@48candycane I have seen both, but this one is just so elegant and graceful. Loved the 2004 movie though. Butler has a decent voice and sings the songs pretty well, but not like this.
@Elizabeth111Music - The creation of the "Phantom of the Opera" musical was filled with backstage drama - some of which was the hiring/firing of various lyricists. As a result the lyrics were changed mutiple times. This video shows an older version of the lyrics (which I actually prefer).
@thespian302 - You're forgetting that - along with Stilgoe and Hart, Alan Jay Lerner also worked on the lyrics of the show - though nothing of his work remains (he only worked on it a short time) - so there were actually 3 lyrcists involved in the show - with Hart getting final credit for the completed work.
@lordbalfor there were only two lyric writers. the first, Richard Stilgob, had writers block and Andrew wasnt pleased with the results because they "werent properly reflecting his music". the secind was Charles Hart, an unknown that had introduced himself to Cameron Mackintosh at and art show or aome other event of that nature, Mackintosh recomended him to webber and the rest is history. there were 2 or 3 other firings that i know of, and alot of drama. so yeah, only 2 Lyricsists:)
@lordbalfor Ohh okay thanks for clearing that up. This was the first version that I heard, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere else. I like these lyrics a lot, maybe even more than the version that is in the musical now.
The only other Phantom I know who can compete with Michael Crawford is Hugh Panaro. But even Hugh Panaro doesn't have the charisma that Crawford has as the Phantom.
No matter how many times I hear someone sing the part of the Phantom I always compare them to Crawford....I don't think there will ever be anyone that puts as much feeling and soul into the character as he does...
Who would have thought in the 70s that Frank (ooh Betty) Spencer and a dancer out of the Hot Gossip sexy dance group would go on to take the lead parts in the most successful theatrical show ever.
The thing that people forget that the Phantom always plays for an audience....whether just in front of Christine or the Opera house....and always has such a stage presence that people are like DANG.
a quality some Phantom's (*cough Butler *cough) don't seem to show in their performances.
I saw the 25th anniversary version of this song and while I think they actors were ok, it seemed overdone compared to this one. This is just so awesome, Michael's got a fantastic voice
It's gentle and enchanting, but there's also something sinister underneath, "Helpless to resist the notes i write," "Music is deceiving," The lyrics really describe the effect music has on people, an incredible feeling that puts you in a trance. really beautiful!
For anyone who wonders why Michael Crawford is so revered as the Phantom, read the article on broadwayword web site dated Feb. 14. Should put the issue to rest once and for all.
@audiesgirl I don't see any article about Michael on that website......The only thing dated, I think, 2/14, is some kind of article talking about a "Most romantic Broadway song" where Michael lists the song he feels is the most romantic.
@bookworm7087 I misspelled the site, it's broadwayworld. If you search for Spotlight on Phantom at the bottom of that page are a number of interviews with the cast where you'll find MC's. I'd paste the link here but YT sends an error message. Let me know if this works.
@audiesgirl Hi Audiesgirl - Ok, after a lot of searching I found it. The intro is immediately wrong because Hal Prince didn't even consider Michael Crawford; it was ALW who knew he found the right man when he heard him sing. Thanks for the tip. The article doesn't really say anything new as it's really a rehash of interviews with Sierra, Michael and Hal. The Michael interview was fantastic. I will comment in a separate post about the article.
@bookworm7087 I can agree about Michael having an instant rapport with the audience because I witnessed it first hand recently in London in WOZ. I've heard from those who've seen him live in concert and in Phantom and other stage performances that he oozes charisma; I'd love to see him in concert. I'm not sure about having a rapport with his fellow actors - that's up in the air; he hasn't always gotten along with them.
@bookworm7087 Yes, I noticed the error re Hal Prince's role in casting the part. MC claims ALW first approached him during the intermission of Starlight Express. Perhaps ALW forgot when MC was doing Barnum? Regardless of who first had the idea of casting MC or when, we are so very grateful they didn't go ahead with Steve Harley which would have been a disaster. When you consider how Broadway shows are being "reinvented" by new producers, I pray this does not happen to POTO .
@bookworm7087 Plus, there was never any intention of trying to subvert comedy by casting against type. Andrew heard Michael sing and that was that as far as he was concerned. I think the author is misguided here. I'm always happy to read anything about Michael, though, so again - thanks for the tip!
@bookworm7087 If Steve Harley had remained, then the show would have been a rock opera and I can't imagine it like that. You're right- fortunately the show took ALW in a different direction than he'd originally intended. I don't think this show will ever be changed - as the creative team has consistently said, this was practically perfect from the first run through. Of course, there is little originality out there, hence the constant revivals, but POTO is perfect as is.
I remember this version. My mom used to put on this version of the song when I was a baby and use it as a lullaby. I didn't sleep a lot, so she sang to me a lot, and when she would get tired of singing, she would turn this on. I would usually go to sleep.
We're fortunate to have Hal Prince still in charge of quality control over all the POTO productions. I shudder to think of what someone else would do to "update" it and am concerned about the new Cameron McIntosh re-staging. I didn't care for the RAH show at all and won't buy the DVD. The singers were excellent but the rest failed to convey the magic of the stage show I love. I still have hope they will do a DVD of the original stage version; JOJ would be wonderful but anybody will do.
Seems like we should consider doing more for Broadway performers as far as recording them on video. I know they probably do it to encourage people to see it live, but it would be nice to have high quality videos to look back at famous performances such as this
I love how they recorded a production of Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury still in the cast
Plus, I loved how he sang in Hello Dolly even though his voice wasn't nearly as strong as it became. It Only Takes a Moment is one of my favorite songs that he sings - probably because whatever his voice was, he was singing with the same emotion that he always brings to a song.
@bookworm7087 Um, I never said you didn't. You were the one who said Michael has been overshadowed; I explained why. Either way, I don't know what you are arguing about. I never said that the other Phantoms weren't worthy. I don't even know who is arguing anyway - except the troll and for some reason you responded to him. Itt's kind of obvious that it's all subjective, but if we are all to keep our opinions to ourselves because it is subjective, there wouldn't be a need for comment boards.
For me, Michael has the most magnificent voice - no one else, in the bits that I've heard them, comes close. He did work hard to achieve the voice, but IMO he always had that ability. Hard work might make someone with mediocre ability solid or even good singer, but it's not going to make them great. As to him being overshadowed, most of that has to do with the fact that it's 25 years on -most people have never seen him in the role. To those lucky enough to have done so, he's unforgettable.
@bookworm7087 I did see in London in 1986.Argue all you like,as i said before this is subjctive, not everyone will agree with you.I also saw MC in Barnum. There are those who feel that Jim Dale did a better job in that one.
Owen Jones is a lot younger and so appeals to a younger audience. Gerard Butler who is a younger, sexier works for some for the same reason . I am sure there are people all over the world who feel that their own Phantom is the greatest.
@TickleMaTurkey I can't believe you are seriously telling me that Michael Crawford is rubbish and to watch JOHN GROBAN'S version?!! Are you serious or just taking the mickey?
Today the 10,000th POTO is performed at the Majestic Theater in NYC. Bravo everyone associated with this over the years and wish we could all be there for the after party. Can't wait to see the new staging and hope there's another national tour. ;)
I really like these lyrics in this version. I've heard them also in a Michael Crawford Barbra Streisand duet. He is an incredible phantom! but I think he could have done without the lipstick in this video. lol
Michael Crawford - by far not the BEST singer, but definitely the best, and I mean very best Phantom there was and possibly will be. So much passion and flowing beauty in every note and word he produces which I feel to come from the phantom.
@CheckersPerson I understand the enthusiasm for a particular artist,i do think though that MC has been overshadowed by other actors.John Owen Jones has drawn lots of fans to the London production. He too has shown great passion in his portrayal.Gina Beck is a wonderful Christine and i regret not seeing them together even though i was not that keen on the show. When all is said on done, this all subjective so argueing is pointless, they are actors and more than the some of their parts.
Phantom46, that's all the troll wants is attention - and he's loving it. The worst thing is to be ignored - if you're a troll - so that's the best thing for us to do.
It doesn't compute in my brain when I see a comment on how he isn't good or Gerard Butler. That is like saying you'd rather have broccoli over cake... It doesn't happen. (:
@lucky07621 I wish this was from a DVD, but this is a promo video from the original London production before it opened on the West End in 1986. many thosands of people are wanting the entire original production with Crawford, on DVD. It was recorded, but never released to the public. It's in NY for the current cast and researchers to view.
@thephantom1946 The show had already some months when this appeared, this one of three vids made to promote singles-yes it was the vinyl era.The first was "Phantom of the Opera" with Sarah and the Steve Harley who was the original choice to take the lead.ALW apparently heard Crawford sing as he a nd Sarah shared the same teacher. This the official version,Steve was paid off and the rest is history.Sarah also recorded "All i ask of you" with Cliff Richard. He was never an option.
Why do so many keep feeding the troll?? Trolls comments are always nonsensical, and have no basis in fact. They live to to stir up and bait people. Pay no attention, and let them alone in their stupidity.
@thephantom1946 No basis in fact? As regards MC the only ones who are deluded and whoes comments "Have no basis in FACT" are the ones who consider MC a GREAT singer. The facts r b4 u. but u ignore them, This video is the evidence that MC is a mediocre at best singer ... and thats a fact not a delusion. U can hear it see it and feel it in real time but u wont accept it. If thats not a delusion or some sort of mass hysteria then I'm a Chinaman
@TickleMaTurkey This was work in progress,i think this was recorded prior to the show opening with a view to releasing the song as a single.ALW does this with his shows, he often has a slightly different arrangement or tempo for the songs.
I saw MC sing this live and he was fine.He worked hard to get to the point where he could sing this role.To hear the before voice, check out the soundtrack of Hello,Dollyeveryone. He was Cornelius Hackl.Quite reedy and light.
I'm starting to think TickleMaTurkey must be Gerard Butler's agent or relative. I can't imagine another reason for the persistently stupid comments. Stop feeding his/her rage by ignoring them starting now.
@audiesgirl There is a flip side 2 u r post of course I cant imagine the reasons for the persistently stupid comments claiming that MC is a great singer. It boggles the mind that one does
@NearSupporter11226 Oh no I appreciate the compliment, I really do. A compliment from a woman is harder to come by than ....... a really decent phantom!
@NearSupporter11226 Ahhh! Logic. if that twer only the answer fair maiden from the colonies I have tried logic but that does not work on the illogical. All the MC supporters are listening to the genius of the Maaaayyyyooooosic and not to MC I have said it b4 that MC sounds like he is doingan impression of a singer. Impressionists copy Frank Sinatra, They sound just like him and in tune but when you really listen 2 them they aint Frank AND they aint singers
@TickleMaTurkey - Only if you think Miss Piggy is HOT!. Brightman was GORGEOUS - and got even BETTER looking as she got older. Folks should know that Brightman was Webber's muse - in effect he wrote "Phantom" FOR her. Clearly she was a great inspiration for him (and I can EASILY understand why).
@Ms18girly - The lyrics went through several changes over the course of the development of the show. I'm guessing this is a relatively early music video so the lyrics are not those in the final "product".
I live in a very big city, & the performing hgih school (the 2nd best in either onatrio or canada, i don't remember) is putting this on. They have been working on it for about a year, and they go sometimes until midnight with practices. So, to anyone who has seen this play, is it good?
@UnicornnxD - Phantom is a fabulous show. I believe it holds the title as the longest-running Broadway show in history. There's a reason for that - it's a masterpiece. It's by far Andrew Lloyd Webbers best creation - and considering he's the creator of "Cats", "Jesus Christ Superstar" and many other hugely successful shows, that's saying a LOT.
As the Wizard says, pay no attention to the troll behind the curtain. Most of them don't believe or care what they are saying - they just enjoy baiting people.
@bookworm7087 Thats the point bait ...... you have to have some bait or there is nothing. The bait is Michael Crawford is just a below average singer ... and thats a fact.
Trolls love to start these debates, and that's what is going on here. That's how they get their jollies. They are to be dismissed, pay no attention. You can always tell; their arguments have no merit whatsoever.
Ok, so you don't like Michael Crawford - that's fine. If you find him funny when singing, that's fine, too........Audiesgirl, I wouldn't even bother. He's either a troll, in which case he's not worth the trouble, or he really dislikes Michael, in which case he's not interested in what you're saying (or he's both). Michael is supremely talented and he's beloved; that's just how it is.
@bookworm7087@bookworm7087 As a comedy actor he fine but the trouble is singing isn't supposed to be funny "The Maaaaayoooosaaaac of the Naaaaaarrrrrrgjtttt!" Give me a break!
I do agree that he is a remarkable overall entertainer (I think he'd love being compared to Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly because the former was his idol and the latter his mentor). He is revered by the other Phantoms, though I did not notice their reaction when Michael walked on stage. The 25th finale ended up being a wonderful tribute to the man who brought the Phantom alive (between the audience showering him with love and Ramin's own tribute).
See that's what I don't get. I don't care about technical merit or putting Michael or any other singer under a microscope like that. I think he's a great singer because he has a phenomenal voice and sings with great emotion. While I don't doubt that he has charisma in spades (per anyone who has seen him live), I just don't think that is sufficient to explain his hold over people. I think the reason why people love him as a singer is this combo of voice and emotion - it's very special.
No one else on the planet does this like Michael Crawford .............. thank christ!! He murdered it! The Maaaaayoooooooooosic of the Naaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrght!!!!!!!!
@TickleMaTurkey He did not "murder" it, he CREATED it. He was and is the model of the perfect way to sing this song. Show some fucking respect and gratitude to this incredible man, please. Thank you.
@NearSupporter11226 Absolutely. The only thing that is incredible is the music. Micheal Crawford IS NOT a great or incredible singer. He never gets invited to perform (other than poto events) with other singers great or or mediocre because they know he's rubbish but can't say it. Theres a bit of the "Three brass monkeys" going on with Michael Crawford. Cant see it, cant speak it and certainly most of you cant hear it
@TickleMaTurkey - Well, Crawford was never known for having a great voice, In fact, in his earlier films such as "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" his voice was extremely weak - but he CERTAINLY delivered in Phantom with a POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL performance. He made that role his OWN and will always be remembered as the BEST Phantom of any production EVER done of this show... and that's a FACT.
@lordbalfor A fact? Only in a dream. In the future musical historians will look back and say "Peruvian marching power must have been pretty strong shit in those days" and thats another fact!
@TickleMaTurkey That's great for you, honey, but if I have to be deluded to enjoy his performance then deluded I shall be. Now, off with you, you silly troll. :) You amuse me.
@NearSupporter11226 To make a women smile is worth all the treasure in the world ... but unfortunately not worth listening to MC without ear protectors. My cat has not been seen for 5 days ever since I accidently let this video run while it was in the room ...whoooooosh out the door up the road over the hill and far far away .........
@TickleMaTurkey - 2.2 MILLION views. It seems people LIKE this. I think your cat is actually telling you need to shower more often - either that or change your socks. LOL
@lordbalfor 2.2 million views? yeah u know why .. its part of the torture process being used by the Anti Gaddafi fighters in control of libya. If the beatings, electrcs shocks and drugs dont work they use this as the final solution. My socks? if you had seen the sheer terror on the face of that poor defenceless creature b4 it ran for its life you would know its not my socks. Cats can hear things that SOME humans cant hear
@TickleMaTurkey The original director Harold Prince wanted this to be played in the style of high Victorian melodrama which you neither understand nor appreciate. Watch the Making of POTO program if you care to catch up or remain blissfully ignorant.Every production follows this model although each Phantom brings his own style and all are wonderful in their own way with one glaring exception whose name I shall not repeat.
@audiesgirl I might not know about High Victorian Melodrama but I do know two things firstly my hearing is not impaired and secondly I'm not deluded. Nothing of what you say supports Michael Crawford as a great singer. When some really great singers OR not so great singers start regularly (not poto) inviting him to perform with them then I shall yield to the rubbish written in some of these comments
@WiganWorldNews I agree that in the strictest technical sense, Crawford is not a great singer. He is, however, a great entertainer in the tradition of Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly. He doesn't need anybody to invite him to sing; he packs the house all by himself unlike those who can't mesmerize an audience solo. The charisma factor is what separates the great from just good. At the RAH celebration, the latter POTOs were blown away when he walked on stage and Karimloo bowed in tribute. Beat that.!
@WiganWorldNews So now you claim to read hearts and minds, too. When you can't support your position by facts, you resort to speculation. Politics is a factor in any profession but in performing arts you have to sell tickets; ultimately the audience is the judge of talent. You can't dismiss Crawford's incredible track record spanning sixty years in the business but I'm guessing next you'll say his OBE/Tony/Olivier awards were unmerited, too.
@WiganWorldNews I think you're making the easy mistake of thinking that your opinion has the power to change someone's musical taste. If you are not able to appreciate Crawford's singing - then frankly, that's your loss.
No one does this like Michael and no one ever will. His voice is so gorgeous and compelling and he brings such genuine emotion to the role, emotion which comes very easily for him and which does not come easily to others (overwrought is a word that comes to mind). Perhaps it's because he identifies so easily with the character. Michael makes the darkness a beautiful and tangible thing - his voice practically drapes the song in velvet.
POTO premiered on Broadway 24 years ago tonight. I'll bet the show with Hugh Panaro will celebrate this amazing milestone. Imagine what it must be like to work at the Majestic Theater and get to see this over and over. Some might think it's too much of a good thing but I'd give it a try. Happy 24th Phantom!
I really like these lyrics far better than the current ones... not to say I don't like the current ones. I just love how this focuses more on "Close your eyes."
Audiesgirl, that's an interesting idea.. Phantom 25 in the theatres was terrific - it's not the same as seeing the show live, but it's the next best thing. Still, it would hurt Broadway and West End sales probably and I wouldn't want to see that.
continued: He did change their view, but just today I read an article in the Sun referring to him as the star of SM. Now I absolutely adore that show, but referring to Michael as the star of SM instead of Phantom or at least both SM and Phantom is always jarring to me. I know their audience is the British public, but it makes him sound like he's done nothing since - or that it's the only thing he's known for. It's hardly a big deal, but I always notice it when it happens.
In a very recent BBC interview, Michael said that he had no idea people were so shocked that he'd been cast as Phantom and that he was glad, lol, because he went into the role with his whole heart. I think he was implying that had he known, it might have put an awful lot of pressure on him to go out and prove himself instead of just performing.
@bookworm7087 Michael was fabulous as the Phantom.... you know who else was freaking excellent - a bit unexpectedly? Guillaume... I'm not being racist, I'm being serious... I didn't expect them to cast a black phantom, but if you have read the book he is SUPPOSED to be a "dark complected" figure both in theory and reality..... so i think Guillaume was phenomenal.
London and Broadway theater have a small percentage of people who are able to go and enjoy it due to distance and cost. There are many well known theater actors who are not known at all outside that medium, but are very famous to theater goers. The British public was completey surprised that Michael was chosen as the Phantom, having only known him from his wildly popular TV series as the hapless, bumbling, accident prone Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. He sure changed their view.
@thephantom1946 With ticket prices soaring into 3 digits, it's matter of time before live theater wakes up to economic reality and makes their work more accessible. The Met Opera, for example, is doing live broadcasts to local theaters; they should do pay-per-view, too.If the 25th POTO DVD does well, maybe they'll do one of the stage show. The revamped POTO production may make it easier to revive a road tour, too. I'm waiting.
Sexiness is in the eye of the beholder. Michael made women swoon, and I guess still does, because he wears his heart on his sleeve, unlike most men. Plus, as Phantom, he moved with such incredible grace. He's also incredibly funny, which I think is sexy, and a brilliant storyteller. Actually, talent is sexy, and few are as talented as Michael. His astonishing, emotional voice is what drew me to him before I'd seen him act in anything. Looks don't have a heck of a lot to do with it.
I think it's because television is a lot more pervasive than any other medium. It's expensive to go to the theatre and most Brits don't live in London.
Did you guys know that Andrew Lloyd Webber was dating Sarah Brightman at the time he wrote this musical, and that this musical was his gift to her?
Now I don't know a whole lot about gifts, but I couldn't possibly imagine a better gesture to convey emotion to the one you love than this. It's perfect.
@Spudfish93 I think they married pre-POTO and their later divorce ended plans to cast Sarah and Crawford in the movie. I can't say for sure, but I've heard their contracts gave them rights for some number of years to do the film so ALW had to wait for them to expire rather than let Sarah do the part, screwing Crawford in the process. What might have been.
This video reeks of the late Ken Russell, especially the scene where MC is against tthe gate. This is intended for family viewing,if it was'nt Ken would have had him tied to the gate wearing nothing but garlands on his head,God bless you Ken.
I love this. In my opinion, I think that Crawford is the best Phantom so far and that this is the best song in the musical. Even the 2004 movie was good, I noticed this song's lyrics were changed slightly. Why? Gerard Butler was an ok Phantom, but he isn't the best at singing.
Everyone in the genre sings this song, but no one can beat Crawford. His stage presence and movement are simply magnificent. He will always be THE phantom.
@ocrerose This is all fake darling, none of these characters are real. There are other shows and why not treat yourself to the real thing, get a ticket for the Met,ROH, wherever and see a full opera.La Traviata,Carmen,Faust,Lucia di Lammermore will make this look pale in comparison.
@TZEITEL10 obviously I know that. I've seen full operas and ballets. I'm guessing your one of those conservative opera fans that look down on the rest of theatre?
any one who says they do not like this have to be tone deaf

When you consider how Broadway shows are being "reinvented" by new producers, I pray this does not happen to POTO .
audiesgirl 1 week ago
@bookworm7087 Plus, there was never any intention of trying to subvert comedy by casting against type. Andrew heard Michael sing and that was that as far as he was concerned. I think the author is misguided here. I'm always happy to read anything about Michael, though, so again - thanks for the tip!
bookworm7087 1 week ago
@bookworm7087 If Steve Harley had remained, then the show would have been a rock opera and I can't imagine it like that. You're right- fortunately the show took ALW in a different direction than he'd originally intended. I don't think this show will ever be changed - as the creative team has consistently said, this was practically perfect from the first run through. Of course, there is little originality out there, hence the constant revivals, but POTO is perfect as is.
bookworm7087 1 week ago

It Only Takes a Moment is one of my favorite songs that he sings - probably because whatever his voice was, he was singing with the same emotion that he always brings to a song.
bookworm7087 1 week ago
@bookworm7087 Um, I never said you didn't. You were the one who said Michael has been overshadowed; I explained why. Either way, I don't know what you are arguing about. I never said that the other Phantoms weren't worthy. I don't even know who is arguing anyway - except the troll and for some reason you responded to him. Itt's kind of obvious that it's all subjective, but if we are all to keep our opinions to ourselves because it is subjective, there wouldn't be a need for comment boards.
bookworm7087 1 week ago
For me, Michael has the most magnificent voice - no one else, in the bits that I've heard them, comes close. He did work hard to achieve the voice, but IMO he always had that ability. Hard work might make someone with mediocre ability solid or even good singer, but it's not going to make them great. As to him being overshadowed, most of that has to do with the fact that it's 25 years on -most people have never seen him in the role. To those lucky enough to have done so, he's unforgettable.
bookworm7087 1 week ago 3
@bookworm7087 I did see in London in 1986.Argue all you like,as i said before this is subjctive, not everyone will agree with you.I also saw MC in Barnum. There are those who feel that Jim Dale did a better job in that one.
Owen Jones is a lot younger and so appeals to a younger audience. Gerard Butler who is a younger, sexier works for some for the same reason . I am sure there are people all over the world who feel that their own Phantom is the greatest.

UnicornnxD 3 weeks ago
@UnicornnxD - Phantom is a fabulous show. I believe it holds the title as the longest-running Broadway show in history. There's a reason for that - it's a masterpiece. It's by far Andrew Lloyd Webbers best creation - and considering he's the creator of "Cats", "Jesus Christ Superstar" and many other hugely successful shows, that's saying a LOT.

WiganWorldNews 3 weeks ago
I do agree that he is a remarkable overall entertainer (I think he'd love being compared to Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly because the former was his idol and the latter his mentor). He is revered by the other Phantoms, though I did not notice their reaction when Michael walked on stage. The 25th finale ended up being a wonderful tribute to the man who brought the Phantom alive (between the audience showering him with love and Ramin's own tribute).
bookworm7087 3 weeks ago 2
See that's what I don't get. I don't care about technical merit or putting Michael or any other singer under a microscope like that. I think he's a great singer because he has a phenomenal voice and sings with great emotion. While I don't doubt that he has charisma in spades (per anyone who has seen him live), I just don't think that is sufficient to explain his hold over people. I think the reason why people love him as a singer is this combo of voice and emotion - it's very special.

@TickleMaTurkey The original director Harold Prince wanted this to be played in the style of high Victorian melodrama which you neither understand nor appreciate. Watch the Making of POTO program if you care to catch up or remain blissfully ignorant.Every production follows this model although each Phantom brings his own style and all are wonderful in their own way with one glaring exception whose name I shall not repeat.
audiesgirl 3 weeks ago
@audiesgirl I might not know about High Victorian Melodrama but I do know two things firstly my hearing is not impaired and secondly I'm not deluded. Nothing of what you say supports Michael Crawford as a great singer. When some really great singers OR not so great singers start regularly (not poto) inviting him to perform with them then I shall yield to the rubbish written in some of these comments
WiganWorldNews 3 weeks ago
@WiganWorldNews I agree that in the strictest technical sense, Crawford is not a great singer. He is, however, a great entertainer in the tradition of Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly. He doesn't need anybody to invite him to sing; he packs the house all by himself unlike those who can't mesmerize an audience solo. The charisma factor is what separates the great from just good. At the RAH celebration, the latter POTOs were blown away when he walked on stage and Karimloo bowed in tribute. Beat that.!
audiesgirl 3 weeks ago
@audiesgirl What do you expect them to do if they want to work again? This is showbiz.
WiganWorldNews 3 weeks ago
@WiganWorldNews So now you claim to read hearts and minds, too. When you can't support your position by facts, you resort to speculation. Politics is a factor in any profession but in performing arts you have to sell tickets; ultimately the audience is the judge of talent. You can't dismiss Crawford's incredible track record spanning sixty years in the business but I'm guessing next you'll say his OBE/Tony/Olivier awards were unmerited, too.
audiesgirl 3 weeks ago
@WiganWorldNews I think you're making the easy mistake of thinking that your opinion has the power to change someone's musical taste. If you are not able to appreciate Crawford's singing - then frankly, that's your loss.

No one does this like Michael and no one ever will. His voice is so gorgeous and compelling and he brings such genuine emotion to the role, emotion which comes very easily for him and which does not come easily to others (overwrought is a word that comes to mind). Perhaps it's because he identifies so easily with the character. Michael makes the darkness a beautiful and tangible thing - his voice practically drapes the song in velvet.

continued: He did change their view, but just today I read an article in the Sun referring to him as the star of SM. Now I absolutely adore that show, but referring to Michael as the star of SM instead of Phantom or at least both SM and Phantom is always jarring to me. I know their audience is the British public, but it makes him sound like he's done nothing since - or that it's the only thing he's known for. It's hardly a big deal, but I always notice it when it happens.
bookworm7087 1 month ago

He sure changed their view.
thephantom1946 1 month ago

@Spudfish93 I think they married pre-POTO and their later divorce ended plans to cast Sarah and Crawford in the movie.
