  • FUCK YEAH! Tear it up!

  • PFarrrkkkkkk! And even whips the drum track off on cue. Excellent work.

  • @GregOdrums I remember there was one failed take where I played the whole thing then pressed the wrong button.

  • @paulwwells Ha - I would have edited that one 8-)

  • @MisterSea7 Ah thank you - that's very kind.

  • ¡¡¡Buen trabajo Paul!!! Good job Paul!!! Bon travail Paul !!!

  • Great! Like a Rick Wakeman!

  • I'm impressed by Your playing, great job!

... and waiting for tutorial ;)

  • Smokin' man! I never get tired of this. Lots of finesse and nuance. You are one cool jazz cat.

  • @dustypickups Thank you, you are very kind. Jazz is a massive, massive subject; I only wish some day I will be able to give it at least a fraction of the attention it deserves.

  • @paulwwells

    Dear Paul...... NO COMMENT!

Your Hand Talkin' at all !!!

    U are great!

    Dino

  • AMAZING Kenny!!! R.I.P. !!!!! You did an AMAZING job to emulate the best Kenny K. solo!!!

  • @giuseppeamico3200 Thank you.

  • That is amazing.

  • ouah

    perfect

    big bravo from france

  • I would love to play this solo, man. I really should practice more to play it! great performance, gratz!

  • @cmrcoelho It was a lot of work to get all the bits together, but once they were all there I just wanted to play it over and over.

  • great job!!!!......how somebody could disliked this...................the reason:..lots of people has issues with jealousy!!!

  • Genious!

  • T O T A L L Y B R I L L I A N T ! ! ! ! !

  • awesome, thanks!

  • So cool, Kenny Kirklands piano solo was so great and you play it extremely good, love it!*****

  • Ha ha!! That is so rad!!! Brilliant! I've loved KK's solo since the double album first came out (I think I was 16). I think a couple of people have already mentioned it, but I've listened to that solo so many times over the last 20 years or so that I know every part of it. The fact that you can actually play it must be a kick. Total payoff for all the work that must have gone into learning it. Again: well done.

  • @kls2157 Thank you. The real kick was each weekend when I would tackle the next couple of bars thinking 'I wonder what will be in this bit?'. It was a shame when there was no more left to figure out. I know I could do the same with another piece but I never have done because I haven't been listening to any other piece over and over for 20 years without knowing what was in it.

  • Paul, this is my all time favourite pop piano solo. I've heard it a million times, can dream every bit of it. You did an AMAZING job to emulate the solo. hands UP!

  • @toniohhs Thank you. I did put ten times as much effort into figuring out and polishing up this solo than any other on this channel. Glad you like it.

  • Bro this is amazing!! I've loved this live version of the song, listened to it for years, you've done a truly cracking job here, congrats!

  • @101JonnyD Thank you for your comment. Glad you are still listening to this version.

  • Tutorial or transcription, please!! You are fantastic! When my world is running down, i just see this video and feel recharged.

  • @maestropires I didn't make a midi file - and a tutorial of the whole thing would be quite a project. What I can do is start making tutorials of small sections and see how that goes.

  • pardon me sir... but that is fucking genius!!!

  • Brilliant!

  • Hola, me parece genial el canal, las canciones y especialmente la forma de tocar. Me encantaría usar este canal para aprender a tocar la batería

Si al autor no le importa usaré algunas canciones para dar cover con la batería.

    Gracias

  • THE SPIRIT OF KENNY IS HERE!!

  • @stinguy30 Thank you. You are very kind. I did try my best with this one.

  • @paulwwells - WOW! a long-time Sting fan salutes you. I recognize the whole solo which means you are right on the money. Excellent! How about the (similar) solo from "Never Coming Home"?

  • @paulwwells - amazing - how about a video of the (similar) solo from "Never Coming Home" on the Sacred Love CD???

  • what album was original solo on, I have the Dream of the Blue Turtles CD, That was recorded around the same time as the Bring On the Night DVD in Paris in the French Chateau,.. which was KIrkland's Marsalis, fist disc with Sting, or I am wrong. Would love original CD, please help. Great Job!,

  • @padsax1 I thought it was a double CD of the Dream of the Blue Turtles album, because the opening song was bring on the night and dream of the blue turtles was near the end of CD2. Sorry I cannot be any more exact, but it was a long time ago.

  • @padsax1 Its from the Live double CD Bring on the night, performed live in Paris.

  • @padsax1 It was on the CD "Bring On The Night" which was released shortly after the movie of the same title. You can find it at Amazon.com.

  • @padsax1 It's on Bring on the Night - a double live CD of the Sting's presentation at Paris, with the Dream of The Blue Turtles band. It was the begining of his solo project. Simply amazing.

  • Very Cool! =)

  • pretty good you got some skills

  • What a fantastic job Paul. Did you ever make that midi file? If so, how can I get it or buy it?

  • @loonpolice1 Sorry I never did make a midi file - I am making transcriptions of a lot of songs at the moment and will do this one too.

  • Tutorial !!!!!

  • Where's the original kirkland solo? It seems to be replaced by a video of some french mansion...

  • @matthiashavenaar I never did find the original here on YouTube

  • @matthiashavenaar

    I found that on youtube

  • oh wow incredible playing............i saw them live in 1985? i think in Melbourne, great job Paul what an effort i wont ask how long it took to work that out but please tell do you have a midi file ? ;];];]; and if so can i have a copy?

  • oh wow incredible playing............i saw them live in 1985? i think in Melbourne, great job Paul what an effort i wont ask how long it took to work that out but please tell do you have a midi file ? ;];];]; and if so can i have a copy?

  • This is one of my all times piano favorite solos and you did it very very well. Amazing! Keep posting!

  • Bravo! Thanks for showing off a little. I can picture Kenny nodding his head in approval. Fantastic execution!

  • @EclecticSongwriter I like to think Kenny would be pleased to see how much his music is still admired in 2010. I'm not sure what he would honestly make of my rendition though, I'm still shocked every time I listen to the original just how alive it is.

  • Your rendition is just fine! You have a good inspiration in Kenny's works. Yours is not a carbon copy of his solo, and that's the cool thing about jazz structures. They don't seem stilted or mechanical, and Kenny always floated over the changes with ease. I see the other comments are positive as well. Your other pieces sound great. Are you a working musician, 'cause you oughta be? Play on!

  • wow

  • TE GANA?

  • wow, you captured it dude! well pld!

  • This is great - who are the dorks who pressed the "dislike" button?

  • That was frickin' ridiculous!

  • great job! one of may favorite solos ever....wish i could see slightly different perspective so I could get it..... Peter

  • wow.. finally i can say i've found someone who can actually play this! frickin awsome! hoped someone would post this solo up one day and now you have!

Really well done, that sent chills down the spine, reminded me again of why i got into playing the piano :D

    Keep up the good work!

  • @SEBBZ12345 Thanks. It's nearly three years ago but I still remember how enjoyable it was to learn.

  • Amazing !

  • yesss, i like to come back here and listen again. Just checked the original, tight emulation!!

  • Great stuff man! May Kirk rest in peace! You have captured something here. This is also a wonderful tribute to him. Heaven is my destination when my time is up!

  • I've been thinking of transcribing this for a while.... Might be easier to do it off this vid than the original!! Good work man.

  • @samgrimley I'm certainly willing to help with getting a transcript together. I have some midi to stave software (logic) which creates a just about readable score. I know I haven't got the rhythm right for large parts of it, but with enough people working on it I bet it could be made very close to the original.

  • @paulwwells Good idea. This is the Holy Grail of pop / jazz piano solos. I'm sure Kenny is smiling proudly from heaven, or wherever it is that musicians go when they die..... !

  • @samgrimley Kenny is in the land of infinite octaves, infinite keys, infinite modes, infinite patches and an infinite audience who never grow tired of his infinitely inventive improvisations.

  • You are a maniac, covering the greatest piano solo ever...and you did it perfectly. Respect :-)

  • Nice work - you covered it all! what other solos do you like - have you ever heard Michel Camillo - "From Within" off the album Calle 54 is another one of my favorites....

  • My godness!!! This is awesome. Are you for real???? Kirk will be kicking himself if he listen to you. Congratulations!

  • @angelgarfield1 I like to think that he would be happy to know that in 2010 people still applaud his music.

  • Dude...you beat the sh%t outta that thang...for REAL! I KNOW you got soul!!! Props! ;-D xo

  • Very nice! You really nailed it!!!

  • Awesomeness! Brilliant, dude!

  • I would pay you if you give the charts of this playing! I'm serious. I'll give my Email. It's a dream playing this solo!

    Thanks

    Rudeluck

  • Aha! So it's a Roland-RD-700SX! Very Good! I only have to older RD-700. Very pleased with it, but I know that the newer versions really kicks ass! Want one! Still, good playing from you, Paul! Keep up the good work!

  • @olearo I don't know what the differences are between the 700 and the 700SX. And I don't know what they are planning after the GX.

  • The 700SX and GX have better piano sounds, and also soundbanks+a little better piano-action, I think.1 major criticism against the original RD-700 (mine is from 2002) was that the major piano sounds did'nt "sing" enough! I to a certain degree agree with that. After trying a lot of different types of digital/sampled pianos like Roland V-piano, Pianoteq and East-Weat Quantum Leap I think this criticism is kind of to the point. Enjoy your fine piece of hardware!! I might buy one myself soon!

  • nice hands dude XD

  • Brilliant Man! Brilliant!!! Did you get it all by your ears????? I want to play it too:)))

  • Terrific ! Absolutely great :)

  • 5 stars

  • Nice Job Man....Always wanted to work this one....inspired!

  • Wonderful, exuberant playing! 5* Lorna

  • Thank you Lorna

  • Brillaint Tune from my past. Do you have it on Midi file? I would love to arrange it.........

  • I didn't record it on a midi file. I could probably make one if I can still remember it (it's about 2.5 years ago now). Can you explain a bit more what you would do with the midi file?

  • Sorry Paul, I commented on the wrong tune, it was LeftBack, Gallery Theme from Vision On. Cannot get the music, and I dont seem able to get all the chords from the vid. My musical ear is a little "deaf", and man I love that tune.

  • Ah OK. Sorry I haven't got that either.

  • Hi Paul,

making a midi file of that song would help those who don't have the capability to transcribe this solo by ear. It's pretty simple to create the score from a midi file with the help of software. Anyway, I'd be very interested, too !!

  • trop bon !

  • merci beaucoup

  • de r'in.... vraiment

  • u da man!!!!...good job!!!

  • Nice work , pal. Well done! :-)

  • Thank you :)

  • BRAVOOOOO

  • Amazing! Well done!

  • Hey mister Kirkland.

Great job. Did you write it down, or just listening?

    Wim.

  • Incredibly impressive. And I must have listened to the original a million times... You have a remarkable ear!!

  • great job! you really got talent.

  • nice swing!

  • Hey man, great job! I always wanted to play that solo, do you have maybe some notes written?

  • realy good. Did you write it down because I can read but it would take me forever to figure this out by ear.

  • I did try some midi to stave software but the results were really messy and would need a lot of editing.

  • mnkfdl also reproduced this, and in her video you can see what she's playing; the camera view is from top.

  • Amazing! Really loved the imrpovisation!

Do you mix any scales here?

  • HI mlavik1 - all I've done is a note-for-note reproduction of Kenny Kirkland's solo; it's not my improvisation.

  • Kenny 乙

  • This is such fun! Your transciption is excellent. Thank you.

  • That was an excellent transcription and playing. Sorry I pressed the one star button by accident ( did not mean to at all) You are obviously a fan of Kenny Kirkland

  • very good!!

  • PERFECT MAN!!! what piano / synthesiser are you using??

    ASHPD

  • Excelente, muy similar a la version de Kenny Kirkland en buenos aires 1987

  • This just made me very happy! Such an awesome jam... one of my all-time favs.

  • Righteous! Thanks for bringing that massive piece of art back to life.

  • Thank you jeffsech

  • easily my favorite piano solo of all time. reminds of me of childhood. fucking rad.

  • Excellent transcription!!

  • Thank you musicnbeyond

  • Wow...PHAT!!

  • thats a nice piano

  • kudos! well, well, done.

  • Totally, tightly nailed!! Amazing!!

If only your cam was over your RD, would be even be more fUn for keyboardists viewers like me.

    Anyway, congratulations!!!

  • I will do something to show how it is played.

  • Thanks and well done! this solo has been one of my favs since it saw the light. Could you send me a midi-file?

  • I didn't record the midi - I plan to play it again slowly and see if I can capture the midi or at least a view from above.

  • Yeah !!! :D

  • Nice! Very Well Done!

  • bravo...complimenti!

  • Said it before, will say it again: I'm so impressed and think you are very good to have decoded this solo. But one question and one humble demand for you this time: 1) What keyboard are you using?

    2) Pleeeeze post a midi-file of this solo! I know that I'm supposed to do it by ear myself, but I've tried and can't get it right!

Three thumbs up, man, do more like this!

  • I'll do a midi file - it won't be straight away though, I've got a few projects on the go at the moment.

  • I'm from Argentina.

I love your performance. Do you know how can I get the score of this solo piano??

    Thank you very much!!

  • As a piano virtuoso myself - I want to show respect and appreciation for a great performance. Very tight - and especially in terms of capturing the rhythm and the feel of kennys playing.

I'd be grateful, if you have a chance, to message me a very brief description of the approach you took in analysing his solo - and how you went about trying to recreate it. Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you very much Bnes39. It's exactly like doing a jigsaw, starting with the easiest bits and gradually filling in the gaps in between. On some of the faster passages I used an mp3 editor to listen to it slowed down and playing a tight loop - which I could then play along to. As soon as I could play it end-to-end I kept making recordings every few days, each time listening to where it needed improvement. Hope this helps :)

  • Kenny Kirkland's ..............the greatest.

    Good job Paul!

David Sancious is also great in this song......

  • Great Job ! Don't suppose you have a transcription ? ;-) (Ok that's really cheeky I know !)

  • superb Paul, absolutely superb. Really captured what Kenny was all about.

  • Wow! One of my favorites. Good Job man!

  • Long live kenny,and Paul.

  • long live kenny kirkland

  • man you should definitely get someone to record a track of the bass line. youd be set :-)

id do it but i dont have the proper equipment hehe

  • Paul, having never done hard drugs I would assume that Hyena must be on some when he say's his version surpassed yours. The patch used was almost abnotious - only in my oppinion. Both are nice as long as they were played in the manner of a Marcus Miller tune "Straight Fron the Heart", kutos to both. (that's just me) I reference this clip often when I pick up me bass. Some day I add bass to it anc send it to you as a colaboration.

  • Holy crap, dude. That's amazing. Nice job.
