I don't like how they just zoom in on the crying gymnasts instead of showing portions of the rest of the competition. It's like their cameras are attracted to tears.
When Shawn walked onto the floor in Bejing, Nastia yelled come on Shawn, knowing she could be beaten but she still supported her friend. I see nothing from Shannon towards her team mates, nothing towards Dominique either.
@mrpatriot83 this is actually not true. Even Dawes scores on floor and vault from the team finals would have given her a total of 37.236 to Lilia's 27.255. And the scoring in team finals was higher so it is unlikely she would have gotten the same scores for the same routines. Her event finals floor routine was better and got a lower score. Dawes actually had a start value of 9.8 after the miss, .5 for the fall, and .1 for the OOB, so her score was probably only going to be 9.8 in fact.
It's funny how fast that American crowd shut up after Dawes and millers stepped out. Not that I'm bashing miller or Dawes in anyway, it just that American crowd is so ignorant and rude when it comes to other gymnasts performances. I do feel bad for Dawes and miller, but it was lilia's moment. :)
I love how Miller and Dawes are so warm and comforting of each other there..A real team. Does Shannon know she isn't the only one upset at that moment?
Though it is the only time that the arena is quiet enough for the gymnasts to think straight and hear their music.
But obviously her's wasn't as big a fall as Dominique Dawes. It's really awful on both accounts. But Dominique's coach had even said that she wasn't surprised that Dominique had fallen. She said that Dominique had looked panicked when she was getting ready for it because she was getting so nervous.
Is it just me, or do Americand often choose Russian-themed music for their floor routines? Whenever and American gymnast is on the floor there's this balalaika thing going on. Well... very often..
Shannon wouldn't admit it in interviews or in any of the books written about her, including the one by her mom, but she wanted this AA gold more than anything she had ever wanted in her life. She believed she could win it. I believe she could have too.
I bet Simona's thinking, How come every time I do one of my routines, that little pipsqueak is doing one of hers and all those little brats keep squealing her stupid born-of-Romanian-parents-but-NOT-Romanian name?
Simona does have tons of class, so she just sucked it up. I probably would have gone over there and tied Little Moceanu's legs together and told her, "You stay off appratus while I'm competing or I'll take you back to Bela's ranch and feed you to the ostriches."
Her beam was a bit . . . sluggish. But it could be argued that Lilia only won gold because of Dominique's and Shannon's mistakes. In the end, isn't it always about somebody at the top making mistakes and the one who ends up winning making fewer?
ROTFL keep dreaming. Shannon with the same scores she got on beam, bars, and vault would have needed a 9.9 something on floor to catch Lilia, a score she didnt have a hope in hell of getting. It is questionable whether Shannon would have even medaled had she hit floor. Dawes would have been closer to Lilia than Shannon but still not ahead. Also many others made mistakes too. In an event with everyone hitting Mo probably wins, Dawes probably doesnt medal, and Shannon is lucky to be 8th.
I actually felt sorrier for Dominique, because trauma is a normal part of Shannon's life. Steve just went into cleanup mode and started picking up the pieces. For Dom, this must have been a horrific shock. And I think it's cool that Kelli Hill called her "Dominichka."
By your logic would you also agree that the Americans only got gold as a team because Russian mistakes? and the fact that the Romanians showed up one member short and had injuries to girls who would have helped them win the gold?
Hella disagree, it's called skill and doing what you need to do for the gold. Everyone else has to blame themselves for the faults they had sweetheart...
When Shannon first tried to get Steve to take her on, one of his biggest issues was her constant crying and breakdowns. According to Shannon's mom, it made Steve think seriously about whether or not he wanted to coach her. All during her career with him crying was an issue. Over the years, he learned the best (and probably only) way to work with her during her episodes. He was a great coach for her.
i dont think so. obviously you are prejudiced thats why u feel that way. fiy the chinese crowd arent that quiet when their country's athletes are performing. & this is way back in 1996 & alot has changed & the olympic committee prob realised how the crowd can affect them so thats why the chi govt HIRED pple to teach the chi crowds how to cheer. w/o that im such the chi audience wd be the same 'rowdy pigs' -.-
I am good friends with someone who was at the Olympics running the flags (or something similar to that). She said nobody that was there noticed that anybody was "rowdy". They were a very involved crowd, and there are plenty of non-American gymnasts who later said they found the crowd supportive and loved their excitement.
Maybe your friend should have talked to Roza and Sveta K. And Arkayev. And Belu. The crowd was just being a crowd, it's true, but even Tim indicated it was a pretty rowdy one. I still say, held somewhere else, it would have been a very different story. (Just my opinion. I have no friends.)
@sesilu33 Look up Tianjin in 1999. Not only were the Chinese incredibly loud but they yelled insulting things to opposing gymnasts. The crowd was very, very loud but they aren't the first nor the last.
why does nbc always have that one deep voiced commenter who has no idea about gymnastics? what would be wrong with just elfie and al? or maybe a third who actually has a clue about it?
I agree with you. Lilya P may have won several medals in the olympics and world around 1995-1996 but Miller and Dawes each won more total medals then her. that says a lot.
noooooooooo miller and dawes could have both metaled that would have been so hot i cry everytime after miller and dawes did oopsy doodles on the floor
I know. While watching the 2008 Olympic women's team competition, he said,"That was a good routine," after Alicia Sacramone had like four huge balance checks and took a big step on her landing. I know he was a gymnast, but he's so stupid.
i'd cry too if i got a 9.475 and was in second place going into the third rotation then underrotated my opening tumbling pass...she never won the AA gold at the Olympic games...thankfully she didn't act as cold hearted as friggin Svetlana Khorkina did in 2000 and 2004
Well, when someone devotes their entire life to gymnastics, it's understandable if she starts to cry after a bad routine in the olympic AA. I mean, it's so unfair to see a gymnasts AA competition go down the drain bc of a bad routine, after all those hours of practice. I feel so sorry for any gymnast in that situation. Steve Nunno wasn't helping by reminding her that she went out of bounds.
Pobre D. Dawes que se cayo, penitaaaa.... :(. Bueniísima que subiste y q tenías estos videos, todavía me acuerdo de estas olimpiadas, fueron muuuuy wenas, genial las gringas y las rumanas. adios
The difficult for that trumbling pass was not count, so .4 point is gone already. Also, she sat down, although no deduction was taken for stepping out of bound based on the code in 1996, another half a point is gone. So, her rountine is starting out of a 9.1
awww i feal bad for shannon and dominique :(

Amanar was underscored - her routine was highly difficult and she performed it quite flawlessly. Her score should have better reflected that.
