  • VDI Or VMDK??

  • thanks some virus stopped me using ubuntu 11.04 so I did this with linux mint and it worked!

  • good tutorial, thank you !

  • Can you answer me these questions? When i put 512 mb ram for ubuntu and i close virutal box will my windows use those 512 mb?And when i am installing do i have to chooshe only 1 hdd or there are all my HDD's?

  • 1000 Mb is not 1 Gb,

    1024 Mb is 1Gb

    Just so you know

  • @avatarluke technically your right but in actual fact 1000 mb is 1 gig

  • @helipro555

    8 Bits = 1 Byte

    1024 Bytes = 1 KiloByte

    1024 KiloBytes = 1 MegaByte

    1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte

    1024 GigaBytes = 1 TeraByte

  • @avatarluke yes yes but as i said usually the 24 mb/gig is used for like formatting n stuff

  • @avatarluke

    1024 terabytes = 1 petabyte

    1024 petabytes = 1 exabyte

    1024 exabytes = 1 zettabyte

    1024 zettabytes = 1 yottobytes

  • @callan102 yottobytes lol Thanks for carrying on the train bro!

  • wait... When you stop running VirtualBox, you will not have 1GB RAM using anymore, right? If you back to use VirtualBox, you will use 1GB again, right?

  • @Eduardogd2 Pretty much.

  • if you choose a higher ram it minus down your PC's ram ryt?

  • hi @Illage2

I haved download ubuntu but it is in rar file.....

    what im gonna do next?

  • thanks.. it really help me to install win7 on vbox..

  • Two firefox icons. Why?

  • @skammskammskamm One is for the beta of FireFox.

  • is this vista or windows 7 ?

  • @1181timothy Vista, look below

  • @1181timothy It's 7.

  • @agentmax69 Yeah I know that, but 24 is less than 50 so we round it up to the nearest 100. Hence 1000.

  • @PJMAN2952 Its not that it doesn't take 64bit, its that 64bit can be unstable (meaning it crashes a lot) 32bit is probably the best one to use as its more stable.

  • even tho i installed it onto the virtual machine, can i somehow still get rid of my windows to install ubuntu, because the only way my computer would let me install ubuntu was with vb

  • @ThorvaldFan999 Yeah you can. If you look on the Ubuntu website it tells you how to install it there.

The website also tells you how to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu so you can switch between them when needed.

  • @illage2 no i meant can i use the vb to erase my windows and install linux because for some reason i cant get linux to install any other way

  • it sais i need a kernal. Where can i get one?

  • Great video 10/10 keep the great work up and if u know how to do with hazard osx would be sweet :)

  • Camtasia <3

  • heyyy can i borrow ur phone no. ! I am from india

  • could you make a updated version?

  • im having some trouble, virtualbox looks different now.. so i cant seem to find where im suppose to click to mount the .iso file... would be awesome if someone would help me out!

  • @iHaavTV I will make an updated version of this video when I get the chance. I still need to install my screencasting software.

  • Karmic Cola?! you mean Karmic Koala?

  • @ViaNocturna85 Yeah, I got mixed up there for a second.

  • is this cool or what

  • i miss the old youtube ;(

  • maybe illage i can have your help?if you can :) i have an old pc and i want to install linux i dont know how i make this but this is .iso and i install in my new pc with virtual box like this tutorial if you can help me to install the 'Standar Mode'

  • I know your password, its john!

  • @YuTubeStuff Nope. That would be too easy to guess :)

  • Help! I am using Win 7, but I CANNOT get the options for selecting the image file. So i tried burning it onto a disc, but it didnt work. WHAT TO DO????

  • @Shikhargpt Once you have made a Virtual Machine, go into its settings and select the Ubuntu/Linux ISO you want to use. Then run the Virtual Machine and follow the on screen instructions.

  • lol mcafee

  • Any specific way to download the .iso? I don't want to overwrite windows!

  • @SlimySnail44 Yeah from the website.

  • @illage2 Well I figured it out by now :P. That's not what I meant at the time. I had meant like a place to download it to, like what folder, but I see now that it doesn't matter. Thanks anyways.

  • @SlimySnail44 No worries.

  • @SlimySnail44 just save the install

  • does that take memory from my own OS???

  • @Wanderon1 Yup!

  • @YuTubeStuff i know when i tried it!

  • @Wanderon1 Virtual Box does, so it can add it to a Virtual Machine. If you have 4GB Ram (or more) You shouldn't have a problem.

  • I downloaded 10.10 but when I put in password & username i can't g any forward.

  • @3houghton

Make sure that your username isn't capitalized, and that your passwords match.

  • Very well made video tutorial. Professional quality.

  • i dont have a cd to install :(

  • @xxCMxxPunk You don't need a CD download the ISO from the website and then install it on Virtual Box.

  • Thanks

  • Thanks

  • what are you using to record your desktop?

  • @FrankoFilms BBFlashback pro.

  • Thanx

  • Comment removed

  • whats the theme name for your firefox theme?

  • Is it worth it? because I have small Hard Drive space... please answer

  • @pat20105 Depends really, HDD space is not the main issue. The main issue is how much RAM and CPU and Graphics power you have.

If you reserve about 8GB HDD space you should be good to go.

  • ti si makedonec

  • nice video helped alot

  • thank you very match for this tutorial

  • I actually found out that I can dual boot Ubuntu because I couldnt get virtualbox installed the boot up time is Soooooooooooo fast on Ubuntu and then when you log in it doesn't even have to load all that shit you can start doing what your doing right away

  • @KillaKidxX5342 Too true.

  • alright so virtualbox is just a program so if i install linux in that nothing will happen to my actual OS (Windows Vista)?

  • @KillaKidxX5342 Correct. Nothing should happen to your Actual OS which makes using Virtual Machines excellent for testing Ubuntu.

  • @KillaKidxX5342 No it shouldn't. I am using Vista myself and it has had no impact.

  • If i select the "erase and all that" (dual boot) does that harm my win_7, when i start my computer, does i start windows 7 or ubuntu, i mean does dual boot delete my win_7?

  • @MysoftwareCorp It shouldn't. Dual Booting basically splits your hard drive space up. So on one half you would have Windows 7, and the other half can be taken up by another OS.

I do not recommend it however if you don't know what you are doing.

  • I have an Ubuntu cd that was send to me. how can I install ubuntu in the virtual box using the cd that was send to me? Also can some 1 tell me how i can uninstall the box if i don't want it?

  • Tank you much thanks

  • damn. you have 16 gigs of memory?

  • @xXgamer678Xx Nope. I have 4 GB of memory, if I had the room in my machine I go as high as 32GB.

  • Thank you very much! I've needed to learn how to do this so I can Install Vista inside of my Ubuntu VirtualBox! Much appreciated!

  • damn ppl how can you use firefox??!

  • Does that VBOX thing in the Ubuntu Desktop come automatically, as a result of using virtual box? Or where does it come from?

  • Once I download linux files where can I find the image

  • how did you get those icons to look like windows 7

  • @HabboClaine If you are referring to the task bar, I am using a free-ware application called "ViGlance" check it out.

  • can i install ubuntu 32bit on an win7 64 bit

  • @McBack1994 On Virtual Box you can, but if your thinking of dual booting then no.

  • @illage2 I used win 7 and ubuntu as dual boot(grub) and it worked so i think u can.

  • does this work on a 64 bit windows 7

  • @GagesIPod Yeah it should. I'm running 64bit Vista.

  • @agentmax69 I rounded it up to the nearest 1000, there is no need to argue about it. I wasn't being specific anyway.

  • @agentmax69 is that not what i said?

  • Great tutorial, thanks!

  • what do i do if i have the live CD cuzz i have ubuntu 9.10 cd and 10.04 cd do i just choose my hardive (E:) ???

  • @pkemr4 it doesn't mattter which one you choose they can both be installed as full OS's on Virtual Box.

  • what r u talking about man???

  • Thanks :) .. i followed this to install lucid-lync on my system xD

I have lucid, and i run in virtual machine lucid ..

Why you may ask? Now i can attempt to make plymouth splash screens, without the need to restart every 5seconds

  • Thank you this is the only guide that actually works.

  • Thanks... good video... life saver!

  • at 6:26 you said sumin about the 'disc'. I am kinda confused on that part. do you have to burn it to a disk?

  • @TheIceActiveTeam You don't need to use a disc if you don't want too.

  • 1000 isn't a gig..

  • @e0b1ff I know, but in todays society with always rund it up to the nearest 100.

  • @e0b1ff it is

  • @kakka626 1024MB is a gig...

  • did everything and i still get the Desktop Effects cannot be loaded

  • @t3hL4z0r Enable 3D acceleration and then you need to install compiz. I'll make a tutorial on doing that on Virtual Box at a later date.

  • thank you :)

  • at 07:30 all my boots fail , can u tell me why? ive done exactly like in the video except the differences in the newer virtualbox that i got....

  • @antifjortizen i suggeist you buy some new boots:D

  • @antifjortizen I'm going to make another video based on the new version of Virtual Box.

  • Hi, thanks for the nice tutorial. I wanted to ask if I were to run more than one virtualbox at the same time, and I have an i7 quad core processor, does it matter if I select 4 cores for each virtual box? thanks!

  • @map2249 If your running them all at the same time then yeah it would matter. You need to also make sure that your normal OS has some resources left to run.

  • I have a question if i were to install this using virtual box on windows 7 is it hard to remove it if i dislike it , new to this virtual box.

  • @Kevinsilhouette No not at all. Virtual Box works the same across every operating system.

  • @illage2 Thanks for the info =D Great video

  • Nice one, been looking all evening to do this. Just run your tutorial and display settings are now sorted.

  • hey how to make it full screen?? =[

  • @killzone1997 you need to click machine, then full screen mode OR press crtl+4. press ctrl+4 to get back out.

  • @killzone1997 NO WAIT SORRY ITS CTRL+F

  • ty so much

now i am finally running ubuntu :D

  • thx so much and 1more thing how to make it full screen?

  • Hi, it is very nice tutorial. I'm absolutely new to Virtual box and I want to give a try. I am running, xp, ubuntu 9.10, edubuntu, and linux Mint 8 KDE on the same machine, each on separate partition. I want all OSes on Mint 8KDE host. I have 2 questions:

Prepare disk space 'Where do you want to put Ubuntu 9.10?

    You chose:

Erase and use the entire disk.

Q1:if I choose this, will all the other OSes be erased?

Q2: I used grub2 for booting. Do I need to install grub on guest os (ubuntu or xp)?

  • @yeschingakham If your using Ubuntu on Virtual Box you can erase and use entire disc.

You wouldn't need to install anything else on the Guest OS.

  • If have 1gb of RAM. how much virtual RAM should i use for Ubuntu?

  • @kiwiryannz 500mb or under

  • @kiwiryannz I like to conserve about 50% for my own system. So its best you use 512MB for Ubuntu.

  • at 2:16 it gives me this error when im selecting the iso:

    Result Code:

    E_FAIL (0x80004005)

    Component:

    Medium

    Interface:

    IMedium {aa8167ba-df72-4738-b740-9b84377ba9f1}

    Callee:

    IVirtualBox {2158464a-f706-414b-a8c4-fb589dfc6b62}

    help?

  • Also How do you get it so when you go full screen it also goes full screen?

  • @1995billy Install the Virtual Box guest additions and then restart the Virtual Machine and press Right CTRL + F.

  • Everytime i get in it like locks my mouse in and i cant get it out how do i take it out?

  • press the right ctrl key

  • ok ill have to see when i get back on my computer

  • @1995billy Or you can install the guest additions which will make it seamless.

  • hey when i download ubuntu 9.10 it fininish the download and everything. but when i try to open it with virtual box wich one do i click??? i already extracted

  • You don't need to extract the ISO file. Just mount it on Virtual Box and then install it as normal.

  • nice video. i learn a lot with this. thanks. one question. what program you used to record this explanation. thanks

  • Bbflashback pro

  • @illage2 whats that?

  • that processor thing at 7:00 is gray what shall i then do?

  • Yeah it should although they take a little more work to install.

  • my one installed perfectly but the display is not coorecy its like all mashed up multicolour.

Im using 128mb in the thingy and also 3d acceleration whats wrong!

  • What are you using... Win7 or Vista? :D

  • @afroman10496 Vista

  • thanks :D

  • wtf i did everything and then i get a virtualbox screen saying startup has failed. wat should i do? plz reply

  • Sounds like a problem with the ISO file your using. Try downloading it again and use that one. I had the same issue myself doing that solved it.

Also make sure you not trying to install a 64bit version as that can sometimes error out.

  • Is it also working like that on Mac?

  • If your talking about the Mac version of Virtual Box then yeah.

  • ii have reinstalled it and it still says boot failed do u know wht is wrong?

  • and dude when i did the reboot and settings thing it comes up with yelow text and wants me to enter a shell when i start it wht do i do???

  • thx dude do i just do the same stuff for another os eg. windows 7?

  • You know this is the first Tutorial I made as a partner.

  • Thanks! I tried this once before and it was quite sluggish and I couldn't full screen the window.

I didn't know about the Guest Additions thing before, but now (thanks to you) those problems have resolved themselves!

Is it possible to enable 2d acceleration now that the guest additions are there?

  • @PocketDrummer 2D Acceleration will only work if you are using a Version of Windows as a Guest OS. It is not supported under Linux, but yeah it should work just fine.

  • hi nice video, does compiz fusion run on this?thanks

  • Yeah it does but when running Ubuntu you need to add a few commands to the terminal.

  • thanks, how can i add a commands to the terminal?whats the step by step procedure?thanks much

  • thanks

  • Thanks awesome Vid!

  • i cant use an image file???????????

  • Is your windows pirated?

  • its called windows 7 RC retard its free

  • When did Windows 7 come into this subject? It looks like your the retard here for bringing another subject up that has nothing to do with the video in question.

  • yeah =]

  • @illage2 haha you tell him

  • @saurabhsgupta My Vista is genuine.

  • it says FATAL : NO MEDIUM FILE FING FOUND

    plz Helppppp! :(

  • Sweet, I wanna try out Ubuntu

  • Go ahead it's all free so it's worth a shot.

  • lol im from zimbabawe

  • will this take up a lot of my hard drive or ram memory?

  • no u only need atleast 256 mb ram

    thanks for asking though

  • @superaarontube Depends on how many system resources you want to give the Virtual Machine.

  • I don't know what I did but now I am being forced to scroll up and down and side to side to see the desktop... Is there a way to shrink it so I don't need to scroll? Or put it back to normal???

  • 5* :)

  • melomonster007 I don't think you can. As far as i understand, virtual box makes a 'virtual computer' that doesn't really exist (except in virtual space), it just pretends to, so you can install one os kind of 'on top of' another, and it doesn't affect it. If you have a dual-booted system, then both os's are installed onto your actual existing computer, so i don't think you can link the virtual and real ubuntu installs. Or maybe you can but it's ridiculously complicated. But I could be wrong :)

  • Actuauallty you can. If you have the latest version of VirtualBox and enable 3D acceration then it should work. Alternativy there is some code you can type into the terminal to get it working.

  • hi can you install the ubuntu compiz fusion on virtual box?im on a macbook...thanks

  • Yeah. You should be able to.

  • ok thanks...where do i get it in virtual box?what item do i click to get the compiz fusion on virtual box?thanks
