ha! just playing a "roll on the fucking snare" you say? well if you cant play good on the snare then you cant play a damn thing on the set, mr 'travisbarkerkicksass'
Hello, notice 2 things. Look how he holds the stick in his left hand and if you put Keith Moon next to Gene; It's f...ing amazing! Check out the facial features, someone wanna make some money and bring back this type of genre??? just a thought, have many; curious...
I see a mess of folks here want to put Gene down by childish drug references. Given not a one of you can achieve what he achieved is not a thought to consider, heh? Gene sought to play simplistically, not unlike what Lester Young did on the tenor. However, get the pattern down and just to play it. It can't be done.
And, what does Keith Moon got to do with Gene? Gene knew how to play.
I really don't think he was into coke at all. In the 30's and early 40's he certainly was living the "high" life by smoking grass and drinking. Then again, this was pretty much the norm for a lot of jazz players. Krupa gave up weed after his arrest and never got into heroin. He did continue to drink.
@Krupa08 The video short that this was from was made years after the pot bust. Gene wasn't a pothead. By his own admission, he used it once in a while but said it just made him tired. He fully admitted to being a lush for many years. The media wanted a posterboy and he was the fall guy. Satchmo and Buddy Rich smoked pot their entire lives, but Gene still is painted as the drug addict when he never was
Yes, you're so right brother. Also remember how early this was in the time of drum kits. He and his contemporaries were among the first people to ever play on a drum set. So ask yourself what you would do with a brand new thing? It's like the electric guitar. Those early guys were amazing. I love these old films. The enthusiasm and even rowdiness like Krupa's was/is so cool. Love his Wuhans and bent up splashes! Hey Krupa, got a reefer? ;)
Not only is his stick height way up but the stick he used was pretty thin and light by todays standards. Also his early Radio King snare had a rim with no flange. Its a wonder he didnt break a ton of sticks. But damn his sound is unmistakable. Listen to his solo on Genes Blues, Its full of suprise and as musical as any drum solo I ever heard .
I never heard that one. I know Tough was a big influence on drummers like Mel Lewis and Jake Hannah. Buddy Rich and Krupa also respected Tough for his simple stylish swinging ability. Keith Moon certainly was a fan of Krupa. He also loved Ringo and DJ Fontana (which is interesting because their style was so strait-forward compared to Moon's). Where did you read that Keith Moon was influenced by Davey Tough's cymbal work?
Thats right. He was the best. And like many other people in the 1930's, 1940's, singers, actors, musicians, they were all better than the garbage we have today and in recent years.
@vibra64 Gee, I wonder how people in the 30s and 40s felt about Krupa and the music of their time? Oh, right. They renounced it for supposed degenerate tendencies, preferring to hearken back to the good ol' days before all that "crazy black music" got popular.
@BoStevoD I'm saying that people always tend to criticize the music coming out in their own day as being somehow lesser than the music of the past. In 2050 people will be whining about how shitty the new sounds are, and wishing they could go back to the day when supposedly "real" artists like Lil' Wayne and Eminem were around.

Check out the sloppy cymbal mount with the loose wing-nut. Man he could of used some better equipment. Still kicks ass though.

haha... yes! i love these old drum videos because the cymbals look so shitty. then again, the drum SET was a relatively new instrument.

@jimbobv8 it was 1945 bonehead. He couldn't go down to your local boxstore and choose from one of 6 dozen brands of hardware like you can now.
