Merzbow and Jandek are similar, composition-wise. Both make music with unconventional sounds and structures to an end that is neither improvised or completely written out but still has a clear goal in mind.

For all the debate on here, and aesthetics aside, this song just ROCKS!! The Rep rocks. None of it's in that Led Zep/Grand Funk way, but it's got the rock "thing."

i was at this show. was not expecting jandek at all! i bought the tickets as I wanted to see Keiji Haino, Current 93, Six Organs and richard Youngs. When "The Corwood Industries Representative" appeared my jaw hit the floor! Amazing, captivating gig - also worthy of a mention are the bassist (richard youngs) and drummer (alex nielson) who were utterly fantastic...
I feel New York spirit in it. Not only music, but atmosphere of this show. Music brings to mind no wave movement. It's something like a lighter Swans. Just WOW.
i feel like a lot of people get into this because it's subculture, and then they get there and wonder what the hell happened to the past 2 hours of their lives

Jandek's music is purely a hobby for him. He mostly funds and records his music all by himself, due to the fact that his main job is as a stockbroker (Corwood Ind. shares a telephone number with Sterling Smith Corp., Smith's main source of income). So Jandek's music is purely for his own enjoyment. If anyone else likes it, that's pure chance as far as he's concerned.
I started liking this more when the vocals came in. I don't know though for you super music elitists out there. I don't think you are suppose to analyze this so much.
i don't think its just as simple as enjoying something or not. eg learning the back story of an artist can be truly part of the parcel that helps you feel/love it, y know the myth of it. i think that some music needs an introduction to prepare you for whats to come. I'd kind of doubt it. To be honest with you, I actually find Jandek pretty difficult to listen to, and my admiration of his work comes from some inner level that isn't really cognitive, but not really instinctual, either. I just kind of feel it, in some weird way. I don't know if that's how other people understand it, but that's how I do. I'd never really go out of my way to call Jandek "good", but there's something about him that's very appealing.
What's with people insulting everybody who doesn't like this? Honestly, this is okay for maybe one listen for me. The Shaggs, on the other hand, actually have some creepy cool quality that I like for some reason.

I dont know what it is about jandek, but it always makes sense to me. It did the first time I heard it. Usually when I hear music for the first time that is radically non-standard and discordant I can appreciate some aesthetic things about it or find it stimuating, but I don't have an experience right away where I can connect with it. That always takes time or doesn't happen at all. But hearing Jandek for the first time was like hearing a language I didn't know I would understand.
Everyone who says this pretentious bullshit is enjoyable is just saying that so they can seem more "Sophisticated" or more "Open Minded". Fuck it this is boring and stupid and by no means music.

i was at this show. was not expecting jandek at all! i bought the tickets as I wanted to see Keiji Haino, Current 93, Six Organs and richard Youngs. When "The Corwood Industries Representative" appeared my jaw hit the floor! Amazing, captivating gig - also worthy of a mention are the bassist (richard youngs) and drummer (alex nielson) who were utterly fantastic...

Jandek's music is purely a hobby for him. He mostly funds and records his music all by himself, due to the fact that his main job is as a stockbroker (Corwood Ind. shares a telephone number with Sterling Smith Corp., Smith's main source of income). So Jandek's music is purely for his own enjoyment. If anyone else likes it, that's pure chance as far as he's concerned.

i don't think its just as simple as enjoying something or not. eg learning the back story of an artist can be truly part of the parcel that helps you feel/love it, y know the myth of it. i think that some music needs an introduction to prepare you for whats to come. Also your comment didn't need to be so aggressive he was being quote "curious" Anyway i those classical ears, first listen told me that i'm not in the right frame of mood to hear this but that day might be... tomorrow?

I'd kind of doubt it. To be honest with you, I actually find Jandek pretty difficult to listen to, and my admiration of his work comes from some inner level that isn't really cognitive, but not really instinctual, either. I just kind of feel it, in some weird way. I don't know if that's how other people understand it, but that's how I do. I'd never really go out of my way to call Jandek "good", but there's something about him that's very appealing.

Reading through all of these comments, I'm wondering how exactly something being totally uppity, elitist, a big joke on listeners, poorly made, poorly performed, over hyped and drawn out is automatically bad. Note that I'm not saying any of that, other people have, and even if they're right, who cares, does something being extremely awful and pointless immediately devalue it as art?

and is there anything wrong with taking artistic value from something that has none on its own? Think about a car crash, do you think the person causing it did so to make an artistic statement? Probably not. It's probably ugly and noisey, but it can still seem beautiful to the right eyes

I dont know what it is about jandek, but it always makes sense to me. It did the first time I heard it. Usually when I hear music for the first time that is radically non-standard and discordant I can appreciate some aesthetic things about it or find it stimuating, but I don't have an experience right away where I can connect with it. That always takes time or doesn't happen at all. But hearing Jandek for the first time was like hearing a language I didn't know I would understand.
