AMAZING MY FRIEND!!...A HARD WORK YOU´VE MADE. WHAT ´VE YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE SUBSTITUTION CHORS..ARE THERE CHROMATIC IN ALL CASES???..THANK´S FOR SHEARIN´THIS
@dustypickups Thank you, you are very kind. Jazz is a massive, massive subject; I only wish some day I will be able to give it at least a fraction of the attention it deserves.
Ha ha!! That is so rad!!! Brilliant! I've loved KK's solo since the double album first came out (I think I was 16). I think a couple of people have already mentioned it, but I've listened to that solo so many times over the last 20 years or so that I know every part of it. The fact that you can actually play it must be a kick. Total payoff for all the work that must have gone into learning it. Again: well done.
@kls2157 Thank you. The real kick was each weekend when I would tackle the next couple of bars thinking 'I wonder what will be in this bit?'. It was a shame when there was no more left to figure out. I know I could do the same with another piece but I never have done because I haven't been listening to any other piece over and over for 20 years without knowing what was in it.
Paul, this is my all time favourite pop piano solo. I've heard it a million times, can dream every bit of it. You did an AMAZING job to emulate the solo. hands UP!
@toniohhs Thank you. I did put ten times as much effort into figuring out and polishing up this solo than any other on this channel. Glad you like it.
@maestropires I didn't make a midi file - and a tutorial of the whole thing would be quite a project. What I can do is start making tutorials of small sections and see how that goes.
@paulwwells - WOW! a long-time Sting fan salutes you. I recognize the whole solo which means you are right on the money. Excellent! How about the (similar) solo from "Never Coming Home"?
what album was original solo on, I have the Dream of the Blue Turtles CD, That was recorded around the same time as the Bring On the Night DVD in Paris in the French Chateau,.. which was KIrkland's Marsalis, fist disc with Sting, or I am wrong. Would love original CD, please help. Great Job!,
@padsax1 I thought it was a double CD of the Dream of the Blue Turtles album, because the opening song was bring on the night and dream of the blue turtles was near the end of CD2. Sorry I cannot be any more exact, but it was a long time ago.
@padsax1 It's on Bring on the Night - a double live CD of the Sting's presentation at Paris, with the Dream of The Blue Turtles band. It was the begining of his solo project. Simply amazing.
oh wow incredible playing............i saw them live in 1985? i think in Melbourne, great job Paul what an effort i wont ask how long it took to work that out but please tell do you have a midi file ? ;];];]; and if so can i have a copy?
oh wow incredible playing............i saw them live in 1985? i think in Melbourne, great job Paul what an effort i wont ask how long it took to work that out but please tell do you have a midi file ? ;];];]; and if so can i have a copy?
@EclecticSongwriter I like to think Kenny would be pleased to see how much his music is still admired in 2010. I'm not sure what he would honestly make of my rendition though, I'm still shocked every time I listen to the original just how alive it is.
Your rendition is just fine! You have a good inspiration in Kenny's works. Yours is not a carbon copy of his solo, and that's the cool thing about jazz structures. They don't seem stilted or mechanical, and Kenny always floated over the changes with ease. I see the other comments are positive as well. Your other pieces sound great. Are you a working musician, 'cause you oughta be? Play on!
wow.. finally i can say i've found someone who can actually play this! frickin awsome! hoped someone would post this solo up one day and now you have!
Really well done, that sent chills down the spine, reminded me again of why i got into playing the piano :D
Great stuff man! May Kirk rest in peace! You have captured something here. This is also a wonderful tribute to him. Heaven is my destination when my time is up!
@samgrimley I'm certainly willing to help with getting a transcript together. I have some midi to stave software (logic) which creates a just about readable score. I know I haven't got the rhythm right for large parts of it, but with enough people working on it I bet it could be made very close to the original.
@paulwwells Good idea. This is the Holy Grail of pop / jazz piano solos. I'm sure Kenny is smiling proudly from heaven, or wherever it is that musicians go when they die..... !
@samgrimley Kenny is in the land of infinite octaves, infinite keys, infinite modes, infinite patches and an infinite audience who never grow tired of his infinitely inventive improvisations.
Nice work - you covered it all! what other solos do you like - have you ever heard Michel Camillo - "From Within" off the album Calle 54 is another one of my favorites....
Aha! So it's a Roland-RD-700SX! Very Good! I only have to older RD-700. Very pleased with it, but I know that the newer versions really kicks ass! Want one! Still, good playing from you, Paul! Keep up the good work!
The 700SX and GX have better piano sounds, and also soundbanks+a little better piano-action, I think.1 major criticism against the original RD-700 (mine is from 2002) was that the major piano sounds did'nt "sing" enough! I to a certain degree agree with that. After trying a lot of different types of digital/sampled pianos like Roland V-piano, Pianoteq and East-Weat Quantum Leap I think this criticism is kind of to the point. Enjoy your fine piece of hardware!! I might buy one myself soon!
I didn't record it on a midi file. I could probably make one if I can still remember it (it's about 2.5 years ago now). Can you explain a bit more what you would do with the midi file?
Sorry Paul, I commented on the wrong tune, it was LeftBack, Gallery Theme from Vision On. Cannot get the music, and I dont seem able to get all the chords from the vid. My musical ear is a little "deaf", and man I love that tune.
making a midi file of that song would help those who don't have the capability to transcribe this solo by ear. It's pretty simple to create the score from a midi file with the help of software. Anyway, I'd be very interested, too !!
That was an excellent transcription and playing. Sorry I pressed the one star button by accident ( did not mean to at all) You are obviously a fan of Kenny Kirkland
Said it before, will say it again: I'm so impressed and think you are very good to have decoded this solo. But one question and one humble demand for you this time: 1) What keyboard are you using?
2) Pleeeeze post a midi-file of this solo! I know that I'm supposed to do it by ear myself, but I've tried and can't get it right!
As a piano virtuoso myself - I want to show respect and appreciation for a great performance. Very tight - and especially in terms of capturing the rhythm and the feel of kennys playing.
I'd be grateful, if you have a chance, to message me a very brief description of the approach you took in analysing his solo - and how you went about trying to recreate it. Thanks in advance.
Thank you very much Bnes39. It's exactly like doing a jigsaw, starting with the easiest bits and gradually filling in the gaps in between. On some of the faster passages I used an mp3 editor to listen to it slowed down and playing a tight loop - which I could then play along to. As soon as I could play it end-to-end I kept making recordings every few days, each time listening to where it needed improvement. Hope this helps :)
Paul, having never done hard drugs I would assume that Hyena must be on some when he say's his version surpassed yours. The patch used was almost abnotious - only in my oppinion. Both are nice as long as they were played in the manner of a Marcus Miller tune "Straight Fron the Heart", kutos to both. (that's just me) I reference this clip often when I pick up me bass. Some day I add bass to it anc send it to you as a colaboration.
wow i wich icould play like that

Paul, having never done hard drugs I would assume that Hyena must be on some when he say's his version surpassed yours. The patch used was almost abnotious - only in my oppinion. Both are nice as long as they were played in the manner of a Marcus Miller tune "Straight Fron the Heart", kutos to both. (that's just me) I reference this clip often when I pick up me bass. Some day I add bass to it anc send it to you as a colaboration.
