Why spend the money on Ares 1 when we have Falcon 9? The Falcon 9 holds more people, its safer, costs a lot less, and its almost ready to go. Keep Ares 5, but replace Ares 1 with the Falcon 9 rocket.

It's not ridiculous. This is a new vehicle, and this will allow NASA to gain valuable experience. Did Dr. von Braun launch his Saturn V rocket with a crew on the very first launch?

The answer was "NO." (Apollos 4 and 6 were unmanned test flights)

This is not comparable. The Ares1-X is not the planned and ready-to-fly Ares1 launch vehicle. It is a usual 4-segment Space Shuttle solid rocket booster with just a 5th-segment mass simulator and a second stage and spacecraft mockup on top of it.

The Ares1-X launch just is a public show. The first real test flight will be Ares1-Y.
