I've always likes The Mountain Goats but the interview before this makes him seem way pretentious. Is it just out of context or is he always like that?
Yes, I don't think the style suits him. I felt that way since I first saw him, but maybe I'm just used to seeing it on "modern" trendies who like attention. Maybe he just can't find a style that works. But, I don't think he sounds pretentious. From what I've gathered, he seems like a decent person with a deep appreciation for music and life, who has dealt with a lot of shit he is still emotionally bruised by. I hope he's made peace with his past, or at least someday will.
john if you are seeing this i saw you at the hole at the u of minnesota circa 1997 when matt olson from baloon guy and about thirteen others were in the crowd... and you healed peole with the rabbit song while i cheeked the depakote and flushed it down... i have the lp of gospel at colonus and it's yrs if ya want it barysands@yahoo. you frigggin know but just thanks and thanks some more ok?
kk, this guy is an absolute genius, get any cd/lp you can and listen... its all gold. ive never seen someone with such raw emotion, he signs every song as if the story was unfolding before his very eyes, once again genius.
Yay, the fourth part is finally out. I agree with the assessment of the sound. The interview was a lot louder than the song. I can't wait to get this album. It seems like one of the best yet in these Live At Amoeba shows. Tonight is a Mountain Goats concert that I really really wanted to go to, but all the tickets were sold out. While I'm still pretty upset about that, this video is making me feel better.
"You have to counter the bad sh*t by making good sh*t." Well said, sir.

Nothing pretentious there... if someone has a vocabulary and sings in a band and is american does not mean he is pretentious! hehehe

I hope so too, but generally people at peace with themselves make crappy music. Can't wait till november when they come to philly!

John is an amazing performer and a powerful song writer. <3
(the sound on this video is too low during his performance compared to the interview though)
