  • This song makes me remember....when things were good, and better and simple. I was young, in my early 20's, my first apartment....Reminds me of a lot of firsts....

  • @MsAdriannes Absolutely true.

  • I remember this song was in "Running With Scissors" I love that movie!! Awesome song. RIP Phoebe.............

  • Amazing voice. Nobody does it better!

  • she was the best!

  • First heard this song when I was a young man many years ago such a classic love song still makes me pine.GSB

  • Those who dislike this song sadly have no soul. We can only pray for them.

  • Still can't believe that you have left us Phoebe. The more I think about it the more I know why. You were missing your dear Valerie Rose and are probably there with her being a caring mommy again. I bet she was suprised and happy to see her mommy again. I'm sad but I am at peace with it now. Still very upset about it though.

  • such a beautiful voice,im crying because she is gone

  • I remember when I was young I really disliked this song - I was just too young to understand it. When I hear it now, I'm stunned - the harp, the rhythm guitar, and Phoebe's voice weaving all through the beautiful sounds. This is a brilliant song.

  • That VOICE!!!! Forget Xanax, I'm taking a Phoebe Snow! So beautifull and serene ................

  • So underated: RIP Phoebe you are one of the greats

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard in my whole entire life!!!!!!!!!

  • I Love this tune, reminds me of young Love on a hot summer day!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG SO FUCKING MUCH !!!

  • i ljust love the acoustic guitar and her voice of course

  • Yes,. I remember this song Vancouver 70"s. Very nice, just strum my heart a little longer.gsb

  • this makes me thnk of pink sunsetish skies, soft colora, no worries !

  • im 13, alot of the misic these days is really negative and doesnt tell a story like the oldies <3

  • eddie bucher....if by some chance you are out there, looking at this at the same time i am, you made this song really special for me....thanks for that. it was on jodeo drive. you were pretty cool.

  • ...ooh yeah.

  • thankyou pheobe

  • Great song !!! Phoebe May be gone but will never be forgotten.R.I.P.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE, SO UNIQUE

  • subtle ode to infidelity!

  • Not to be crass..but this chick wants whoever she is singing about to make a move...you got it dude..go ahead and grab a titty..cos you're in. 8)

  • Something about that voice........ Mezmorizing!

  • For 5 ppl, the height of poetry is "There once was a man from Nantucket..."

  • Phoebe Snow will always be proud of her trademark song "Poetry Man". Thanks for the music, Phoebe. We love you!!

  • This song makes you feel like you're stoned, laughing with friends on a beautiful, cozy sunny morning with not a worry in the world, even if you're just ending a frustrating day, stuck in five o clock traffic.

  • missing u phoebe.

  • for you my friend...miss you.

  • yeah they need to make more music like this o lord i was in love then

    and i understood the words!!!!!

  • she's playing the guitar in this track too, you realize - !

  • This song is has a sweet sadness to it. You remember how good it made you feel, but, you'll never hear it again today.

  • phoebe knew she waz not a preety girl. as peeople saw as 2 b but no woman could sing like her becausse when ashe dide not try 2 be like most women, trying 2 be preety. she sang and became a godsess with her fine voice.. ok maybe 24 yearsa go but i thinki she still makes people feel fine.... i love p snow

  • @guido1365 I wish you could see a picture of her in her younger days. I don't know where that picture came from, but she is very beautiful. I think her weight just took away from her attractiveness.

  • she had soul

  • waz fine i sing her all da time

  • this song always calms me . I remember when it came out I was ten enjoyed it then and I enjoy it now, Very soulful and it still touches my soul and gives me chills of a real singer!

  • This is great, of course, but I just listened to her version of Gershwin's, "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York", here on Youtube!! The control, twists and turns, subtlties, phrasing, shapes and ease with which she seemingly does things with her voice are incredible!! Phoebe should easily be regarded as a vocalist among the best in American history!

  • Words escape me.

  • R.I.P Phoebe. The beauty of your voice and how this song played a part of my life will never be forgotten.

  • 5 dislikes....how unspeakably sad.

  • another awesome song of the 70's.....

  • This is truly classic indeed! ... One of my favorites of all times! .... "Timeless" ...

  • I can play this over & over 1000-X N still njoy this song. RIP Phoebe.

  • how can anybody dislike this song..

  • @MrDeaddaddy1 Only those with a lack of great musical taste would dislike it. Its fans like us, that will keep such great musical talent like this alive and its soul will live on forever. R.I.P Phoebe, forever dearly missed and will never ever be forgotten.

  • @MrDeaddaddy1 because they're stupid and have no clue and should just remain in bed

  • @MrDeaddaddy1 Uh, because everyone's musical taste is different? Not saying I would agree with them about "Poetry Man," but everyone's entitled to their opinion in matters of art, music, literature, etc. Personally I think most of the music of Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow is terrible, but they have millions of adoring fans who swear by them. And by the way, in this case there are 1,209 likes to only 5 dislikes, nothing to get hot and bothered about.

  • @danning1 what is you musical preference, hope you don't mind my asking...

  • @butchchase Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black. Just kidding. :-D

*Serious Answer: All over the place really. I have almost 2,000 different songs in my iTunes library. I mean, I like Iron Maiden, Bob Marley, and Jimmy Buffett a lot, just to show you how varied lol. I guess it just bothers me a little when someone implies no one has a right to dislike a song. I don't mind "Poetry Man," though my favorite Phoebe Snow song is actually "Two-Fisted Love." Hope that helps.

  • @danning1 all praises to Justin BEAVER! mwahahaha...but i guess fans of some music (esp on this network) well, really dislike people disliking their preference/s

  • phoebe, ur the " poetry woman" rest in peace

  • A song virtually forgotten in the annals of modern music. Hardly ever comes on the radio.

  • @primogennaio it's a damn shame isn't it?

  • R I P Phoebe and Valerie Rose......you were jewels for this earth.

  • 本音惜しくも他界した、フィビー・スノウ~ポエトリー・マン~素晴らしき伸びのいい歌声は聴けぬ!さり気ないズート・シムスのサックスも上々

  • Back in my Cali days - always and forever....

  • RIP Phoebe!

  • how i miss those sundays my ex mother n law would play this as she cooked for me and my ex wife....good times.....

  • my mom loves this song rip phoebe snow

  • I love her music so much...R.I.P.

  • This will always be on my 2nd record album, called "Sound Explosion" by Ronco, a label kind of like K-Tel. I was so young in 1975; that's when my Grandma was still alive. God bless Phoebe Snow!

  • like crystal clear water.

  • The last note of POETRY MAN is "so beautiful" I remember seeing phoebe Snow in the audience of a Laura Nyro concert, and she was as blown away as the rest of us over Laura's performance, Not only could she (snow) sing but she had great taste in music (Laura Nyro). May they both be harmonizing in the heavenly choir too many go to, too soon.

  • Wow! I loved Zap Mama's version, but this is pure beauty....

  • She sings like a bird in an early morning forest alone except for the breeze of the pink and orange sunrise and dew-drenched flowers. The music of the guitar sounds so happy, but at the end of the song there is sadness. Except for the hope she will see poetry man tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow............

  • This song is too smooth for words. Until I came to listen to the song I didn't know she past away. R.I.P. she is and was a great singer.

  • Pure beauty.

  • This is a pretty song and have always loved it. Heard it the first time when it came out on the record charts in early '75.

  • Happy Birthday Phoebe & RIP. Unlike Casey Anthony, you were what a true Mother should be....

  • I was a teenager when this song came out and I loved it right away. People often think of the seventies as the era of disco, funk, and album-rock. They think of loud clothes, loud people, big hair and big flares. But the seventies had subtlety and refinement too. This song and this artist are an example of that. This song is not a ballad or a slow-drag song; it was made simply to be listen to. I miss music that is made for no other reason than to be listened to. Thank you Phoebe.

  • @tonycozart - Yes, when people mention the 70's I don't think of disco- it was more music like this really, until the end of 77/78 when disco started.

  • @tonycozart - Actually though, there was a good amount of soft soul/funk that was pleasant listening through the 70's, and as far as the big hair- the afro was very popular, but way before the later disco time.

  • @astralartist4 In my city (Baltimore) afro's started coming down in or around 1975/76. Disco was already in. Disco reached it's height around "77-78" As far as soft soul/funk; you're right. There was Kool n the Gangs's "Summer Madness," Peobo Bryson's ballads, LTD's "Concentrate On You," and other nice offerings. Artist in that day would often try different sounds. But for really fine listening- Phoebe Snow, Grover Washington, Angela Bofill, Phylis Hyman, Lonnie Liston-Smith. Deodato, et

  • What a great singer. Phoebe was a Saint. She cared for her handicapped daughter at her own house, until her daugter died of natural causes at age 31. The great people who care for the less fortunate, as Phoebe did, I know are in Gods good graces.

  • RIP baby! We love what you brought to the universe and shared with us.

  • This Tune - as Magic Today as back in 1974/5. That is all.

  • The 70's in music was so magical!!!!! Thanks for posting.

  • My son's school is doing a play about a poet...he said he neede a song for the lead dancer to dance to....I suggested this. would be beautiful with streamers. She was so much more than Hillshire Farms.

I remember how I related to the line about the mirror and it's changing image...it still takes me back to my teenage angt.

  • I was a huge fan of hers in the '70s.. so great to reminisce. What a unique and beautiful voice. Thanks for the upload

  • This song makes me think of all the singer/songwriter boys that have touches girls hearts; they know who they are... =)

  • Whenever I hear this song, I adjust the words slightly in tribute to the love of my life; a married woman. "...So once again, it's time to say so long and so recall the role of life. La, la, la ,la. You're going home now. Home's that place somewhere you go each day to be a wife...be a wife."

  • Read a great tribute about Phoebe from the recording engineer of Poetry Man. Google "Oddballs, Misfits, and Angels: A Tribute to Phoebe Snow."

  • Read this great tribute to Phoebe from the recording engineer who recorded Poetry Man.

  • Rest in Peace, Phoebe Snow. Musically, our generation had it all. Thank you!!

  • Such a unique and lovely voice. A song that is jazzy and a bringer of peace and calm. Sad that she has passed, but thankful for her music. Bless you and your daughter!!

  • 4:40 minutes of bliss, one of my all time fav. songs...if tavares didn't write that song--heaven must be missing an angel for phoebe than you could have fooled me..

p.s. P.S. love ya, thanks for giving us a little peace on earth..timeless

  • Rest in Peace Miss Phoebe Snow. . .

  • Phoebe hit #5 in Billboard, 4-12-75. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! RIP, and, Shalom, Phoebe.

  • This was a shock and a true heartbreak for me. This album one of the best I've ever owned. It fits a spot that no other could. What a shame. She had a voice and a talent that no one will ever be able to duplicate.

  • I have this album (bought it new back in the day) and play it often. What a beautiful voice and a gift unlike any other. RIP Sweet Phoebe ....

  • the good really do die young..its getting mighty crowded up there in heaven...thank you Phoebe for all you gave us

  • What a gorgeous song, one of my favorites of all time. There will never be another voice like Phoebe Snow's.

  • I was watching a video of Poco and someone wrote that Phoebe was singing with them. Song was "I can see everything"

Phoebe had such a wonderful voice, I just now learned she passed and I am heartbroken.

  • God Blessed Phoebe and she shared in the most beautiful way. . .

  • Thumbs up if RollingStone brought you here.

  • I could think of many words to tell of how I feel about this Woman, but it would not hardly do justice to how she told me of things! Things of life...things of Love...things of Me! How could she when she didn't even know me? God's peace Phoebe!

  • Really beautiful song. Rest in peace, Ms. Snow.

  • when did she die?

  • Tear's hit my face and soul no differently than they did the first time my ears processed this beautiful music and new approach to Poetry. I am so sorry for the Family and their loss of absolute perfection. Have to go and wipe my mind and face in the sadness and joy of sharing many times in life with you! People used to say I sang like you, and even looked like you...my response was "If my life were touched by Angel's"

  • The first time I heard her sing this was on the radio, (remember those?) I was driving and had to pullover to listen. It only happened one other time in my life. I was driving and the radio dj played Jimmy Mack by Laura Nyro!! Both times I was so moved I could'nt do anything but pullover and listen... Thanks for posting it.

  • She sounded like no one else. She could sing two words and you knew who the voice came from. Her talent deserved world wide recognition. A very sad loss. God bless Phoebe Snow. R.I.P.

  • Love Phoebe Snow. So sad by her passing. We really lost one of the best...

  • rest in peace dear Phoebe.

thank you for all the beautiful music.

  • One of my all time favorite songs - so sorry to hear Phoebe has left us. May she rest in peace.

  • @philmarko57 And she left us with a classic for the ages .

  • rip

  • Wonderful song, wonderful woman... The singers of today could learn a lot from the women of the 70's...

  • @heshvan

Agreed about the song and Phoebe......whaddaya mean "singers" of today? you mean "autotuned, packaged, glossy, marketing campaigns".....right?? wink!

  • This song is a very fond memory from my childhood--my mother had this song on repeat all the time. She was one of my Grandmother's favorite singers. May GOD bless her soul. ♥

  • A wonderful, floaty, sublime masterpiece!!! It was like listening to liquid velvet!!! Music should be joyful!!!!

  • There was something different about her voice and vocal inflections that moved me. And I also had a Poetry Man of my own at the time her song came out. Thank you, Phoebe.

  • I love it RIP Phobe I La !

  • I agree fenderbender92. For me that time was my whole life in front of me. I was a real romantic too so the music and the words of this song really appealed to me. very unusual and pretty with great music and lyrics. I had just fallen in love (my first).

  • RIP Phoebe

  • Phoebe, you will be sadly missed. Not only by family members, but the rest of your family that you have built over the years. We all love you and your soulful voice so much, that we have become part of your family as well. You did good in life girl-creating such sublime music for the ears and putting a freeze on it , when it came to your child and their health. God Bless You!

  • Upon learning of Phoebe Snow's death today, I cried. I cried because God needed her more than he thought we did. See you in paradise Phoebe....

  • Why can't be people nice to one another in life as they are in death?

  • @bangitslo Unfortunately, some people, while they are few, are ruled by hate and ugly-ness; take comfort in the fact that most people appreciate beauty, like this wonderful song by the late, great Phoebe Snow...

  • @bangitslo Becouse most people don't know what have, until it's gone. We all need to be a little nicer to each other.

  • @bangitslo because ppl don't appreciate shit until it (or someone)is gone we ain't shit as ppl unfortunaley everybody has there day so until that day spread love and be nice peace!

  • Then you don't know who Phoebe Snow is!!! This the song that put her on the map honey !She went on to record 15 albums all except one which is called Rock Away is on C.D.She was a Sultry Sassy Musical Genius and I knew her personally she was a friend of mine that I will miss for the rest of my life..Barbara...

  • What a voice. What a devoted mother. Rip.

  • I love this song. Reminds me of driving through Nederland.

  • this is my frist time hearing this amazing voice, and my reaction to this song is a mixture of love and deep sorrow. sorrow for the passing of such a voice, and sorrow for my generation who's music does not have the same soul. but love for a woman who faced life's hardship with such caress. R.I.P

  • I must offer my condolences to Ms.Snow's family for her recent passing . . . . She was and is a part of my love of music . R.I.P. soulsister , you are gone but will never be forgotten . . . .

  • God i love this song. It brings me right back to the spring of 1975 in college in Albany, NY. beautiful and so unique. haven't heard anything quite like this since. You touched my soul Phoebe and although you are gone from here now you will never really be gone in our minds!

  • @Jimbo8137 Her song evokes memory of college, and yet I am only going unto my second year. Isn't amazing how two people with capacious years between them have at once one song that can allude to memory? Phoebe Snow is an artist I doubtless think will have the same effect on later generations. The kind that lives forever.

  • Rest in peace Phoebe. Those are some really great tunes lady.

  • SUCH a beautiful song. I will miss her, but I am glad she is with her daughter again. Rest in peace.

  • to think this beautiful person is no longer here on earth good bye phoebe we will miss you

  • Very sorry to hear of her recent passing- rest in peace, Phoebe! A beautiful & carring lady- she personally cared for her brain-damaged daughter for years till she passed away. Great memories of the '70's everytime I hear this beautiful song. It's ironic that she moved away from easy-listening music to more jazz-pop flavors(and even gospel) latter on.

  • Such a beautiful song from beautiful person, may you and your daughter find peace on the otherside together forever , we will always remember your voice, like an angel...

  • RIP Phoebe Snow. Another fantastic singer lost.

  • I know who Phoebe Snow is but I've never ever heard this song before

  • touched me deeply during a hard and searching time of life.....helped thru it!......RIP Phoebe

  • touched me deeply during a hard and searching time of life.....RIP Poebe

  • RIP Phoebe

  • Bye Phoebe. I always loved you and your music touched us deeply. Sorry you had to leave us so early, girl. :) RIP

  • Phoebe's music takes me back to a kinder, gentler era, hence that haunting sound of hers. RIP

  • Howard Stern did a nice touching tribute to his friend Phoebe on his show. Amazing voice.

  • cool, suave, romantic . . . sing your heart out now at your new address in heaven, Ms. Snow . . .

  • I'm The Poetry Man. WOOT!! }:o) R.I.P Sista Snow. See You in the Resurrection.

  • RIP Legend..

  • Phoebe Snow, empress of the blues... RIP Phoebe.

  • Thank you, Phoebe Snow - you were my BFF in Portland, Maine, 1974 when I had - NO ONE - but - YOU....What a TRUE BLESSING you were... Hope to meet you in Heaven!!

  • R I P Phoebe Snow...... All the great artists are leaving us (in ONE way or another) or HAVE left us........

  • Get a high quality version of this and listen on headphones. It's truly an amazing performance and recording. Check out the reverb on the vocals in particular.

I would venture that there is nothing like it being produced today because the business and the devices have changed so much. eg. who is actually going to hire a pro harp player just to add texture to a acoustic guitar song?

Now I just have to find the vinyl and really hear it. RIP Poetry Woman.

  • @pdxktv well said.

  • @pdxktv I completely agree! I am listening to it on my shure in-ear monitors, and that reverb on the vocals is unreal! The performance is what is really special though, its simply perfect on a techincal level, and an emotional level. It's so emotional, it's really beautiful. Its an amazing arrangement. The harp is panned and mixed perfectly, and the hand percussion is just stellar! This is one of the most well thought out arrangements I can ever remember hearing.

  • talent lives on forever.....this song and voice will forever be remembered......

  • She was my John Lennon.

  • Something about this song...not many songs evoke such a strong sense of time and place for me, but this one will always be High School, Fall of 1975..lotsa football and keggers afterward...lol..R I P Phoebe.

  • R I P Phoebe...your voice "made things alright...ooh yeah..."

  • "You're going home now..." but too soon. RIP Phoebe Snow and thanks for the music.

  • Is it just me or is it really sucking that all the great talents are dying off leaving us with no one to fill their shoes. Atleast they will live on forever through the treasured music they have graced us with. RIP Ms. Snow. May your daughter and you fly in heaven together and may you grace God with your wonderful voice.

  • @cjkrieg98 EXACTLY! SOOOO TRUE

I made a comment similiar to yours!

  • a song that gets to the marrow

  • Your voice will now fill heaven with the same sweet sounds that we have enjoyed on earth all these years. Thank you & God Bless, you will be missed by all of us who continue to enjoy your music. ~sjhgm1~

  • Does anyone have a complete version of her, Linda Ronstadt, and two others singing Travelling Wedding Band that appeared on Saturday Night Live?

  • A great talent which will truly be missed.

  • nothing like good music

  • Pheobe you have been so much apart of my life.

  • R.I.P and be happy for ever

  • R.I.P---- SWEET, TALENTED LADY !!!! IM SHOCKED & VERY SADDENED.....

  • R.I.P..............Phoebe.

  • RIP Phoebe :(

  • R.I.P. Phoebe Snow.

  • Rest her soul.

  • The saddest part of this is that I heard about her the day she died.

    Beautiful song:)

  • RIP, Phoebe. I'm sure the first angel to greet you was Valerie.
