Great video, but cant remember swapping discs in Tex Murphy being that bad, no worse then any of the other FMV games I played. You can now buy the Tex Murphy games for the GOG website for only 10 buck each., No more disc swapping.
Spoony I'm not letting you get away with telling people that The Journeyman Project is mediocre. Have you even played it?! The sequel is one of my favorite games, because not only is it a lot of fun and has a really fascinating backstory but you learn a lot about history by going to different time periods. The hammy acting was just something you expected.. It came with the territory. I recommend any history buff and/or adventure gamer to check out the Journeyman trilogy!
Oh wow, my first pc was a windows 3.1, we could just about get lemmings, some educational word game about slime and the most brilliant game of all, 3d battle-chess, working on it.
Oh I also forgot, my uncle somehow managed to get dungeon keeper 95, I think, onto a bunch of floppy disks and get it to run, albeit without sound or the isometric visuals, plus it basically ran like a treacle sloth, stuck in a line at Tesco's that is being sprayed with super glue.
Looking back on FMV games I now view them more as novelty than anything. They were a part of the evolution of games and have their place in history. Who knows? They may be highly collectible and valuable in the next 20 years or so.
@Echosofthemind I thought you were comparing personalities. my bad. in my opinion, Luigi is far more likeable and enjoyable to watch that this stupid fuck.
Yaaah CD technology we can make kick ass FMV games
20 years later: well we got half of that right, they had FMV and they were games, somewhat, but next time maybe when we promise to have an actor from a big name movie we better make sure said actor wasn't a body double or stuntman
Too young (I was alive though) to remember their hey day, but I do remember playing an arcade FMV(The Aerosmith one) at a local resturuant quite often, good memories despite the fact I didn't like the game.
Actually thats not true. 650Mb and 700Mb CD's have exactly the same compression. 700Mb CD's simply take advantage of area at the edge of the disk that was reserved as being run off area(no data because getting too close to the edge of the disk). 700Mb simply take advantage of this "free space" As long as a CD-ROMs laser could track all the way to the edge of the disk you could take advantage of this extra area and read 700Mb CD's
One thing not mentioned about "Critical path"...if you die, you have to sit through FMV stuff again...they make it hard to just "try again" You will die 20+ times on the first puzzle, too!
I still like his comment about how it's an era of gaming being forgotten.
Anyone born after 1993 probably hasn't even heard of these types of games, and everyone else is just forgetting them and can't get them working usually
Being forgotten not just since they are nearly impossible to get working, but are almost entirely pointless compared to just playing todays games
I'll say it: Making FMV games nowadays the way they did then would be cheap as can be, and everyone would buy it. SOMEONE GET TO WORK!!!

It seems the FMV era was a transition to incorporating smooth character motion into video games. Kinda like a bit of video game puberty.
