Nobody in the entire hollywood business can portray the emotion james franco portrays to the camera... simply, breathtaking performance every time.. he never disappoints. he devotes himself to the character like nothing else matters. He should get the part.
I would definitely have to say Robert Pattinson. He has the vocal chops to handle the role. Pattinson could interpret the late and great Jeff Buckley because he has that aura and same level of love for music that Buckley had. Franco is very talented and gorgeous but in terms of finding Jeff Buckley, Robert Pattinson is the one actor that I can see playing this role and doing it justice.

@25BMZ If you compare their singing, the odds get even worse for Rob. At least looks-wise, you can tell Rob tries to copy Jeff's floppy hair. They aren't similar at all in singing. Youtube "Jeff Buckley's vocal range", Dido's Lament, Corpus Christi Carol, So Real, Grace, etc...basically every song Jeff sang that's not holding him back vocally like Hallelujah.
Like others have mentioned, Pattinson has a limited range and sings more like Scott Stapp of Creed, Micheal Bolton and Eddie Vedder.
Maybe it would be better to compare them singing, looks alone won't get this movie made. Also, out of respect & love for her son (Jeff Buckley ), I'm sure his mother will be very careful about who gets this role. Jared Leto and James Marsden are also in the mix.

I've been watching "the event" on hulu and Jason Ritter seems to look a bit like Buckley. I don't know if he can sing or play guitar but I think he's got that "serious to funny" thing going on plus everyone compares him to his dad John like the comparisons of Jeff to his dad Tim. I just don't think any movie could actually do Jeff justice and basically we should forget about any Buckley biographic. I'm guessing he would've thought it was a stupid idea.

i think patinson would do the role more justice. as a singer pattinson gives off the hint of an artist that's mysterious, creative, dark, haunted & haunting, dramatic, and penetrating (all be it, not nearly as much as our jeff did) - this essence can't be faked or imitated. and if you watch some of pattinsons indies his characters seem to have elements of these qualities. and for me the bottom line is that i want, need, this biopic to tear right in through my heart, just as jeffs singing does.
@chocolatenpeppermint Jeff was neither dark, haunted, mysterious, or whatever cheesy phrase you folk like to project on him. I have seen all of Rob's films (save for Nibelungs) because I was curious about his acting and he's got zero resemblance to Jeff. Not physically, not musically, and certainly not emotionally. Rpattz is too ugly to play Jeff Buckley. Jeff didn't have a ginormously flat, chubby, pancake face. Pattinson can't even sing like Jeff. Buckley actually had range and proper diction. He didn't have to strain because he was a high tenor unlike baritone Rob. Jeff was also a godlike guitar player. Rob only knows basic chords. I can't believe Robert had the nerve to even talk about starring in a biopic. Who does he think he is? Talk about miscasting. Miley Cyrus might as well play Nina Simone.
James Franco's personality is far more compatible with Jeff. Robert Pattinson's appeal to the teeny bopper element clashes with Jeff Buckley's persona. Only if you are tone deaf. Robert's voice isn't even remotely close to Jeff's voice. Not even in tone, let alone range. Just search youtube for Jeff's vocal range.
Jeff's full voice could reach well into the 5th octave. Rob's full voice cracks at a measly G#4.
Jeff had excellent power and diction. Rob has poor diction and barely enough power to sing in falsetto. Pattz couldn't even dream of singing "Corpus Christi Carol" or "Dido's Lament".
Maybe a Buckley song on the background would be more in place :p
Anyhoo, Franco totally wins this, their alikeness is incredible, not so with Pattinson, and, as for the singing, neither of both could even ever messure up a quarter of Buckley's singing, to me he's the best vocalist ever! Robert Pattinson would attract teenaged girls to the theater causing an impression of a teen movie and turning off all other potention viewers. Jeff would hate his life story to be put in movie form and hate even more for it to be displayed as a teen flick. No one would sit in a theater and see Robert as Jeff. He's too big now. James is a low-key actor who has proven his biopic skills as James Dean.

I agree with florafawna. And anyone saying that Pattinson can sing like Jeff has clearly never heard Jeff "belt it out." Check out my video of Buckley's vocal range for proof. Pattinson has to shout to reach short 4th octave G#s in full voice. Anything above that - Rob has a hard time hitting without a weak falsetto. On the other hand, Jeff was able to reach & sustain 5th octave G5s & G#s in full voice. Buckley was also able to wail a full C5 for 20 seconds! Pattinson can't even go that high.

Being a long time fan of Jeff's, I hate the idea of an actual movie being made. We all know that Jeff would hate the idea. He hated the thought of being a product of Hollywood and this movie is going to make him that. Not a big fan of having a film/doc about Jeff Buckley. None of these kids can pull it off and we all know why. Jeff was just too special and unique....Anyway I would have to go for Franco. There's a case to be made for both. I mean, Pattinson as already proven too be a much better actor than franco with only half-dozen movies. Frankly i'm not crazy abut this idea of having a film, but if it's gonna happen, either one of them would be good.

@25BMZ If you compare their singing, the odds get even worse for Rob. At least looks-wise, you can tell Rob tries to copy Jeff's floppy hair. They aren't similar at all in singing. Youtube "Jeff Buckley's vocal range", Dido's Lament, Corpus Christi Carol, So Real, Grace, etc...basically every song Jeff sang that's not holding him back vocally like Hallelujah.
Like others have mentioned, Pattinson has a limited range and sings more like Scott Stapp of Creed, Micheal Bolton and Eddie Vedder.

Maybe it would be better to compare them singing, looks alone won't get this movie made. Also, out of respect & love for her son (Jeff Buckley ), I'm sure his mother will be very careful about who gets this role. Jared Leto and James Marsden are also in the mix.
This might also explain Franco's sudden obsession with all things Twilight and Pattinson. Pattinson does sing, Franco, I can't find any videos. Jeff's mother wants the star to do the singing according to the media.

I've been watching "the event" on hulu and Jason Ritter seems to look a bit like Buckley. I don't know if he can sing or play guitar but I think he's got that "serious to funny" thing going on plus everyone compares him to his dad John like the comparisons of Jeff to his dad Tim. I just don't think any movie could actually do Jeff justice and basically we should forget about any Buckley biographic. I'm guessing he would've thought it was a stupid idea.

i think patinson would do the role more justice. as a singer pattinson gives off the hint of an artist that's mysterious, creative, dark, haunted & haunting, dramatic, and penetrating (all be it, not nearly as much as our jeff did) - this essence can't be faked or imitated. and if you watch some of pattinsons indies his characters seem to have elements of these qualities. and for me the bottom line is that i want, need, this biopic to tear right in through my heart, just as jeffs singing does.

Rpattz is too ugly to play Jeff Buckley. Jeff didn't have a ginormously flat, chubby, pancake face. Pattinson can't even sing like Jeff. Buckley actually had range and proper diction. He didn't have to strain because he was a high tenor unlike baritone Rob. Jeff was also a godlike guitar player. Rob only knows basic chords. I can't believe Robert had the nerve to even talk about starring in a biopic. Who does he think he is? Talk about miscasting. Miley Cyrus might as well play Nina Simone.

James Franco's personality is far more compatible with Jeff. Robert Pattinson's appeal to the teeny bopper element clashes with Jeff Buckley's persona. Remember the People magazine affair when Jeff was horrified that he was cast as the 11th most sexy.... ? That was when he started to uglify himself. Franco is the far better choice.

Nah. That quote was taken out of context by the Twifans because they know RPatts can strum a G chord and mumble over it. Jeff's mum actually said, "Whoever gets the part won't be able to fake it." She was simply talking about acting. Jeff was quite the character after all. Franco (after meeting with Jeff's mom) even said he would be miming if he took the role.
Mark Rendall would be the ideal choice. The right age, height, build, vocal tone, plays guitar and looks even more like JB than Franco.

Neither! If JB is portrayed in a film, a talented unknown needs to be found. James is a talented actor but appears too old to play JB and he resembles Tim Buckley more. Pattinson may be eye candy to some but I do not consider him as such nor a serious actor who should attempt such a role as JB. Would those who follow Pattinson even know who JB was or would it matter as they would go see the movie just because they are obsessed with him? I pray that JB's mother doesn't allow a film period.

Only if you are tone deaf. Robert's voice isn't even remotely close to Jeff's voice. Not even in tone, let alone range. Just search youtube for Jeff's vocal range.
Jeff's full voice could reach well into the 5th octave. Rob's full voice cracks at a measly G#4.
Jeff had excellent power and diction. Rob has poor diction and barely enough power to sing in falsetto. Pattz couldn't even dream of singing "Corpus Christi Carol" or "Dido's Lament".

Robert Pattinson would attract teenaged girls to the theater causing an impression of a teen movie and turning off all other potention viewers. Jeff would hate his life story to be put in movie form and hate even more for it to be displayed as a teen flick. No one would sit in a theater and see Robert as Jeff. He's too big now. James is a low-key actor who has proven his biopic skills as James Dean.

I agree with florafawna. And anyone saying that Pattinson can sing like Jeff has clearly never heard Jeff "belt it out." Check out my video of Buckley's vocal range for proof. Pattinson has to shout to reach short 4th octave G#s in full voice. Anything above that - Rob has a hard time hitting without a weak falsetto. On the other hand, Jeff was able to reach & sustain 5th octave G5s & G#s in full voice. Buckley was also able to wail a full C5 for 20 seconds! Pattinson can't even go that high.

I agree with others, Jeff would have hated a biopic. He said as much in interviews. The only thing that mattered to him was the music living on.
I believe this is his mom's vision, which will inevitably be biased. I read that Jeff was close to cutting her off when he was alive. I'm not a big fan of hers. Anyhow, if a movie has to made, Franco is the best choice. I wish a picture of Jeff with short hair was shown, that is when you can see the incredible resemblance between the two.

Unfortunately that hasn't been confirmed yet. Anyone with a imdbpro account can update the actor's projects. That hasn't been a word on Franco's side regarding this project. Which is a bit a of a shame, cause if it has to be done, he's the only one that could play him.

Being a long time fan of Jeff's, I hate the idea of an actual movie being made. We all know that Jeff would hate the idea. He hated the thought of being a product of Hollywood and this movie is going to make him that. And I certainly don't want someone like Robert Pattinson playing him when that will make Jeff's work into something that screaming Pattinson fangirls can throw away once they're tired of it.
If I HAD to choose, the only person I would even consider would be James Franco.

Not a big fan of having a film/doc about Jeff Buckley. None of these kids can pull it off and we all know why. Jeff was just too special and unique....Anyway I would have to go for Franco. He can get into JB's character. I can see him playing him. Pattinson mmmm too young...not too much acting skills.

There's a case to be made for both. I mean, Pattinson as already proven too be a much better actor than franco with only half-dozen movies. But Franco is a good actor and he is extremely similar to Jeff. Also Franco doesn't have the stigma of being in twilight. Frankly i'm not crazy abut this idea of having a film, but if it's gonna happen, either one of them would be good.

I think they both should be in the movie.. Franco as Buckley and Pattinson as his guitarist in his "Jeff Buckley band"band(cant remember his name)... Am I the only one who thinks that?
