I've reviewed a lot of red card offences on youtube and most of them have been spot on. However I think this one was a little harsh, I think a yellow would have been correct. Although to be fair it wasn't an easy call

The italian player looks to be 'lifted' by rolling over the other french player. However it is a requirement that the tackling player ensures the person he tackles gets to the ground safely, that does not appear to be done in any way. If anything driving force was applied downwards on a player turned past horizontal, which is a cause for a red card. I would not say that this is a textbook red, but other players being involved does not remove Bastareaud's responsabilities.

That Fijian touch-judge made a shocker, clearly not a spear. And if I recall correctly, it's not the first poor call he's made, I seem to recall a couple of missed calls or wrong calls from him in the last couple of years (although I can't remember specifics - anyone want to help me out?)

In rugby it is the tackling player's Duty to make sure the player lands safely. Bastareaud failed there so a penalty at least. I think the Bastareaud drove the tackled player downwards after the acidental collision with the other play turned him over. If such a downward push was applied then a red card is fully justified, the danger of such a move warrants it.
