I'm quite sure I'm not the first one to make the Opeth comparison. Seriously if you played this song for me before I knew it and told me it was opeth I wold believe you unquestioningly and say. "Wow cool. I love this new opeth song" This isn't a bad thoing of course. And also not a coincidence. The two bands are really close. Mikael was even their vocalist for awhile. I consider opeth and katatonia like brother bands. Anyway beautiful song. I love this whole album.
What's with all the bickering. Instead of picking on people and calling them noobs how about just commenting about the video and song. And just because you go to someones channel and it says they're new to you tube doesn't mean they are. I have 6 different accounts. This one being the newest. So stop being you tube trolls lookin' for a fight. Oh and Kick ass song by a kick ass band!!
Ah, where to begin. The beautiful melancholic grace this song brings to me brings both passion and sorrow into my heart. The chorus sends delightful shivers of joy and fear down my spine. Love for life once bright. Amen Katatonia.
My brother was playing Katatonia on the computer while I was in the other room (Listening in on the awsome music) and I heard Mikael's voice, i was like, "Wtf?"
I'm generally really good at managing my mood when it comes to depressing music. I can feel the mood of a song, but not let myself go overboard. But I'll be damned if this and Nephilim don't come close to breaking me.
Anders the guitarist is heavily influenced by Opeth actually. Although Katatonia had started before Opeth, look how long it took them to progress into this direction and evolve their sound, when Opeth did it years ago and has since continued to do so.
Hey everybody! I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs heavily inspired by Katatonia and the music of Anders Nystrom and Jonas Renkse (including October Tide and Diabolical Masquerade). If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
Seriously, I don't see the similarities in sound between Opeth and Katatonia that some people have commented about. I'm a fan of both bands. However, I'm starting to lean more towards Katatonia. The absence of "death metal" vocals is actually very cool to me. It's a much more mature sound that Katatonia have developed on this album....it's one of the best albums out there at this time. Brilliant.
Could you please people stop complaining about who the #@$% produced this and which band is it similar to and ENJOY a piece of true artistic music! :)
i cant believe its october of 2010 and this is the first time ive actually taken the time to listen to this album.....and yes, i have BEEN a big katatonia fan since i first heard them back in 2000 after learning that mike (of opeth....my favorite group of all time btw) was a fan, and a friend, of theirs. 3 listens so far.....tremendous. discouraged ones will probably always be my favorite but this is already probably number 2.
Im using this song in my Capstone film. In my senior year of highschool we are required to make a 10 minute film documenting our years there.....Fuck that mines about Katatonia with a badass Music Video xD But thats only half the film
@HaloDudeFromYak Pretty much doing what Opeth is trying to do? You're forgetting the prog element of Opeth which entails a LOT of things that are absent in Katatonia and is explicitly important when making such a comparison.
Katatonia has adapted many sounds of Opeth but they are still very, very different.
i think katatonia is one of those bands who get better with time, like a good wine , i like brave murder day but this is a much better aproach in music and melodies, but the lyrics are perfect
This is easly the most heavily Opeth influenced song on the album, and it is Phenomenal. The whole album is Epically Addictive and Haunting, a true Harmonic MASTERPIECE! \m/
@Kapr1Sun i was talking more along the lines of music styles.... blood bath is pretty much all the death/doom metal parts of opeth an katatonia is all the softer parts... merge them together (the music styles) your pretty much back to opeth
even though they dont sound like a mteal band, they make it by their dark lyrics which i love. they're not too loud where u cant understand them. but i listen to metal for the instrumentals. but, ima gothic-metal band girl, but they pass! they're good!
@phichens no i dont think they are. in fact if u type in "katatonia influences" they list all of their most inspirational albums in making this album and theres no opeth.
@phichens Katatonia first album Release Date = Jhva Elohim Meth (1992) Opeth first Album release date = Orchid - (May 15th 1994) Opeth is one of the best Bands.! but they didnt influence katatonia, although they are friends, and work together, Mikael akerfeldt did some vocals on the album Brave Murder Days (1996) Jonas + Anders + Mikael , are in the band, Bloodbath first 2 Albums of, October Tide is amazing, Melodic Doom Metal, with Jonas + Fred Katatonia probably influenced Opeth someways
@dlkrdlkr I would suggest most of the newer opeth stuff in terms of similarity, damnation and watershed especially. In terms of the BEST opeth album obviously that is different for most individuals but deliverance is a personal favorite, especially the song deliverance, it is simply epic!
@dlkrdlkr Windowpane, Harvest, Mater's Apprentices (after about 3:50), The Drappery Falls for a good while sounds similar, and Credence are just a few songs from Opeth that have a soft sound like this. Check out their album Damnation, it captures this song's feeling almost to a Tee.
@dlkrdlkr i personally think opeth are alot more unique than katatonia (both are great bands though), and honestly, this sounds exactly like akerfeldt voice wise, i actually thought it was him
@tuulenkoti If you listen to BloodBath then that is basically Opeth and Katatonia mixed. Just Death Metal. The guitarist for Katatonia is the guitarist for BloodBath...
Just to clarify, Åkerfeldt was never a "member" of Katatonia, he helped with vocals after Jonas wrecked his voice, hence the sharp change in musical direction.
I cant agree anymore with the comment about sounding like the cure, there is darkness and melancholy, yet a strong feeling of hope. Similar to a lot of the cure songs.
Lastly, no no no Åkerfeldt was not involved with the production of the album he simply listened to it with Jonas (both who are old friends now) and commented on it.
Well sure he didn't officially help with the songs...but just listen to this song as best example or sleeper or criminals...they sound so much like Opeth. I guess Akerfeldt gave them some advice in songwriting and also i'm sure that the guys from katatonia studied the opeth style very carefully to get new ideas for their own albums. Also especially on this song the singer sounds soo much like akerfeldt in the singing. don't get me wrong i love those albums and the new opeth influenced sound.
Oh and fyi Åkerfeldt was only involved at the end there was a interview somewhere (I'm sure on Katatonia's site) where they said they sat down together and listened to the album several times and commented etc, he did not help with any production or musical direction!!
Agreed -- It is a pure myth Mike helped Katatonia on this album - People's interpretative skills are off. All he said in his early ALbum review was he listened to the material. He appeared on BMD and SoD and had some backround role for DO & TD but in terms of this album he did not help with the album at all. Not too mention; on the whole where comparisons can be made about Opeth and Kat for this song; the whole album does not sound like an Opeth album at all.
I dunno dude, Im a pretty big Opeth fan, and when I heard this I actually thought "shit,Mike made a guest appearance", and I have people telling me hes not on this album? This song more then anything sounds like Mike. mainly cuz the way the vocals are i suppose, the melody is very Opeth esque as opposed to the othe rmelodies int he album which dont move about much this rises and falls in very Opethesque manor
I couldn't agree more, its not a bad thing sounding more like Opeth, what I love is that it is still unique but they have evolved there sound, people are never happy if they had released another samey cd they would complain and if they develop there sound people complain. I truly feel sorry for people who cannot open there minds and enjoy the music for the music, so what if it isn't the same as brave murder day! Music is evolution, the opposite to evolution is stagnation, and stagnation is death
Actually Opeth existed years before Katatonia existed and Mikael only did the vocal tracks on Brave Murder Day. Not sure where you got your info but it's all wrong. And Katatonia sounds MUCH more like The Cure than like Opeth.
Mike was never IN Katatonia, he helped the vocals during their transition. He never claimed to be big part of the group. And Opeth was around almost a decade before Katatonia, more if you include Akerfeldt's musical projects without the Opeth moniker.
@krazefool - So what if i do agree with myself? If it affects you so much that I am a "noob", I would stop reading my comments. Clearly your a bit simple and for that i forgive you.
@krazefool what the hell do you mean "before he ever sang soft" mikael was "singing soft" since before opeth was even a name. also its not just the vocals that sound like Opeths, its the music. the first thing i thought when i heard katatonia was "whoa this is like if tool and opeth had a baby". Katatonia is still unique though, and i love them. but YOU my friend, are being a "noob"
why are people giving thumbs down on the comments that say this cd sounds like opeth... because it to me sounds just like opeth, which isnt a bad thing
it has nice riffs but as a whole it is not so much convincing. This album lacks something that was apparent in previous Katatonia releases. However, I need to listen more to it - as for now "Longest Year" and "Nephilim" are my favs
