Loved many of Guy Fieri's recommendations, but I have to wonder what the selection process was on this. Very ordinary chicken, gizzards, buffalo wings, and macaroni/cheese. Soaking chicken in salt water and deerp frying at low temperature, as described, does not produce anything exotic. Fieri usually goes for spices, flavors, originality. Patrons were all elderly, working class folks. Environment smells of oil. Ho hum!
@PalJoey1957 It's partially because it's considered historic. They really do have the best fried chicken I've ever had. You don't get a lot of good southern cooking in Illinois, especially the closer you get to the city, so this is a nice change. Plus the creamy chicken dumpling soup is probably the best I've ever had. And they've got some awesome drinks on the bar side.
Mac takes 20 minutes to bake? Take into account the 15 minutes it probably takes for the chef to start making the order, on top of the 5 minutes it takes to prepare- you are looking at a 40 minute wait. Sheeeiiiit I hope that place is worth it.
@ALLurBASESrBELONG2us make a bechemel add cheese, put cheese cause on bottom of dish, put macaroni on top of cheese sauce more cheese sauce on top with some cheese on top of that and put in oven, its not hard...
This doesn't make sense. 10 minutes for the pasta and 20 minutes for the oven. So you got a customer waiting out there for ~40 minutes for their food? I think not.
Just went there today with my fiance' for the second time, the fried chicken is legendary! The best fried chicken that you will ever eat and we were greeted by Patrick Rhea the owner when we paid for the check.
he actually did once when he tried a burger with peanut butter, he basically took one bite and said "i wanna go home" and laughed cause he didn't like it
Me and my Girlfriend drove 35 minutes to eat here and let me tell you it was worth the trip. She had the Mac and Cheese and I had the chicken basket. It blew me away. Best fried chicken and Mac and Cheese I have ever had in my life.
I live up the street from this joint. It is good food, but you've got to pay for what you get.
I don't eat fried chicken from fast food joints. I just don't care for it because there's no quality to it. It just the worst food that you can waste money on.
But I do like the fried chicken at the chicken basket. the skin on it isn't just textureless grizzle and the meat itself is very moist. The mashed potatoes are also good with just the touch of rosemary that they put it.
Shut up dude don't think you are smart...obviously you do not know shit about culinary arts...There are two types of brines 1) Wet Brine contains water, vinegar, etc...2) DRY Brine Salt, Sugar, pepper...grant it the meat must stay preserved longer with the DRY BRINE but its still a BRINE so yeah before you throw your two cents in check your source and don't talk from your ass
Ummm. Rude much? Have a little respect for one. My bad, I was always taught brines had water. Usually if you covered something up with salt and such it would be used later for confit or gravlax for salmon. I didn't really put two cents in si calm down and relax.
u can always tell when guy thinks the dish is ok and not great. usally when it's great he has some type of saying to it. when he thinks it's ok he says that it's good.
Yeah, sometimes he'll take a bit and look thoughtful and say, "So you've got some sweetness from the onion, a bit of crunch from the tortilla chips, and the rabbit is tender...this is good," and you get the idea it didn't blow him away. Other times he raves, "Oh wow, this is off the hook! My knees are buckling!" and you know he found a winner.
Place is great, just east of Rt 83 and north of I-55, 25 minutes from downtown Chicago!!!! Exit Rt 83 (N),(Turn right at Denny's/Mobil and follow frontage road east to Dell Rhea's).
I love Guy!!!!

Dell Rhea's Route 66 Fried Chicken recipe
Salt chicken, cover and refrigerate for 24 hours
Dredge chicken in flour

Dredge in bread crumbs
Allow chicken to rest in fridge for 4 hours

This place sucks!!!!!
I went there with my buddy tonight. The chicken he made on this video is TASTELESS!!!! KFC is better!
The soup was good, the salad bar is 100% straight out of Jewel/Osco if not worse.
The price???? $21 with tip for a freakin pot pie and Route 66 bottle of pop!!!
That is INSANE!!!! Now I was to punch Guy Fieri in his sun-baked nose!!!
