  • that looked more like watercolor or thined oil paint to me but what matters is the result right? igor does it a bit different

  • I though in the dry brush technique the brush is dry all the time, u just dip it in the oil paint take out the excess paint on a tissue or are there more than 1 dry brush technique?

  • When u use paint thinner (turpentine) It's not drybrush anymore right?

  • i dont get it/ why are there top comments for people evn though they were one year ago!!!!!!!!!! i want a top comment

  • @emaanfaiz I voted your comment up!

  • dude what happen to your eye

  • you added medium? dry brush does not use any medium (except from Igor Kazarin that he adds 2 drops of sewing machine oil) and you're suppose to brush away most of the paint on your brush before putting it to watercolour paper.

  • @divedivedive You are absolutely correct. I went to his website at the time that I made this video and it was using the "google translate" translation. I did not fully understand then but his site is much clearer now. I am in the process of making another tutorial.

  • HEY! I HAVE A SUGGESTION.

can you do an updated portrait drawing of Justin Bieber please. since his had haircuts and his face is more shaped than it used to be. okay, thanks :)

  • nelson mandela lives on my street :P

  • the color pencils were a good idea! the portrait does not have as much of an "airbrushed" quality as igor kazarin's portraits but it still turned out very well! i'm going to have to try this technique sometime for myself :) thanks for sharing!

  • I don't mean to be rude to either kazanjianm or nelson mandela, but it kind of looks like his eyes are pointing in opposite directions

  • looks like you used wet paint (thinned with turpentine), is it really a dry brush technique?

  • amazing

  • were can you get a kneaded eraser for the cheapest and how much do they cost

  • @artisticgeniusdude They are pretty cheap less than $5

  • @artisticgeniusdude hey, kneaded erasers are usually found in any art supply store (ie. dickblick, utrechtart, pearlpaint, and even office depot <- all those stores have websites so you can buy them online as well). the price depends on how big you want the eraser to be and which brand you choose, but generally, i've noticed that prices are from around 70 cents to a few dollars. quite inexpensive!

  • For the first time of doing Dry Brush technique in oil paints that is very good! Great job, even after learning art at 20.

  • Nice work!! you are very good.

  • Thanks for explaining this technique you are the only one, please do more tutorial.

  • i think u used too much oil....this isnt really dry brush....but still looks nice....if u started at 20, how old r u now....jw

  • this is not the dry brush technique. but is an excellent work....

  • Not bad Appreciate it.. thanks

  • He Merrill... thanks for taking the time to explain this... I've watched a few of the vidoes on youtube and nobody explains this technique as well as you...

    Cheers...

    L.

  • Press 4 and then 9... His face changed a lot between those 2 points =)

  • you have such a cool voice, reminds me of that guy from predators, or from king kong......you kinda look like him too XD

  • I came to this after seeing the portrait video you saw as Id like to try tequ. You've done a very good portrait there but you seemed to be painting more like pen and ink style whereas the Igor chap seemed to be more 'drawing' with his brush. ???

  • Thank you sooo much for explaining!! But I can't imagine that it is easy to rub light tones with the eraser out ( I hope you understand what I mean because I'm german :D)

the last question: do you get the grey tones with mixing the oilcolor with water?

  • you are the first person to explain this in such a way that I can understand what is going on. thank you so much. I am so excited to make a trip to the store and buy my supplies today.....oh and one question is your brush really stiff? and you said oil paint and watercolor paper correct? Thank you once again...

  • When I grow up I want to draw like you.

  • 5:29 he burps. Excellent artwork

  • Are you using Terp with the paint too o: ? It looks very watery. But this is a great try! C: I couldnt do this. xD

  • wow exelent video thank i well like to know if u have dvds or tutoriol or where can buy u material

  • hi sir! how do you blend the colors?

and how about using the water color paper?

what is the difference between the ordinary sketch pad and water color paper?

  • I wanna know what kind of paint you use?is it nesessery to be oil or is possible to work with tempera, and why on water paper? And last what kind of rubber eraser u use is there some special,or i may to use any, couse i'm interesting how with normal rub. u remove oil paint?may i use "bread" rubber?

  • i coundt picture what you would look like with your voice! ahah

  • I really liked it alot! Good job what city are you in>???

  • hi, thumbs up! this is a good video....but will the oil rot the paper after some time?

  • nice work man

  • you did excelent on black features arts and it was ur first time.. ha ... ok for myself i cant imagine wat dry brush is but u were just using oil paint and turp.. thats truely believable is i have the same skills of pencil-ing and my painting techniques would also come out transitioning form from where i know shadings and wats not brushes and wats not large areas also with brushes ... and blank white areasss.... yeah so.. looking forward for to complete more master pieces in the future..thanks

  • looks like Morgan Freeman

  • i think the left one looks more like Nelson Manlela!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JK (just kidding) it fantastic

  • You make a good ketch artist for the police.

  • did you add water too your oil or something coz i thought the whole idea of drybrush was that the brush is always dry ??

i do dry brush technique aswell after being inspired by igor a month ago and i have been told my paintings are really good but my oil does not look like yours.

  • AMAZING!

  • Hello sir, I'm very interested in getting into dry brushing,it seems like I would pump out some nice art if I got into it... so, could you do me a favor and do a video or send me a list of things I need when beginning to Dry brush. Thank you.

  • why did u put oil on ur title .. its clearly not oil .. it has to be acrylic....

  • Hello Merrill, did Igor use thinner too? It seemed like he used a dry brush for a lot of the light shading and blending on Johnny Depps portrait. I can't tell if you used dry brush for blending or not. Did you?

  • im so sorry. but its not oil.

  • Great Video, What paper and paint did you use? I tried the same technique on Strathmore bristol board 100 lb. water color paper and Winsor & Newton water base oil paint. When I tried to blend the skin tones it was really blotchy and it would not erase at all..Any tips on what supplies to use and how to blend to where it's not blotchy?? thanks for posting the video ...

  • @TheAbit38 hey i jus seen your comment and i do it aswell , i use brushes which are dry and i use oil which is straight from the tube with no water or anything added, and u just need to do the dark bits first and as the paint fades out on the paint brush doo the light bits , then just blend it in by brushing lightly over it and it will work , and they wont look perfect first time, keep practicing and u will get there (:

  • you look like you need A LOT more sleep....

  • Hi I realllly wanted to ask how by using just black oil paint how you made it lighter in grey etc/ thankyou so much

  • Super work! +

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi, beautiful portrait! i'm gonna try this out :) very interesting tecnique as well. One question, though.. those colour pencils you use, are those ordinary pencils or charcoal pencils?

  • Interesting video, great work too.Ive watched Igor Kazarins videos all the time.He definitley has his technique down.....lots and lots of shading. Its really cool that he commented on this video.Keep up the good work.

  • Its odd but I see many videos on painting. Every single one of them is different. And also every artist has a different slant to what they do and how and why.

Yours is as intrigueing. It isnt my vein or theme but I always look around me and see what others are doing. In the western vein YoUTube has shown me many variants from the mundane western style,a nd this is a pleasant variable.

Best wishes and I will call by again soon.

  • what are you using to make the white highlights? This is a really good portrait of him! Everything looks really awesome, especially for your first try! :D please get back to me on my question, I really want to try this out!

  • OMG I LOVE YOU!!! THANK YOU SOO MUCH!! ;A;

I wanted to know how he also did that technique after watching his Johnny Depp video. >w<

I love that you share with us all these amazing traditional art techniques!

    o3ob

  • good rendering but you wen a bit heavy handed on this awesome portrait but it wont last long due to being on paper

  • Hello Merrill, I found your work here after looking at Igor Kazarin's work and further researching to see if I can find more on the topic of dry brush -oil. I have emailed him a few times to inquire as to wheather he does lessons or non time lapse demo of his dry brush technique(s). You are getting there! Looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

    Cheryl

  • I like it... Thank you for sharing

  • and also, what did u thin out the oil-colours with? Terpentine and what else? :)

  • Hello! :) Im an artist too, and I want to learn that technique too! And I have to say, WOW!! U r great! And youd did this sooo well, and it was your first time using this technique!!! :)

but Kazarin is like blending everything out, it looks like that in his videos, but u didn´t? I just wonder if its possible to blend everything with an dry brush? :)

Thanks for this video, i will add u as my friend :D

  • hi........ bro!! hope its goin on well wit u.. i jus wanted to know the brushes you use to implement such an art.. can you name them.. and the colour you use.. is it an oil paint? plz clear me wit this.. good day, plz don forget to reply. this is akhil

  • Hi Kazanjianm, do you think that you could possibly make a tutorial on how to draw and shad nelson mandella to go along with this video? if you could that would be sooooooooo great! Thanks by the way your drawing was great and I love the new paint scheme!!!!!!!XDXDXDX

  • thank god i'm not the only one who loves oil colors and hates water colors btw i swore not to paint with water colors before too i just hate it :D thanks for posting you did a great job and it really helped a lot and btw your voice is so calming :D:D

  • i love it, fantastic mate!!!

  • Amazing :D

  • You should paint Morgan Freeman, another interesting face.

  • thank you so much for walking us through this technique. I just came across Igor's channel and was amazed at the technique I have never heard about!!! You did a great job and once again, thanks!

  • not relevant, but you are handsome :)

  • @autobatmitzvah Best comment EVER autobatmitzvah!

  • god its amazing what people are capable of doing- just b&w paint with brush and paper (give or take).

  • Wow!! I love ALL of your techniques...and the emotions your painting express. Watching this take form was beautiful! I think anyone could learn to paint from you :)

As usual, thanks so much for sharing!!!

  • im am a 16 year old student about to start an A-level course of art in england and i wondered whether you have any tips on painting and drawing as to how make the result look more realistic . amazing painting also :) Thanks

  • GREAT for the first time :)

  • Wow...splendid. For a first time dry brush, this is great! Even if it wasn't your first time, i'd still be impressed.

  • Wow this looks great, from the thumb nail I thought it was a pencil drawing. Could you use a regular eraser for the highlights as well as a kneaded also ?

  • beutifull work

  • painters have told me that it's best to paint in b&w values, before painting in color. is that true?

  • @cartoonblock Traditionally paintings were started with earth colors made from soil. This was done for two reasons. 1.) It was "Dirt cheap" (joke only partially intended) 2.) It allowed painters to solve the "form" and "tone" parts of the painting. I think that the bigger motive was the cost. For instance, most of the blue in the HISTORY of the Renaissance Era came from an Azurite deposit in Afghanistan. It took months to get to this deposit and only a limited quantity could (more)

  • @cartoonblock (part 2) be taken back. So the cost was ASTRONOMICAL. Only the greatest painters could get their hands on it. Patrons would specifically state the amounts used in contracts (and this was JUST for one color). After colors were synthetically produced, underpaintings (slowly) became less popular. Sketching is often done mono chromatically, but it is not as complex as an underpainting. Just think....... blues are created digitally now in computer codes....CRAZY!

  • wooow this is nice video ........and first time I see this technique .... I like it . Thumb up :)

  • @Yusrararts Thank you!!! :)

  • @kazanjianm Thanks for sharing your knowledge about this technique. With your explanations now I got to know what I needed and didn´t find watching other videos. Thanks a lot.

  • @b1i2g3j4o5e6 That is one of my top requests! Stay tuned!

  • Wow, great work!

  • @Lovemymuffe Thank you! :)

  • Woot awsome

  • @antcobra Woot! Woot! antcobra. Thank you!

  • Hello Merrill Kazanjian

My Congratulations, I liked your portrait. Your attempt at Dry Brush is Very Good

  • @PortraitDrawing Igor, You are an INCREDIBLE artist. I strive to be as good as you someday. The quality of your works are an inspiration to me. Thank you for writing me back!

  • Great work man!

But I have one Question... where do you put your camera? Directly above you?

  • how long did it take you to make that ?

  • @tondu007 Slightly more than an hour.

  • before I saw the vid but just the link I thougt: oh another realistic great work of art by Merrill.... and after that I thought : and it's with pencils.... but when saw the hole vid I was amaized of the way you paited it and actually IT'S SO AWESOME THAT I'M SPEACHLESS........

Today I watched all your vid's and if I could thumb's up it all on this video and more than 1 thumb's up YOU MERRILL KAZANJIANM WOULD HAVE THE MOST THUMBED UP VIDEO EVER

  • @Promistor You are the best Promistor! I love to experiment. I would get bored otherwise. I truly appreciate your support!

    -Merrill

  • you dont miss anything out lol

  • I'm going to the store tomorrow to get some watercolor paper haha... I gotta try this.

  • @PacificPastime I said (and did) the exact same thing!!!!

  • that is amazing

  • @gmodroxx5 Thank you! :)

  • by the way it looks REALLY great.

  • @PacificPastime Thank you :)

  • amazing:)

  • @xXxslipknot771xXx Thank you so much xXxslipknot771xXx !

  • @kazanjianm hey no probs u r amazing!!!!!!! do u take request? if u do can u draw Jared Leto from 30 seconds to mars or kat von d:)

  • @xXxslipknot771xXx I have been drawing the most frequent requests. I actually have had a few for Jared Leto.

  • @kazanjianm can u show me:)

  • Wait....I'm so confused what paint are you using in this? And then I saw you using an eraser....and a pencil??

  • @PacificPastime Oil Paint, Watercolor paper and a Kneaded Eraser.....I finished it with a color pencil. Isnt that a bizarre mix?

  • @kazanjianm but how can you erase oil paint?

  • @PacificPastime That was exactly my thought! The oil was partially neutralized by the paint thinner and it seemed to sink in to the watercolor paper, leaving a residue on the surface which was like graphite.

  • @kazanjianm wow...mind boggling....did you say PortraitDrawing uses this technique?

  • @PacificPastime Yes! His portraits are mind blowing.

  • @kazanjianm Yea his portraits are perfection... So I'm guessing you could use this technique with color as well??

  • @PacificPastime Yeah, I saw him do a Brittney Spears portrait in color.

  • that was hot i learned alot from your vids thanks

  • @Tremiasthegreat I truly appreciate that! Im glad that my vids helped.

    -Merrill

  • first or second XD hahahha wooot

  • @stonecoldjordan You did it Stonecoldjordan!
