Well said. The fact is that they both bring something to the table. Jack is a brilliant player and his sound is incredibly sharp. Dan, on the other hand, brings a slower, more simple sound with blaring distortion, which makes him remind me so much of Jimi in that aspect. Jack, I find, is more part of the new school than Auerbach. He brings a very punk rock style to the table whereas Dan takes a more traditionalist approach. In the end, just depends what your poison is :)

Besides this is simple pop rock music we're talking about, it doesn't take a great guitarist who knows all the chord inversions or even practices everyday to play this. He uses a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal, and when he picks, he hits the strings with the back of his hand too. It kind of mutes the signal, and makes it sound like that. Its not hard to do.

Sometimes I feel that JW uses this as an excuse for covering his performance.

There is no doubt, IMHO, that JW/WS are innovative and create some ripping music, but sometimes it can be substandard performance(ie:crap), but very few (audible) commentators concur.

Jack uses the digitech whammy pedal (check it out, crazy effects!!) which "messes" with the actual tuning. It has a drop tuning setting, think it was 2 whole tones...not exactly sure. I think that's the answer to your question. cheers!
