  • those who are about to die salute you...

  • the music sucks camel dick

  • That entertaiment destroyed ancient Rome. Romans were busy watching gladiators and chariots races (" everything that people need is bread and circus") and forgot about having children. Stantard of life in Rome was miles away from "barbarians" around. Because of low fertility rate Romans had to use diplomacy-"divide et empera" to play barbarians against each other. Finally Roman Army was short of Romans and filled up with barbarians that hated their Roman commanders. Empire felt apart from inside

  • why is there a whistle to begin the fight ??? haha

  • Woody Strode: The Original Avatar. Badass dude.

  • doctores father?

  • Love Kirk Douglas!

  • is that a shield?

  • @chriiz303 - looks like a buckler not a shield.

  • Woody Strode wins. Catch him in "Sgt. Rutledge" where he gets a lot of lines.

  • A great film.

  • I hope they paid them extra for wearing those outfits

  • made in a time without computer animation. and i would say, much better!!

  • that roman guy is so sad.

  • Gotta love those pants...

  • Spartacus would have been much more armour in real life. He was a Thracian or Thraex so he would have had a big rectangular sheild and a helmet. Also he would not have used a Gladius sword he would have used a sica which was a curved sword that originated from Thrace and Dacia.

  • @JRAV03DJE i doubt they get to choose their own weaponry....

  • @vxAlanxv I never said they did you idiot!

Depending on what nation the gladiator was from and his size and strength depended on what weapons and armour he would wear and train in as the Ludus (Gladiator training school) would decide that for them. Spartacus was defently a Thraex so he would have been wearing more armour and using sica not a a small shield and a Gladius as shown in this film. Learn to read peoples comments properly before you try and act smarter.

  • @JRAV03DJE actually ur the one trying to act smarter u retard. and no their nation wouldnt matter. so being a thracian wouldnt make a difference. It would be decided by merit in previous matches.

  • @vxAlanxv Yet again you don't seem to be able to read my comments properly. I didn't say they were giving certain amour and weapons just based on there nation! There size strength and the Ludus trainers would decide that for them as I said in my previous comment! They did get non Thracians to be Thraex's also but chances are if you were a Thracian you would be a Thraex. Oh and I find it really funny how your calling me a retard when you can't even spell properly.

  • @JRAV03DJE what am i spelling wrong? and if its wrong irts probably because im shortening words purposely. and i didnt say u said tehy were given certain armour jussst based on their nation, but u did say that. no their size and strength wouldnt matter either. if they were good

  • @vxAlanxv If you cannot see what's wrong with your spelling then you really are stupid. Second of all size and strength would have had a huge difference in what style they fought in. For instance a Murmilo would have been someone of good size and strength to carry the armour and deliver the power required. Where as a retiarius (Net man) would have been a smaller lighter person to have the necessary speed.

  • @JRAV03DJE i already said its not mis spelling, im doing it purposely or can u not read? i dont think their size of nationality would matter. theyd get better weaponry based on merit?

  • @vxAlanxv There size, strength and nation did matter when the slaves were picked by Ludus owners. Yes of course how well they did in their training mattered but to be a candidate for a gladiator those things listed would be important.

  • @JRAV03DJE how?

  • Nothing's changed. The middle class toil while the top 2% laugh at our expense. Fine sport.

  • That Shield MUST have come as a gift with a McHappy Meal?

  • the shield couldn't cover his pacakge!

  • simply a magnificent sequence.

  • It's possible that in some combats like this, they did have such small shields. Generally the lightly armored net mans tactic was to evade his opponent and wait for his more heavily armored opponent to tire under the weight of his equipment. If the opponent was carrying a smaller lighter shield, then there was less chance of him getting tired out over a longer combat.

  • K U B R I C K ! !

  • much better than "Gladtiator"!

  • Spartacus

  • haha even russel crowe is laughing at this guy

    0:48 oh the drama....

  • Thats his shield?! I thought it was one of his rings

  • Are you not entertained?

  • its hes Figthing Syle

  • hobbit shield :))

  • At the 1:21 mark the trident slashes at Spartacus' (Kirk Douglas) chest and leaves a trail of blood. It takes only half a second but looks very real. I remember reading that the the scene was very dangerous to shoot, but am not sure whether real blood was actually shed. Anybody knows anything?

  • @serrc1 They have all kinds of special effects tricks exploding blood capsules they dont use real ammo in gun fights they have charges that go poof from electric impulses on the wall when jack palances arm was run over by a tank in attack he pumped blood out with a squeeze ball for blood pressure checks dont ask my how they chopped the guys cock off in make them die slowly.

  • This is the worst fight scene i ever saw in my life. (-_-) I mean come on people those guys look so ******* gay while "fighting". In spartacus blood and sand or in Gladiator they will show you how to act in a fight. Think of dead and destruction only.

  • @MrFuego0011 You haven't seen many movies to think that's the worst fight scene ever. For its day, it is a hell of a fight seen. But you can't compare this to Modern Movies such as Gladiator or the 300 , today they have weapons masters and martial arts instructors that train you for months for a scene. Nonexistent, in those days where stuntmen or doubles did the action scenes. I agreed with the historic accuracy noted by deusirae76. Kirk or Woody in their 60s could kick your ass.

  • @TheHoomaikai Yeah I agree with TheHoomaikai. This fight looks fairly realistic. This is probably what it was really like in the arena...and not the choreographed computer generated blood fest that you see in more modern films.

  • @JollyRodders like Gladtiator?

  • I don't know why I don't get excited watching this, they look very stiff

  • i watch this at my school

  • Despite being older than Gladiator, this movie is more acurate. Spartacus and Draba are respectively thracian and retiarus, the lightest gladiator types. I think the production chose them cuz there's no dramatic effect with heavy armors and helmets on their face.

In Gladiator there are just fanciful armors and no recognizable gladiator types.

  • @deusirae76 Lol actually this movie isnt accurate becuase the retiarus didnt come around for centuries after the time the movie is set.

  • @UphyXx I just said it's MORE accurate than Gladiator ...

  • Yea but thats a pretty big dude and I just think offensively and defenceivly would give you a better chance because that that sword was worst than the shield. He wa screwed goin in !! LOL

  • five quid on woody strode to win.

    any takers?

  • I meant to say no offense

  • Whats the point in such a small shield? I guess something beats nothing. Maybe they were just cheating by giving him a midgets shield. LOL { offense to small people }.

  • @caddy1010 it's a shield using for parrying, best one for duels. large shields are good against infantry formation but not nimble in one-on-one.

  • Our gladiators get acl tears and once in a while they are paralysed by cervical breaks.

  • the twin of the roman empire is USA,today!!! hahahaha

  • the stupidiest thing someone could EVER say

  • Always wondered which I'd rather have, the shield and sword or the net and trident if I had to fight in that situation.

  • It`s impossible to say just like that, because it depends upon that which weapon you would be more skillful with. Unless if you have practiced both, of course. And I guess that skill with a certain weapon also depends on the construction of your body, condition of muscles, etc.

  • That's gotta be the dinkiest shield in the history of gladiator combat.

  • @dapoetmaster It's called a buckler

  • @dapoetmaster That's because its a buckler, not a shield. And it was meant to be worn on the wrist of a persons sword arm.

  • Must have been hard times. I guess America parallels Rome in many ways, militarism, spreading, occupations. I wonder how Romans could stand seeing people butchered. Today its on TV.

  • pure Kubrick

transition between the kneestrike/fall is cut just perfectly

    talent...

  • The music from 2:10 on isnt on the soundtrack lp so thats a good bonus.

  • Draba seems to have the advantage in weaponry, reach is always a big plus.

  • Draba's the Retarius Gladiator-the type with the net and trident to capture and "stab"-usually his type would be pitted against the Murmillio Gladiators, but it seems Spartacus is a Thracian. I bet Draba would have met a harder challenge if Spartacus was dressed as a Hoplomachus or Secutor as they were more heavily armored! Oh well good fight.

  • A great fight scene and I feel more realistic than those from "Gladiator".

  • Yeah, fights in today´s films don´t resist a second view

  • @Butchuk2007 you're drunk

  • Should be included the scene prior to this fight (the "face to face" between these two wrestlers hoping's turn to fight among themselves, while another couple fighting in the arena before them) . That previous scene is one of best of the movie.

  • Love the music in this scene and of course the direction--and the sequence where the Roman are hardly paying attention
