Fuck, now I want to get Ubuntu back. I dual boted it on my old comp but it SEVERELY reduced performance, making gaming almost impossible on Windows. Now that I has a supercomputer I don't want to screw it up like my old comp.
hey like the vid, im a newbie to linux n i wud luv to hav all them effects on my pc got 1.5ghz mem ati raedon hd3200 amd athlon x2 2.2 wats can happen for me...
It's hard to say, should be possible. A lot depends on your video card. You can try going to the ubuntu forums and seeing if someone has posted something about your specifik video card.
@staralfur85 Hi, nice video, how do you chane the baclground of your windows? i can only change color but i cant put and image like you and looks very very nice,
You can do other stuff with computers than play games you know.
But anyway, a lot of people actually do play games on Ubuntu, there are whole forums dedicated to just that. It's more trouble but it's very much possible.
I just dual-boot if I want to game. It's not really hard to keep a win installation and a few gigs seperate from the ubuntu installation.
browser gaming, and etc... if you want to play games, play it on a ps3 , or a 360. Im willing to give up the "very few" games i play, for having to deal with the generic windows operating system.... It boots and runs a lot smoother, and no longer locks on me.
Really? If you know nothing in the world about computers except Windows is all you get Linux will be more meaningful than Ubuntu? Do you run around calling Apple OS X "Darwin"?
Yeah okay then what ever.
What did I say that was wrong about GNU?
Presently I'm using Ubuntu 8.10. Not that it's important. I could be a Darwin user.
Thanks for sharing the video. Just make sure you say it is Linux or Ubuntu/Linux instead of just plain "Ubuntu" at the information box. Also make sure to publish your PC/Laptop specs. That way it'll be a little more informative for different people with different needs. Cheers.
What's wrong with plain Ubuntu? Ubuntu is the whole distribution of which the Linux kernel only makes up around 2%. The rest of the OS is made up of GNU packages, KDE/Gnome desktop environments and various other FOSS, OSS and proprietary (ATI/NVIDIA drivers etc) software projects.
Nothing wrong with it if you don't know what a GNU distribution is. This posts are made for everybody, not just for people like me who can make a real GNU system by themselves or Ubuntu lovers. "Linux" is a name likely to be better understood by regular people/Windows users. By the way, the kernel is what makes your computer behave as it does. If you don't mind that "2%" I guess you are using Hurd right now. And your claim about "GNU packages" is plain wrong.
The theme is a bit of a mix, but I think I got the dock's background from one of the default themes in the 2.0 SVN version of cairo-dock.
The icons come from an icon pack called "buuf", you should be able to google it or find it on deviantArt.
Installation instructions for the cairo-dock should be easy to find on the cairo-dock wiki page. Youtube won't allow me to link, but the site is in french, so that should indicate if you've found it.
The wiki is in english though (link on their page).
Hi nice video, i was just wondering what theme youv'e got running there and how have u got a background image on your nautilus file manager i don't think ive come across that before
More useless Ubuntu Desktop effects. It's rather boring really, watching some window dragging, some cube, etc, what does all this do for the user? Nothing! Windows may not have all these eyecandy but one thing is for sure, it does every thing you want, which woudl u prefer?
Personally i have not found one thing that i could do on windows that i can't on linux, so far being perfectly honest i found largely the linux alternatives to be more comprehensive (games excluded), as for the operating system itself it is FAR MORE customisable and much more user friendly. With the absence of security issues a nicer interface AND FREE software are you sure you really know which you'd prefer?
Oh is that so? Let me see you use Ubuntu and convert music and videos into any format known to man, easily without hacks and craps and terminals. Please do not start with the classic Ubuntu propaganda nonsense.
Maybe a tad closed minded Vames, Ill admit Ubuntu/ Linux can seem annoying and fiddly at times.. especially if you come with a windows mindset, but its hard to overlook some great features it brings to the table too ;)
Is Windows free? Does it include any useful writing, spreadsheet or imaging applications?
Does it need to be defragmented every week to stay "fresh"?
My point being that windows does not do everything _I_ want. I'm fairly new new to linux but it does seem, that apart from a few applications and the world of gaming, Ubuntu can do everything Windows can and more.
Also, a lot of people do want their OS to feel more interactive and lively... Ubuntu definitely exceeds windows by miles in that area.
Maybe if Ubuntu weren't free and the open source programmers were being paid you'd be using a better product. The term free is so stuffed in Linux fanboys that you all forget that there are developers and programmers out there who need to make money from their profession to take care of family etc.
That is why there is so little support for Linux on the software front, until you guys accept that not everything can be free then the majority of dev out there will always stay far from Linux
The point of it is not necessarily that it is free software in monetary terms but in the availability of the source code and users ability to obtain that code manipulate it in any way they see fit and redistribute it so that others may benefit. As for developers making money. They are either people working at cannonical and earning money through customer support or simply end users volunteering their time, usually in all honesty as they enjoy doing so.
Huh? Linux is used to run servers, used by some big corps, so? That doesn't help consumers, you know, people who want to do everything on their PC without getting down into the technical stuff, people who want to install any application etc.
Linux fans like you always come up with the server thing, as if it matters to normal people, ha.
I don't understand why you are so heated over this. Calling people fanboys etc.
I'm pretty sure no one here lives for their OS so this all just comes down to what you prefer. I prefer linux atm, because it's very customizable and does everything *I* need it to do.
I also happen to think it looks better. That doesn't mean I think everyone should use it.
In fact, I find it quite understandable that people who only use computers for a couple of tasks every now and then, and...
don't want or need any customization, only use the OS they are accustomed to.
You can't deny that linux does offer things that windows doesn't, just as most reasonable linux users won't deny that for the less-pc-literate people, windows and mac are easier.
So you find desktop effects boring, and linux doesn't work for you. That doesn't make it true for everyone else.
So Vames, you under the impression that having one dominant OS is in the best interest of the consumer? Also, I'm not sure when you last tried linux but if you want to install something..try 'add/remove programs'..i'd say a total of 3/4 mouse clicks depending on if you know what u want to install. For the record, I'm not a programmer or anything of the sort..I'm a politics student.
I actually have not experienced any problems using cairo-dock. I am actually using the new 2.0 SVN version so that might be the reason, but I haven't had any troubles with it since I installed it over a week ago (and I have tweaked it *a lot*).
And yes, a lot of people find the desktop effects rather distracting. As a matter of fact I've turned off quite a few for just that reason, the ones I have and show in this video are the ones that do not bother me.
If I was going for nothing else but usability, I would probably skip some more effects but I do like the screen I'm staring at all day to look *fancy*.
I don't see anything new here... Just some linux person dragging his windows around. Back when I used Ubuntu, I found the effects where the windows jump out of the way, and the cube desktop switcher to be really distracting and counterproductive. I think that the best setup is just a combination of the desktop wall and the scale switcher. Aside from that, most of the other effects are really quite useless and just serve to entertain me as I boredly drag my windows about and watch them contort.
Fuck, now I want to get Ubuntu back. I dual boted it on my old comp but it SEVERELY reduced performance, making gaming almost impossible on Windows. Now that I has a supercomputer I don't want to screw it up like my old comp.
