  • Hey Mike, I was wondering how many different words there are to refer to the Mandarin language? I'm currently learning Mandarin with the Pimsleur method, and they use putonghua (common language). In your video you say zhongwon? (I can't read Chinese characters yet, so I need to use pinyin).

Finally, what would you recommend to learn Chinese characters? Do you have any tricks for memorization, etc? Would you have any books to recommend to learn how to read and write?

    Thanks!

  • This is a superb lesson. Thank you very much.

  • Is there any difference between 念nian4 and 学xue2 or can they be used interchangeably? And how would you say e.g. "I can read pinyin but not bopomofo"? Can I use 看kan4 in this context as well?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @Quifore hmm.. 念and 学are somewhat similar in meaning, but may not always be interchangeable. eg. you can say 我在念书, but you can't say 我在学书. I think that while both can be used to refer to the act of studying, 念has the added meaning of recalling something you've learnt before, while 学has the implication that you're learning something new? As for 'I can READ pinyin', I would use 读rather than 看. Btw, the stuff I typed here may not be accurate (I'm not very proficient in Chinese).
