career. =)

  • i also like when people say "hello" when i come in to store! :) that's nice!

  • I used to go to a cute little shop where the owner/salesperson would follow me around constantly- then I would be trying on clothes she would hang clothes over the door for me to try on-not just 1 or 2 outfits but like 10- when I would put the clothes back she would ask me why I didn't like what she picked-I quit shopping there which sucked because she did have nice things but everytime I went I got a knot in my stomach b/c it felt like I was being harrassed

  • I really liked this video! I work part-time in sales and it's hard to stay enthusiastic when you get rude customers talking down to you and shouting, but I suppose it says more about them than you. It helps to know that even you two have to deal with retail problems as well.

Debbie (and Lorraine!!) fan from Scotland, UK xx

  • debbie is awesome

  • I want to work there!! You know a British sales assistant would be a fabulous asset :) Great retail advice, you have to choose your attitude when you get to work, if you didn't have customers...you wouldn't have a job!

  • i love debbie! she seems like such a great mom

  • <3 debbie

  • I want Debbie to be my mom! She gets it!!!!!

  • tips on asking for a raise?

  • Debbie, you're amazing and so inspirational.

  • Debbie, you just blew my mind.

I work in furniture retail and the days when I give 50% I complain about how I feel underappreciated. And the days when I give 110% I feel great. Sometimes helping someone who's only buying candles is a pain but other times it's so rewarding.

And having product confidence makes all the difference. We're not trained well on that at all and our bosses tell us to constantly ask if people need help. It's a horrible combination.

  • when i shop i just wanna be alone but in the same time to be some ppl to help ONLY when u ask i hate it when they ask if i want this or that

  • I totally agree. I am much more likely to buy from a store where I feel I've been treated nicely and just as good as someone who is going to spend a tonne of money there!

  • Hi Debbie! I have a question: What is your advice to a recent college graduate who can't seem to get a job and is getting really discouraged? By the way, I have been a long time fan of Lorraine's videos, and I absolutely adore this new channel (I keep thinking the name of this channel is "DearDebbie" because everyone is writing for advice, like Dear Abby style :), but "DailyDebbie" implies frequent videos, so that's awesome! You're very calm and that is so cool!

  • can we here debbies advice on being a mother. the changes and what not.

  • I totally agree with her i see the girls act like there busy all of a sudden and then will completely ignore the customers..it's like if your working for comission you should go out of your way to make more money.. idk i guess some people totally just pick the wrong careers.

Just find the right sales person and stick with them!!!

  • I think an awesome youtube name for Debbies channel should have been, "Daily Dish with Debbie"! Great vid by the way!

  • A lot of people working in retail, get bashed for asking if you need help - but it's their job. I worked 12 years in fashion, and got really sick of being looked down on. But I always thank a salesperson for asking, it's their job. On the other hand, there is nothing worse, then walking in a store, and feel that the staff is busier talking amongst themselves.

  • I hate it when I enter a store and 3 or 4 jump to help specially the ones who sell perfumes But I like it when I'm shopping for clothes if the seller could figure out my size specially if the measuring system is different than what I'm used to :)

  • Some people work just for money they don't care if the job is done or not and then they complain if the management gave them a warning or terminated their contract and they'll act as victims. I know some one who gets fired all the time and its always the unfair management who did it !

  • I love Debbie's videos! :o) Awesome advice.

  • Retail is not for everybody. And shopping is not for everybody. There are people who I wonder why they don't just shop online if they don't want to be bothered. However, I made the choice to work retail and I have to make the best of it so I can walk away everyday feeling happy and good about myself. I sell skincare and its very sensitive and defensive at times. Listening is key. Some people just want you to listen. :) It human nature.

  • Lorraine, Debbie, thank you for taking the time to help us, the youTube viewers, with all of our questions. :) You're right, my intentions are to make a difference and find what works and stick with it. The best thing I am taking from this talk is Debbie's calm and cool demeanor. Its very humble. :) thanks florida ladies <3

  • Debbie has such great words of advice and i love these videos <3 right now I'm having workplace problems so hearing this is really nice and helpful :)

  • Everything u said was so true I wanted to buy a shirt in this shop today but ended up walking out cause the shop assistant would not acknowledge me. I was the only person in the store... Kinda still want the top though lol

  • Debbie, I need some advice: I wanted to go back to school this fall to pursue a degree in Education, the problem is that my manager (I'm an assistant manager) is unwilling to be flexible with my schedule because she says that when I was hired my job application stated that I was able to work anytime ( mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.). I cannot afford to quit my job, as it pays my rent, bills, etc. What would you do??

  • Wow, Debbie, you are a very ethical and intelligent business woman. I'm on the west coast but I certainly wish your stores were here. You obviously run a great store, are a good person to work for and a smart buyer as well. People that question why something may cost so much doesn't yet understand that (from what I've seen) theae are value based items. They are of a superior quality and/or made from more reputable suppliers/manufacturers/disigners.

  • i love that you treat all customers the same! As a teenager with more money then the average teenager to spend on clothes, i find shop assistants are quite rude to me until i prove to them i can pay which has turned me off from soooo many shops and has now limited me to 3. I just adore that you respect that policy! I also had a shop assistant stop mid sentence and walk away from me to a middle aged customer once.

  • im so glad you started this channel :)

  • Debbie, I couldn't agree with you more regading working hard. Like you said, no matter what salary you make, high or low, a good work ethic will get you everywhere, Someone eventually will notice, whether it be your employer, a customer who perhaps runs a business of their own or someone else........Working hard will reap it's rewards. Great advice Debbie!!

  • you would be such a great person to work for in retail...is your store hiring?! hahaha

  • Luved the vid today I enjoy Debbie advice ;) Debbie discount is a good idea!!! Florida is a good vaca spot always better with a discount hehe...Take care

  • How do you deal with a shoplifter?

  • my qs to debbie is: how to pick the right guy?

    love u, deb & lorraine <3

  • I'm so happy I quit my crappy retail job.

  • Great advice with good logical reasoning. Really helpful, thanks Debbie!

  • I hate when I walk in a store and the sales people look at me don't say anything, then the second someone else comes in they're like "Hi blah blah blah"

    And I'm like........ cool

but on the other hand sometimes the nordstroms ladies won't just leave me alone and they pick out ugly things for me but I feel bad about it so I try it on anyways

The girls at my sephora are straight up bitches to younger people, then they look kind of surprised when I spend like 100 bucks.

  • I wish I could work for the store.

  • Debbie is the Tony Robbins of retail!

  • i definitely agree with everything you've said here regarding retail and sales behavior as a customer, especially the parts about not being pushy and being sensitive to spending limits.

  • this is 1 of the deepest debbie clips i think ever!

i used to work at a store where we had to be all over people. here, people will buy but they don't want help. some people do but most get offended when u ask to help & the family i worked for used to tell us to say "hi! how are u today? do u need help finding anything?" b4 they get 5 ft in the door. i was always like lorraine w/ppl there & they used to get on my case all the time. if i'm in a store for 15 mins or more, then ppl can ask. lol

  • Debbie is aweome! Good idea getting her her own channel

  • debby one time, when i use to work at the mall, this lady just started screaming at me when i was ringing her up, just being a witch and i just flipped out on her cause she would not stop. my boss did not get mad at me but how should i have handled that. i think people abuse "the customer is always right" motto....you know what i mean?

  • Debbie gives good advice :) I'm glad I'm not in retail anymore cause some customers think they were entitlted to sales and a discount just. I don't like sales people following me around stores you definitely can tell those people work on a commission structure and I don't shop at places that don't say hi to me.

  • People always tell me companies are looking for young people to work with them. I'm going to graduate 4rm college next year and I'll be 22 by then, but the other day I went to this place to check out some vacancies and they all wanted people 25+ (not that they're old but I'm barely 21), with 1 or 2+ years of experience.

Questions: Nobody wants to hire someone with no experience, but then how do I get the chance to have some If they don't want to hire me? & how do I deal with the age?

  • debbie needs a fb page!

  • Retail Assistants always ruin my shopping experience. I must look really shady or something. I've once had them follow me around their entire department store within one meter of me and I had to turn around and be like "...why are you following me?" and they just laughed in my face. Another occasion I was in the store at the moment it was their closing time, and I was walking out, and had to be yelled at by three retail assistants to move quicker and to not look at anything.

  • will you ever do a cameo appearance "ask peter"?

    i have artsy questions...

  • These videos are so good for me.

  • I don't mind help. But it's so annoying in pink or vs when they like stand over your shoulder when you're looking at bras and stuff or in hollister the other day the girl literally chased me and loudly tellin me about some contest. Like that's when it gets annoying.

Debbie- how do you deal with theft?

  • The air that you carry around ; ) Loved that ! and how true !!!

  • i work in a consulting firm, and my subordinate is a nightmare...he never keeps us managers posted, but when we ask he tells us all is good, then when he's out on vacation/sick, we find that he left so many holes and dropped the ball on things and i am the one who has to clean up his mess. it's becoming so ridiculous . his pay is more than he deserves yet he abuses the system...unbelievable...and i'm sick of it...and our top boss is a moron, who has affinity for male employees. all is boondoggle

  • @shugatastic I think every business, regardless of the type runs into employees like that!

  • @shugatastic I think (not that you're asking lol) that as a manager you need to document when things go wrong like that with the employee to show that there is an issue. When he tells you all is good ask for a run through and what's been done, ask questions and show that there is an expectation. If you don't then why should he care. :)

  • Debbie is the next Oprah! Love it.

  • I tell people I'm going to look at everything when I walk in, and if I need someone I look for them... I just dislike that a lot of chain stores have nobody there when you need them even if it's a simple question.

  • And some customers are really nasty. But it always does seem to be the ones that aren't going to buy anything. Some people just take everything out on other people. I love hearing this advice. Even though I've worked in different aspects of retail (buying, design, selling, management) for years now it's still good to hear.

  • I've been in retail all of my working life. I deal with crazy materialistic money hungry penny pinching snobs on a daily basis. They've learned to abuse the "customer is always right" mentality by arguing over prices to save a dollar. Even if they know they're wrong. Because they know we'll do whatever they say just to make them happy so they don't complain to corporate. I hate my job.

  • Yeah, Debbie!

  • how hard is it to maintain your own store?

  • i love hearing the advice. debbie is just genuine and down to earth and that's what makes people want to listen. not just listen, but take the advice to heart.

  • Sometimes a person may not be able to afford something from a store, such as yours, but they'll see the quality items and the nice staff and they'll recommend that store to some of their friends that may be looking for high quality items and have the money to afford it. How do you suggest getting ahead in business when you have a less than supportive boss? It usually bites you in the ass to go above them.

  • great advice

  • Question: How I become less shy and more open around people?

  • When I was manager at a boutique I always let my employees come to me and let them know their concerns and I always went by that. Now I work in a large department store and the management sees you as disposable and don't really seem to care about the employees concerns and it makes me sad. I know what you mean with the sizing and I try and use the"this runs small"trick.I also get women that DO NOT FIT into that size and buy it anyway. It's unflattering and you just cant convince them otherwise

  • Thanks for answering my question Debbie! Very good advice. I believe in treating people as I would like to be treated. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of bad salespeople in this world. Customers are becoming so used to poor service, that they have a bad attitude right from the start. I've had customers come back and ask for me personally because they felt I really cared about them and what they needed. That makes me feel GREAT!! But there will always be the rude ones....can't make that stop!

  • you rock

  • Debbie seems so genuine and nice, what a good mother :)

  • there are certain stores i specifically will not go in because the people who work there are so annoying and don't give you any space to just look.

  • fake it til you make it is most definately relevant. and debbie is very right about women wanting each other to fail or not be as sucessful as themselves.

  • Debbie is a hell of a saleswomen!

  • What a smart woman. This channel was a great idea!

  • love Debbie advice haha

  • i work at a restaurant and my thought is always 'be nice no matter how shitty im feeling & the customer is always right!!!'

  • this was really helpful i just started working in retail thanks!

  • First
