The tuning is (from low to high) B D F# G# C# E I think of it as E13.
I don't know if Steve Nichols is related to John Nichols. I'll have to ask him.

Is Steve related to John Nichols, who played bass with the late great Smith Dobson in San Jose's Garden City for so many years? If he is, that's a great jazz pedigree.
