  • KOOLIMPA

  • BLUE!

  • Why does Vinnk have two Wiis?

  • @therealhardrock Region locking: one is to play US games, the other Japanese.

  • @SeanOrange why didn't you just mod the US one?

  • @EpicTwistedOne Because Nintendo and other companies tend to frown upon that, you'll probably be excluded from further firmware updates, and (commensurate to those facts) it voids your warranty.

We tend to be anti-piracy, anti-ROM, anti-modding here at the Dojo.

  • @SeanOrange Oh.

  • 4:50 He lost right when he turned on the game.

  • I like how when sean puts a different game into the disk system, its always on a akumajo Dracula disk. hah

  • @Trevpwnsnoobs Hahaha, yeah... we're addressing that for Season 2 (when we use the Disk System, anyhow) ;)

  • the fact that you talk a lot about Japan-exclusive games on this show got me thinking, what percentage of games released on the Famicom were also released on the NES?

  • @therealhardrock That's actually a pretty good question! We should investigate...

  • i tout that there was also a saperate microphone specialy designed for the a/v famicom wich plugs in the ext input but don,t know.

  • Link Shouts: MOTHER-FUCKING-RABBITS!!!!!!!!

    lol XD

  • If I recall, you could kill Pols Voice with the bow and arrow. :<

  • @MomijiTsukuyomi Well, sure, but... ruin my fun, will you?? Hahaha

  • @SeanOrange Sorry. :P

  • Twin-Famicom This brings back memories.

    It is valuables.

  • I don't get why people always compare Takeshi's Challenge to Grand Theft Auto. I guess they both take place in a city and you can beat people up in both. In that case, Final Fight is like GTA as well.

  • @akumacornflakes We didn't show the part where your cousin keeps calling you to go bowling, and you have to explain (through the microphone) that you're Japanese and don't GO bowling.

  • @akumacornflakes

Because beating people is not the main goal of the game but only a possibility.

  • blue. Blue! BLUEE!

  • Damn it, that oriental yell at the start of the show. i recognize it!

    WHERE FROM!?

  • So in Takeshi's Challenge, you got money, beat up your boss, beat up random people, then went to a bar, got drunk, then went home and beat your wife and kids?

Yeaaaah, try releasing a game like that nowadays and see what happens XP

  • you should have put your tv on 4.3 stretch

  • You kidding? I HATE that. The proportions look all strange.

  • no cuz strech shows pretty decent on my tv.but the thing is you hafta have a decent tv in order to pull it off with out it looking all choppy my older samsung shows horible in 4.3 next to my new 1

  • i wasn't aware of this till read Naruto vol 8!

(Kishimoto had a thing for dragon quest)

  • GOD they do the same steps when playing another game LOL

  • i wish takeshi`s challenge was released in english it looks like a fun game!

  • Looks can be deceiving... hahaha

  • It's wierd that Nintendo doesn't mention the older versions of the video game consoles of the past before the release of NES and just recently Nintendo Power Magazine came out with "20 Years of Nintendo Power". They coverd everything except for the Famicom units. I guess they only wanted to mention the US releases or something. IDK :(

  • Yeah, the NES was the first release outside of Japan, if you don't count the Game & Watch sets. And of course Nintendo was releasing arcade cabinets as well.

Now the Color TV Game systems... THOSE are interesting.

  • i wish i have a famicom

  • blue...blue...BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that first game looks funny drink to much and have to fight your wife and kid

  • When I saw: "SUNSOFT" I said: "Son of a Crap..."

  • hey i just realised... the famicom and the N64 were both systems that were ahead of there time... by a LONG shot

  • That's why it's Famicom Dojo and not, like Master System Dojo. ;)

  • dude i wish i had the systems you have....

  • punch those kids!

  • blue...... blue..... BLUE!!!!!

  • I saw those first two games on Game Center CX. Arino drove himself insane trying to beat them =D

  • Poor Arino! Can you blame us for not trying too hard? ;)

  • Arino is my hero, he's always so optimistic!

  • 6:30 I'm dying waiting for my Twim Famicom and Disk version of Zelda 1 (bought from risingstuff...hurry up! You make me a sad panada!! :( ) to do that for a special Let's Play video series. Heaven only knows what people from the internets might say when they use the microphone.

  • That first game you featured was hilarious! Nice vid :-)

  • Other shows might showcase skill, but we showcase completely lack thereof! ;)

  • Hey,is it possible to play any famicom game using the adapter that Gyromite used?

  • You could, but anything that used the sound expansion would emit no sound.

  • So it'd basically be NES-soundified, or muted entirely?

  • yes

  • I have never tried it, but the sound meant for the FM Synthesis chip would probably be completely muted.

  • Takeshi no Chosenjo and Atlantis no Nazo are two Famicom games that are popular in Japan. So popular, they were both featured on GameCenter CX ("Retro Game Master" outside of Japan) and were added to the Japanese Virtual Console.

  • those two games are the most messed up games ever. but still remain retro cool.

  • Takeshi no Chosenjo was made to be awful on purpose, and so was "Trio the Punch: Never Forget Me...", an arcade game by Data East. Atlantis no Nazo was made to break the level number record. Super Mario World has over 90, while Atlantis no Nazo has around 100. Transformers: Convoy no Nazo is another game that's quite popular in Japan, which was also released for the Virtual Console and was featured in a Game Center CX DVD Special.

  • Ha ha, you're silly. I know all about those games. I actually am a proud owner of Convoy no Nazo and laughed so hard when I saw Arinosan getting killed.

  • Now there is one thing I kept wondering about: why are Spelunker, The Cheetahmen series, Milon's Secret Castle, Ikki and Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi so popular? I heard that Spelunker has a character that falls so often, while The Cheetahmen series has some music considered to be quite catchy.

  • Milon's Secret Castle is a fav of mine. Good memories from playing it in my youth because games were not that complex then. But the rest, especailly Ikki which I though was a boring shooter I never understood. To my horror, at the end of Atlantis no Nazo, you discover the main character. Shees...

  • The main character (or protagonist) of Ikki is Gonbe. In the same game, player two controls Tago. After the popular Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) reviewed Milon's Secret Castle, several viewers and AVGN fans started posting this comment in several videos related to the game:

"If you came to this video after watching Angry Video Game Nerd.

    Copy and paste this."

  • AVGN is exagerating the game, but that's his character. Its not soo bad... but I admit, its hard as nails especially if you don't know the continue code.

  • Transformers: Convoy no Nazo also has a continue code, but you can only use it a limited number of times.

  • Oh this is wild! I don't get notified when people reply to each other, so ten months went by and I didn't even know this discussion thread was here!

I noticed when AVGN reviewed Convoy no Nazo and had to give a little background about the Famicom, he didn't say anything about this show. Jerk! Hahaha

  • I believe Convoy no Nazo was made to be a challenging action platformer, due to several other 1986 Famicom games like Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels and Atlantis no Nazo also being quite challenging and popular at the time. Americans mostly wanted games that are both, fair and fun.

Perhaps they are so bad in AVGN's opinion, he doesn't want to even research about them. He said it was left in Japan, because no one outside of Japan would want it. It's actually what StrategyWiki said.

  • "Blue... BLUE... BLUE!!" That is so true xD

  • Do RF or AV cables work anywhere in the world?

  • Good question!

Next episode we talk about hooking up your TV, but we didn't get into talking about PAL/NTSC differences.

AV cables you MIGHT be okay with just about any TV. RF you probably won't be so lucky. There are RF-to-AV converters if your TV doesn't understand NTSC over RF (but is able to do so with AV) -- which you would need for the original Famicom on a PAL TV.

Also, we might have an answer for why the Famicom displays on channels 95 and 96 on US televisions! :O

  • RF doesn't work in most countries outside Japan since they used some weird frequencies that everyone else didn't. A few US televisions can take it though.

AV (also known as Composite AV) is universal however. I use AV to play my Famicoms on my PAL TV set.

  • Okay, thanks.

  • Another great episode.

  • where can I get a famicom

  • In Japan?^_^

Sometimes you can get one at Ebay.

    BUT BEWARE!!!

The Original Famicom has only an RF Output, hwo is not compatible with the US (or EU) TV Stanart.

If you want an Famicom buy an Famicom AV or an Twinfamicom.

  • Or the AV famicom, you can use a rf cable (or is it coaxal?) from your NES. It works perfectly ^^

  • I enjoyed the information in this video, but to give some creative criticism, I found the attempts at humour too forced. And it saddens me to see a group of men with ALL those foreign consoles and huge fucking TVs etc who would even include videos showing that they in fact, cannot finish a game. Pah!

  • Vinnk and I are fans of Game Center CX, where they have already finished these games. Why subject ourselves to these same tortures, especially when someone has already made money doing it?

Seriously, though, I would have liked to include more clips than we did, but live and learn!

  • Fair enough, I was unaware of Game Center CX.

Nice to see you accepting creative criticism.

Sorry if I came across as grouchy, my NES just died and it annoyed me to see some guys apparently not being able to finish NES games with three of the fuckers just lying around in their room. Peace!

  • No problem. We were under some time constraints (self-imposed), among other factors. I think we need to hire interns to play the games, just like Shinya-san!

Accepting criticism is part of the deal, ya know? If the people watching don't like it, what's the point in making more?

  • Is Beat Takeshi the same Takeshi that "Takeshi's Castle" (called MXC in the US) is named after?

  • Yup. The same.

  • Nintendo should still support the Famicom.

  • Hmm, get too drunk and you have to go home and deal with the wife and kids... Of course they kill you and claim the insurance money "It's so sad, he fell down and stabbed himself with a kitchen knife"

  • This series is fucking AWESOME

I beg of you to make more.

  • Making more now! Are you watching Season 2 yet? :)

  • This is the one time that the preview of the next episode really is a preview of the next episode.

  • Kind of like that episode of Arrested Development with Julia Louis-Dreyfus...

It was also used as the "last time" on the next episode, and so was never technically used in the episode itself. SO CONFUSING! Hahaha

  • i love this kind shows which inform ye try to be funny, you're doing great job dudes

i would love to hear more things like the famicom av and other accessories and differences between NES and Famicom

  • Thanks!

AV Famicom you say... hmmm... interesting...

  • blue....blue!!....BLEU!!!!!

    classic

  • I love these videos but is there enough to say about the Famicom to create that many more episodes of the dojo with?

  • Man, we could go on and on about just the Famicom. But that's not the intent going forward, nor is it the intent when we started. It's about the how largely decisions made in the Japanese market, where the gaming renaissance began, affected what we saw in the rest of the world. And we will continue to do that with the Super Famicom, N64, and many concurrent non-Nintendo systems!

  • So I guess in a roundabout way I was asking if you'd have to change the name of the show to match the episode's focus? The Super Famicom Dojo? The Mark III Dojo? The Mega Drive Dojo? The PC Engine Dojo?

  • I don't think so, although "temporarily" changing the name of the show is not out of the question... ;)

  • Pols voice dislikes voice, interesting.

  • The mic was also used to distract enemies in Metal Gear as well.

  • REALLY?? OH MAN...

  • Hahaha, yeah, all of those things are mentioned in this ep. :p

  • I love your videos! Keep it up!

  • Ah man, this episode made me want to buy some games for my Sharp Twin FC.

Alas I still don't have a properly working AC adapter for it. I tried buying one on eBay and got gypped because it won't power on the system.

  • Whaaaat, it's still not working? All you need is to hook it up to an antenna input and change the channel to 95 (if the console is set to Channel 1) or 96 (if it's set to Channel 2). Otherwise you might be able to use a VCR as a passthrough/converter, but still need to set it to 95/96. It's how I capture all my game footage.

  • 8:39

    Dun-dun-duuuuuun!

I'm really interested in what that other Famicom was. I COULD just look it up on wikipedia but I think I'll just wait for the next Famicom Dojo.

  • Sharp Twin Famicom. Nintendo allowed sharp to licence a famicom with a built in disk system

  • D: I said I was going to wait for the next episode! Oh well, that's okay. :p

  • oh there will be more to it then that :P

  • It's true.

More, MUCH MORE than this. We'll do it OUR way... XD

  • Awesome, looking forward to it. :)

  • cool. would've been cool to see the kid icarus footage + mic though.

  • I agree. For those parts we didn't demonstrate directly, it either had to do with the difficulty of the game or time constraints.

Anyone who thinks they can capture video of these games working, feel free! I'd even encourage you to make it a video response to this episode. I was going to solicit for that stuff in the episode directly, but -- again -- time. Or lack thereof.

  • Awesome, I did always wonder just what games actually used the thing...great video!

  • I've been waiting for some time now to see another Famicom Dojo video. Nice!

  • this is just what i was look9ing for

  • Nice to see you back, great episode.

  • He hooked it up to his LCD with no issues?

I have an AV Famicom and cant get it to display right, is there something that would help?

  • The AV Famicom SHOULD work normally. It might not work if it's actually PAL or something (or you're in a PAL region using an NTSC console). I would think you'd have a harder time with RF, except I haven't had any problems with that either. :\

  • Kewl I was wondering where you guys where. Great show!

  • cool

  • Excellent Work! Your shows are always awesome!

  • Good stuff as always, keep it up!

  • Awesome as always guys. That game vinnk showed was damn funny, I bet it would have gotten soooooo much censorship here at that time.

  • The story of Takeshi no Chousenjou is pretty interesting, and could take up a whole episode. Fortunately, it was already covered in length during Game Center CX. We tried to find a way to mention it during our episode, but nothing really felt right.

I know -- someone email me a question, and we can cover it in the mailbag!

  • w00t! another episode!

  • The Wii Speak seems like the next step for the voice idea, hopefully it isn't relegated to Animal Crossing alone. Nintendo is actually pressing it as important to capture not just the players voice, but the voice of everyone in the living room... sounds like they just have the volume too high.

    Very informative gentlemen thank you!
