  • In remembrance of Cecil W. Garrett, Marcos DeCampos and Greg Nowak who left us much to early in their lives. Those who loved them miss them so much.

  • Beautiful!

  • this song eases the pain for the ones who have passed

  • I saw Eric Bogle in Stirling in August 2005. He dedicated this song to our baby Sam who died as a baby 5 years before. If Sam had lived, the day following the concert would have been his first day at school. My wife & i cried buckets as Eric sang the song beautifully.

  • John's version of Eric's song has gotten me though a very sad time in my life--it still does. Magnificent!

  • When you get a writer like Eric Bogle and a performer like John McDermott teamed up like they've been over the years, you can't beat that combination. Thanks for posting. Pete

  • My Biology teacher went to John's show last night, and told me to listen to this song because my twin sister passed away 2 weeks ago. This is beautiful

  • i just hope music like this, you know, soft and nostalgiac, will always be sung and be remembered. He sort of reminds me of perry como. I am 20 yo btw.

  • @comeonfolks Thanks for the comment...but Perry Como??? Perry was probably the most unemotional and one-dimensional singer to ever make it big. Please don't lump John into the same category as Perry. :-)

  • One of John's best !!

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!

  • John should have been invited to sing at the Vancouver Winter Olympics opening, he is a real Canadian Treasure & deserves World wide Acclaim !

  • Every once in a while I need to listen to this when I miss Mom & Dad & JG the most....

  • Incredible, brings tears to my eyes and thinks of the ones I've lost

  • when I listen to this, it makes me think of my parents, and of a friend who died at the age of 52 five years ago. and it brings me some comfort to know they are still there guiding me

  • Love this song, john just gets it right.

    Louden.

  • ty for this beautifull song i just lost my favorite uncle that just passed on oct 17 2009 i want to play this at his wake ty GAIN E GOD BLESS FOR THIS WONDERFULL TUNE

  • Another outstanding performance from John. I agree with Rossmc about the Eric Bogle songs especially "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "Green Fields of France". Many have recorded the song, but John McDermott's version of the latter one is WITHOUT equal !!

  • Absolutely wonderful and uplifting. A special thanks to kate285 for sharing this with me, I really needed to hear something like this this morning. Peace to everyone!

  • bertaberra -

I want to see him too! Last year I had tickets, but then had back surgery close to the time of his performance, so I could not possibly go. So now I have to wait until he is in the New England area again, maybe NH in 2010.

  • I am touched by this song each time I hear it. I think mostly of my mother.

We first heard this song at a John McDermott concert in Erie, Pa., in 2002. My mom went up to him to say hello as he stood in the lobby before the concert. She was thrilled. And she shed a tear when he sang this. Her thoughts were with her late grandson.

  • I don't only want to hear him specialy want to SEE him... mmmm

  • Why is it that for the last few years just about all I listen to is John McDermott.

  • I know him he calls me the fish whisperer. hes my BUDDY

  • aspen1987..THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG. THANKS FOR POSTING....LOVE JOHN MCDERMOTT...

  • WONDERFUL ...

  • Check out Eric Bogle who wrote this song. He's written several of the songs John McDermott sings

  • I love this song. It reminds me so much of my mother who passed away last year... she was my shining light, my North Star and my beacon in the night. Thanks for your beautiful rendition, John... I'm looking forward to your concert on Dec. 21st!

  • What a beautiful song, I've never heard it before. Thanks for the post!. I love this man.

  • The song was written by Eric Bogle., He has written some superb songs - check him out. This song was written after the Dunblane shootings in Scotland in 1996 - when a man walked into a school with a gun and shot dead 16 young kids and their teacher. This song was written for the kids (and their parents) but of course it can be applied to anyone who is bereaved.

But check out some of Eric Bogle's other somgs. You'll be doing yourself a huge favour I promise you. xx

  • The Man Is Awesome !!!!Nothing else decribes him...

  • On John's website you can get a Christmas DVD: Sharing Christmas with John McDermott and Friends. It comes with the CD of the same name via the online music store. I just got it and love it, some parts more than others. Performed July 2007. I've already watched it many times and have gotten used to John's new gray curls. It's not quite as polished as the PBS one, but if you love John, you'll love this.

  • Thanks for the info!

  • Thanks for this lovely song. John gets better looking as he gets older, lucky man.

  • Crikey! Three for three! Thanks again for all of your nice comments. Cheers!

  • Thank you for posting this here -- I first discovered John about four years ago, and this song is a favorite, reminding me of both my late mother and brother. I loved it so much, I even used it in a fan fiction story I was writing at the time -- a beautiful fit.

    Lovely... thank you!

  • Thank you for your nice comments about this post. I am most pleased you liked it. -Mac

  • I liked it so much I had to go out and get the DVD - The rest of it is pretty neat, too! Thanks for posting here so I would know about it. I only knew of the song because our classical music station played it and I vought the 'Rememberence' CD. I still just love it!

Mom, Steve, Aunt Ethel... I love you.

  • Macrosent: Thank you for the beautiful comment about the "Voyage". I just finished listening to "One Small Star", and let me tell you, it made me cry. I'd like to think that my Dad is a star up there somewhere shining down on me. Thank You so much for these beautiful songs!

  • I am pleased you like these songs as much as we do. And thanks again for your comments! -Mac

  • i first heard this song when i was 12 or 13 when he came to the kings warf thearter dad got us tickets

  • I had this song played along with a collage of pics, at my Father's funeral on the 18th June 2008. It was one of the most touching moments of the service for Dad.

  • You have my sympathy over your loss. My wife and I both lost our fathers when we were young. You might like one of my other John McDermott postings - "The Old Man." We have to fight-back the tears every time we hear it. May the worst day of your future be better than the best day of your past.

  • I've come to love John lately-through YouTube. Does he ever have live performances on the West Coast?

  • Thank you for posting this clip. I bought the Time to Remember album, but you are right, this is only on the dvd. I love the song and the singer. The dvd is wonderful and worth buying. Wish he'd make another one...

  • Agreed. His live appearances are sooooo good! He is a very animated and emotionally dynamic performer; this drives most sound engineers nuts! The only other DVD that he appears on (to my knowledge) is the Dublin concert with the Irish Tenors. I have posted one clip from that show ("Voyage").
