I personally know 5 teachers, and they all say that besides loving to teach; 3 months of vacation every year is the main reason they went into education. I work 9 hours a day with an hour lunch and get 3 weeks vacation. With other holidays I work about 240 days a year. that is 1920 hours per year not counting overtime. Most school kids go 180 days a year with 7 hour days that is 1260. This means than school kids go to school 660 hours per year less than most adults work. A 7 hours per day this means that school kids go to school 94 days less than most adults work. Since lunch and breaks are in that 8 hours I'm not counting homework.
Test have shown that a longer school day improves test scores. If just an hour of instructional time is added to a 7 hour school day that will give kids and extra 180 hours per year of instructional time or 25 days worth of extra instruction. I don't think kids should be required to learn more materal per say, but they should just inprove how much the kids retain (inprove test scores). I think a trade off should be less homework. I don't think kids should lose their summer though.
I agree with what you're saying; I'm fine with them making the school-year a bit longer, because Obama DOES have a small point. Other countries are smarter than us, making us look like fuck-tards. However, I'm pissed for the fact that he might expand the school-DAY. I'm so busy after school, I have no play-time or anything, only on weekends. I'd be tired as a dog if he extends the school-day.

Seems that the ends justify the means at any cost.

They have biweekly guidance counseling (to make sure everything sticks), nutritious free lunch, learn multiple languages and small class sizes (so each student gets more time with the teacher). I work 9 hours a day with an hour lunch and get 3 weeks vacation. With other holidays I work about 240 days a year. that is 1920 hours per year not counting overtime. Most school kids go 180 days a year with 7 hour days that is 1260. This means than school kids go to school 660 hours per year less than most adults work. A 7 hours per day this means that school kids go to school 94 days less than most adults work. Since lunch and breaks are in that 8 hours I'm not counting homework.

Test have shown that a longer school day improves test scores. If just an hour of instructional time is added to a 7 hour school day that will give kids and extra 180 hours per year of instructional time or 25 days worth of extra instruction. I don't think kids should be required to learn more materal per say, but they should just inprove how much the kids retain (inprove test scores). I think a trade off should be less homework. I don't think kids should lose their summer though.

I agree with what you're saying; I'm fine with them making the school-year a bit longer, because Obama DOES have a small point. Other countries are smarter than us, making us look like fuck-tards. However, I'm pissed for the fact that he might expand the school-DAY. I'm so busy after school, I have no play-time or anything, only on weekends. I'd be tired as a dog if he extends the school-day.

youre right. lets see, my daughter is already at school from 8am until 3:15pm. her dad goes to work from 2pm until midnight (military so hes also out of state a lot). IF they change the times and she gets home at 6pm and he happens to be off work on a weekday,thats only 2 hours until she has to go to bed.during that time she'll be doing homework,eat,bathe.now, tell me.when is my child suposed to see her father? dont say weekends because this soldier dont get weekends off. hes active duty.FU BO

too many people subscribe to the "rigor and suffering is merit". I work 60 hours a week and go to school full time ( 5 classes) as a college student. You can see that our secondary education wants to push our kids to do this, which is sick. Now thats not what they are doing with no child left behind, but killing kids does not help education neither does teaching to a test.

It will also not help the teachers as they also want a summer break. If the school year gets extended, teachers are going to quit their jobs because they want their free vacation and they want kids to have some free time. Summer is meant to be a no-school season. Extending the school year won't help at all.

Look at kids today most are on some kind of drug for behavior issues,and kids are doing homework after school rather than playing after school. The work is ahead of how we were taught, and the kids today are being taught to quickly that they are not learning anything. Get real, Obama has no concern for those that can no longer take vacation since -if the inner city cant do it - no one else should have the privilege. Seems that his strategy here is to institute polices that hurt the majority so badly, they will try to solve issues they normally would ignore. (i.e. HealthCare, Cap and Trade, etc..) This is simply another Obama plan that targets solving inner city issues by implementing a national policy change. One of his stated motives was to give kids a safe place to be on weekends. As well, extending the school day 3 hrs has the ultimate effect of giving inner city residents a state/federal all-day day care system with the added benefit of keeping kids from roaming the streets hours a day and beating innocent kids to death with boards.

Right now I know how to animate, code, and make my own website if I have too. School as it is is already stressful enough. If school was extended I wouldnt be able to do ANY of that. Longer school years? YES. many kids have a tough transition when returning from the long Summer break.
Longer school days? NO WAY. We already have more school hours per year than most countries. Anyone involve din anything extra (teachers and students alike) can be at school from 7 am to 5-7pm on a nightly basis, with weekend hours as well.
Obama said NOTHING in that speech that showed we neede hundreds of more school hours than other countries. We need better teachers/school systems.

I was born and raised in San Diego and now live in Colorado. I have and manage rental properties and do well. My wife now home schools our daughter and is teaching more that the local school and loves having time together as a family. Extending School will pull families apart.

I agree with you completely! I read about this on the yahoo home page and I couldn't believe it. I go from 7:25 to 2:30. Not only that, but I'm in a sport. What does that mean now? My school probably won't be able to have ANY if this goes through, I really hope it doesn't. And I don't think making the day longer will help the kids learn more efficiently, if anything I believe it'll just teach us to ignore/blow off what we're being taught even more than usual. it is not a terrible thing for a kid to start college early nor does it mean that their secondary ed was inadaquate. What ted and obama wants is to make schooling all of a child's life. if they dont make the great fuck em < thats what it's going to come down to. over 30 universities have performed studies on this issue, they all point to a pretty negative conclusion economically and academically. sure you can have a success hear and there. but did any of those studies in massachussets last over a decade? nope. they want to make a decision with the dismaissal of other case studies and choose those that support what they want to do with our limited budget in education. btw work as an educator for a year, and youll know obamas full of shit.

I am by no means the spifiest with school, but I truley know what it means to put forth effort while being at a disadvantage and I garuntee you that not even kenedy knows what its like being from a less fortunate family and having to pay bills while in highschool.school should be what we expect from or youth not a privalage. there are ton of enrichment programs that need to gain wind.

You're right, but are you for or against additional schooling? Enrichment means additional studies on top of what is standard (ie more classes and longer days). If you sought higher education, you must concede that your K-12 was inadequate. A high school graduate in France has the equivalent of a US junior college education and can lead a fruitful life without continuing to higher education. More time in class means time to ensure students absorb the material being taught. I did my research.

Your angry because you had it easy? its an asshole thing to make others carry your expectations. you want more schooling, go for it, noone is stopping you. but why prevent others from doing so? kids struggle and they have a right to succeed in whats best for them, even if its not school.

Finland's school day is 8:30-3:30, (slightly longer than ours). Their school year is a little longer than ours. They have no study halls (more time in class). They have biweekly guidance counseling (to make sure everything sticks), nutritious free lunch, learn multiple languages and small class sizes (so each student gets more time with the teacher). And they're purely socialist. But I've wasted enough time with you. When you grow up you'll realize how ridiculously wrong you are.

iam sorry but your the one mistaken. epsecially with that france bullshit you spat out. a french secondary is not honored as an associates in the united states. your wrong and your a bully who could give a shit less about those less fortunate than you. the only thing people like you want is to purge our population who are weak from academics out of society. you have no appreciation what states, like maryland go through to give the states who are failing the extra academic attention.

well the real reason, although others wont listen, he does it is exactly for those negative reasons. more dropouts at earlier ages, working for the government to pay off education debts and what not. the stupider and more ignorant we are, the weaker we are, and the more easily controllable we are.
