  • Where did yall get the traditional 9 foot staffs?

  • I only know where you can get them in Los Angeles, California, USA, or Vancouver BC, Canada.

You can also try Chinese book stores. Usually even if they do not carry it there, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

The material for the spear used in these videos is literally translated as "white wax stick"

    Good luck.

  • @Rainfire11559 I got mine from Kuenway in Vancouver.

  • nice, keep posting. any videos of empty hand sparring?

  • btw,the protective gears are awesome, where can i buy them??

  • The protective gears are custom made and commissioned by Shifu Bill Hsi. The helmet is just a simple cheap motorcycle helmet bought in Taiwan.

  • pretty good skill, but the spear looks a bit light

    how much does it weight??

  • The spear is about 10 to 12 feet in length and weights about 4-5 lbs. The weight combined with the length of the spear is what make it heavy.

  • Thank you for telling me.

According to 手臂錄, your spear is just right in length for a standard "short spear"...but not heavy enough.

I think you'll need a heavier one as your strength grows.

  • Yes, you are correct. These are lighter and shorter in comparison to what we use to practice.

To practice using light spears is doing a disfavor to yourself. One needs to train to use the right muscles of the back, and not the arms. And any training that involves weapons, muscle memory is easier to achieve if utilizing heavier weapons.

    Thank you for your clarification.

  • Ok sorry for the comment! I withdrawl.

But my comment on big spear will stay...cos lot of people dunno why they practice big spear.

when you visit the rural area in china you dun see ppls sparring big spear, practice yes, not in the past...now i dunno ..wushu has become to commercialise.

Oh...we refer to martial art practicioner.

I was taught the big spear for other purposes....but definitely not for sparring with such a big spear.

    Is your trainng in USA?

  • Read 手臂錄 by 吳役

You keep mentioning how a lot of people do not know why they practice giant spears. I would like to know your side of the explanation

In all fairness, I do not care what one person's recount of what people of China do or do not do. China is a huge place. There are MANY Chinese. To say that Chinese do or do not do whatever is a demonstration of ignorance. Not ALL Chinese practice the same

If you read the description of this video, you will know where this video is taken

  • since you have read this book, the reason for practicing big spear is in it!

We are not going for war...are not we?

My comment is on present practioners...yes the big spears were used in the early war time, everywhere in fact.

  • Chinese starter with the Ge (戈)...and every weapon starts to evolves from there and the way they were fought detemines the design of the weapon. that's why 18 weapon there is no 定数。

Sorry to make this comment ..becos everytime i saw ppls sparring with big spears I cannot see the true application being applied by the practioner.I am not challenging you, just like to know ...how good is your 栏 枪?

you are doing the big circle or small?

    thanks

  • Weapon evolution is usually determined by the evolution of armor that it has to penetrate to do damage. Afterall, a weapon that cannot pass a defense is useless. Therefore, to think that weapons evolve in a linear or branch fashion with a common origin is not correct.

Sorry, I do not know what 欄槍 is. If you are talking about 分 合, then you can see in 3rd video that I have, at 0:05, I did a 分. It sent the attacker's spear off to the side while I maintained center.

  • If you mean by small or big, there is only small. The smaller the better. That's basic universal martial arts concept.

Big circle is only achievable with arm or hip/waist movements. When we train spear, we attempt to use only the back and not the arm or body. It is to train OPEN and CLOSE of the body, not the circular motion of the arms and waist/hip.

Therefore, it is always small, and never big.

  • useless....! can't even withstand a hit on the shin ...how has your master taught you...i really dun understand.

BTW...do you know why we trained on big spear!

and have you seen ppls fighting with such bid spear or walk around with such big spear.

    think!

  • First, the spear never hit my shin. My armor fell out of place. Watch again.

Second, I don't know who you are refering when you suggest "we." Since I do not know who you are.

Third, you are right, I don't see anyone fighting or walking around with such big spear. In fact, I don't see anyone walk around with ANY weapons other than policeman.

Maybe you should do more thinking.
