Listen, you euro classical fetishists: You fail to see the subtlety of the greatest musical and poetical genre invented in world history, hip-hop. You're just looking at the superficial apects of it. As your musical taste matures beyond the infantile stage (i.e., euro classical), you'll start to totally accept my view and the view of young people around the world. People of Color now dominate the ears of most young people on this planet except for the ignorant.
@dawg00000 This is Brazilian music. Two men from Brazil - who, btw, grew up playing and writing music in this style their whole life just to create it, not to push some cultural agenda - play on guitars by an American builder and they meet a Chinese-American man playing a centuries old Italian cello. It's pretty hard to attach a white social agenda to this music.
@dawg00000 If you plan to speak for the youth of the whole planet, you should know that many young kids from Brazil play guitar in a similar way ( though less accomplished, of course) their whole life and would probably dig this stuff.
They might also love hip hop - but probably in their own language.
If we want our music to be accepted we have to realize that music can be enjoyed and understood outside of it's cultural - or commercial - uses.
Brazilian brothers Sérgio & Odair Assad, everywhere they went, garnered enthusiasm and admiration, measuring their talent and prodigious personality. About Mr.Ma, no words. Just great. He plays on the cello who once belongs to Jacqueline du Pré.
@dawg00000 You obviously have some sort of problem. Why else would somebody post the same racist, inflammatory comments on dozens of classical music videos? It's almost as if that person is just trying to get a reaction. You know what? I SMELL A TROLL!!!!!!!!
@dawg00000 You say Communities of Color, but you only mention the African community. What about the Hispanic or Native American communities? Are they not colorful enough for you?
@dawg00000 Ok. I'll humor you. How about a person who's half black? What about a quarter? What if a person is genetically African, but appears white due to albinism? Is it the skin color that makes that person a great musician, or something else? Be more specific. Is it that person's heritage, perhaps, or their country of origin?
@dawg00000 "what white folk used against Communities of Color." I'm not sure how that is relevant. I believe that you just added that portion of your comment as an inflammatory gesture - this argument is not about the repression of colored people, rather your racism against people who aren't colored. And you didn't answer my more important question: What makes a colored person a great musician? Is it their skin color, heritage, country of origin etc.
@idontneednoeducation I answered: one drop of blood of Color gives soul to that person, not musical talent, silly. It admittedly does not make the person a great musician, although white folk in Pat Boone style have been ripping off the great musicians of Color for eons.
@dawg00000 How about Asians? Do they have soul? What about people from North Africa or the middle east? Soul or no soul? "Colored People" is far too general a term - the skin color of many Greeks is close to that of those in North Africa. Also, what soul-creating chemical does that drop of blood contain? Can soul be ingested, perhaps in pill form?
@idontneednoeducation, Soul is that ineffable quintessence that confounds quantification. If you don't have it, you can try to learn at the feet of the master: a person of Color.
@dawg00000 Well, how do you know if you have soul? And you didn't answer my previous question regarding the definition of "Colored People". On a side note, the more you talk, the more ridiculous your ideas become. You don't believe this all, do you?
@idontneednoeducation, One is a person of color if one has one drop of blood inherited from a single non-white ancestor in one's foreseeable genetic past.
Hip-hop has transcended euro classical years ago virtually universally in youth culture with the exception of some white folk holding on to the last vestiges of their moribund decadent culture and Asians brainwashed by these white folk.
dog zero... Have you nothing better to do than to go from song to song copying and pasting the same stupid comments... Go find some Erhu music to listen to and stop posting here... If you don't like his music, why are you listening to it...
Ma is a yo-yo for betraying his culture. He should be playing an erhu to spread his diverse and rich culture against straight white christian male hegemony. By playing a cello, an oversized fiddle, he reinforces the hegemony. How sad.
@dawg00000 oh my word.......you are hilarious........the very idea that YOU know the only true form that music MUST take is a sure sign that you are DEAF to music ........what does hegemony have to do with beauty?
@dawg00000 What an absurd comment! Why should anyone be a prisoner of his culture, with no free will to choose to express outside that culture? No one has an obligation to "represent" whatever culture he is raised in.
@dawg00000 I only meant that Yo Yo Ma has the right to choose the kind of MUSIC he prefers. Music isn't about race. Of course, a musical style may come from a particular culture, but the music itself transcends any culture. You can't lay a guilt trip on people for preferring music from another culture. By the way, if you find Yo Yo Ma's musical choice "boring," why are you here listening to it?
@davehshs, We agree. He has the right to choose the kind of music he prefers. But I have the right to lay a guilt trip on that yo-yo. Who's going to stop me if I do it in ameriKKKa? Your other question, Why am I on this site? To remind everyone that euro classical is dying in the minds of young people, replaced by hip hop culture that will live far longer than euro classical, the music of privileged straight white christian male imperialism, colonialism, racism, sexism, heteronormativity.
@dawg00000 I'm well aware that the hip hop culture is much larger at this point than that of classical music. But hip hop music will probably have about the same lifespan that Big Band music had in the '30s and '40s. The best classical music will endure. But this is not the place to debate that. People post music for others to enjoy. If I were the poster, I'd remove all comments that were not about the music. Your judgmental, angry comments have no place here.
@davehshs, So you want innocuous comments about the (culturally constructed)beauty of euro classical and censor all other comments on youtube. You want a China version of youtube, not an ameriKKKan version, which at leasts lets people recognize the consumerist late capitalist nature of ameriKKKa. But for you, one can't be"judgmental." So no music reviews judgmental of music? I guess you want to throw Harold Schonberg into the dustbin of history.
@dawg00000 Your comments under this video are equivalent to attending a concert and loudly voicing disdain for the type of music being played. It's extremely rude and inconsiderate, by ANY cultural standard. Only an a**hole would do that. If you don't like the music being presented, then stay the hell away. People post music for the enjoyment of those who like it. Only a self-centered pig would force himself on others who came to the "concert" to enjoy the music. I'm outta here.
@davehshs, I don't dispute that she has free will to marry a boring vanilla. However, she does have an obligation to represent her culture. There are billions of strong proud males of color to choose with her free will rather than a weak privileged straight white christian male poseur like thicke.

But here is no place for such talk, and Yo-yo ma is wonderful :)
that's funny. i feel no such compunction to be led to a god Ive never believed in by beauty, even of this caliber. so i cant relate in that direction. but i must say, to know this was crafted by men, it has restored some of the faith i thought id lost in my fellow man long, long ago... Ive always felt like that about music, though...
@croon4u, How many allahs do you believe in? Do your allahs fart behind Muhammad's back, or do they fart proudly? Does Muhammad fart back secretly, or whatever when he hears empty euro classical?
Timeless !! What else expect from the greatest celist of today, and the greatest gitar duo that ever walked on planet earth considering guitar as became a concert instrument.A great example of unique mutual music language.
Yo-Yo Ma is a great artist, but I do not enjoy his excursions into popular and world music as completely as his classical performances. I feel that he does not adapt his playing style, and interprets these pieces using the conventions of classical music. His Piazzola record may be an exception, and I am forever thankful to him for introducing me to Piazzola.
tatally agree! Allthough i find this song sublime, for me (a colombian guy) his style sounds too... strange for a samba, bolero or bosanova. The soul of tango IS an exception, but I think that's because tango doesn't use special smoothness like bossa nova. I find this anyway strange, 'cause his traditional skills on oriental music i.e tiger and dragon, the silkroad proyect and the traditionall japanese sounds for me awsome!
Phew! Now you're speakin' to me! Yo-Yo hitting the heights, man!! Sergio and Odair boppin' along like they do. What a composition. What beautiful people.
I must agree this is absolutely gorgeous. It is indescribable. You always know when a piece is awesome. You can replay it numerous times and never get tired or annoyed from it. What a masterpiece. Thanks to Assad Brothers and Yo-Yo Ma...
The composer of "Menino" ("Boy", in english) is Sergio Assad. He is one of those two guitarists, that seems to be twin brothers, but aren't. Sergio Assad is a great composer and made a lot of songs in brazilian typical musical understanding.
i wish yo yo ma would have a concert here in the philippines. and that he'll bring the entire troupe of musicians he collaborated with for the Obrigado Brazil album.
well supposely the assad brothers composed the majority of the piece however it be sheer stupidity to assume yo yo ma didn't give thought into or opinion to the music. you have to remember yoy yo ma went to brazil to broaden his music knowledge and wanted to play with the best of the best, these to gained great respect while still in school and there for are not simply musicians but composers as well.
esta cancion esta de pocamadre como me encta escucharla si que me hace como que recordar y si cuando quise ver a yo-yo ma en la ciudad de mexico los boletos se acabaron en un mes antes carajo que yo queria verlo waa regresa pronto
i could just simply listen to this when i get angry because it so soothing. yo yo ma is such a great cello player does any one no if he plays a violin? but any ways yo yo ma such an amazing player! :)
Simply delightful... All my thoughts are floating in the air full of silences and melodies, all of my dream come true at least for few moment. That make me feel the wonder of our pure nature... Regards
Beautiful music. I saw this amazing girl Milica Ilic the other night on the BBC, she played the Cavatina and Evie's Song and it was utterly mesmerising and most serene musical experience only few artists ever achieve.
when YO-YOMA play's it sound's like angel's it oh so pritty with the blend of the guitar and cello it sound's vary nice. As they say its muisc that calme's the sole and i would love to thank the him/her that put this on.
that's true. you can't just have someone that is great at something and be someone totally different apart from it. ma is so kind and down to earth.. he plays his cello and sings and expresses through it but apart from his cello, he seems so calm and humble about life.. i play the cello and am currently studying for a music major (with pre-med). i have been a ma fan since i first started playing. i can say his style is an example of unbeatable cello-playing and his attitude, an example to live..
Both guitar and cello have lots of potential to express vibrating human feelings. And a boy's sentiment, most likely about his first love, is so delicately and fluidly rendered by the trio.
now if you stared reading this dont stop its really scarey!ok send this to five other videos in 143 minutes. When you are done press F6 and your crushes name will apear on the screen in big letters this is weird because it does work.If you break this chance you wont have a crush in the next five years
This may be the most interesting TRIO I ahve seen in years. What a great concept matching the 2 guitars with cello. I like the sound of this cello too. Yo Yo ROCKS!!!!
you know, I actually like this cello better than his strad. Montagnana really made better celli in some cases, excluding strad's golden period celli. I've played this particular cello, and it really is more powerful and responsive compared to his 1712 strad. (which I know is in the golden period)
OMG at about 1:15 was the first mistake ive ever seen yo yo ma make!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he starts to go up bow then changes to down bow!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Que Hermosa pieza, alguien me puede decir quien la compuso?
lZay007 3 years ago
Quién la compuso fue uno de los dos guitarristas que están en el video. Él se llama Sergio Assad.

can someone please tell me how i can get sheet music for this beautiful piece?
mc3dj 3 years ago
well supposely the assad brothers composed the majority of the piece however it be sheer stupidity to assume yo yo ma didn't give thought into or opinion to the music. you have to remember yoy yo ma went to brazil to broaden his music knowledge and wanted to play with the best of the best, these to gained great respect while still in school and there for are not simply musicians but composers as well.

Beautiful music. I saw this amazing girl Milica Ilic the other night on the BBC, she played the Cavatina and Evie's Song and it was utterly mesmerising and most serene musical experience only few artists ever achieve.

I guess one more thing that makes Yo Yo Ma a better musician is his personality~~~~love his smile all the time~~~~
aprilsky66 4 years ago 4
that's true. you can't just have someone that is great at something and be someone totally different apart from it. ma is so kind and down to earth.. he plays his cello and sings and expresses through it but apart from his cello, he seems so calm and humble about life.. i play the cello and am currently studying for a music major (with pre-med). i have been a ma fan since i first started playing. i can say his style is an example of unbeatable cello-playing and his attitude, an example to live..

With just a few simple instruments they can show incredible talent and everything seems to combine into a perfect whole.

WOW! This is my absolute favorite song from "Obrigado Brazil!" I never thought I could see it in concert. Thank you for uploading this. Amazing!

Both guitar and cello have lots of potential to express vibrating human feelings. And a boy's sentiment, most likely about his first love, is so delicately and fluidly rendered by the trio.

This may be the most interesting TRIO I ahve seen in years. What a great concept matching the 2 guitars with cello. I like the sound of this cello too. Yo Yo ROCKS!!!!
hifitz 4 years ago 3
you know, I actually like this cello better than his strad. Montagnana really made better celli in some cases, excluding strad's golden period celli. I've played this particular cello, and it really is more powerful and responsive compared to his 1712 strad. (which I know is in the golden period)

This is wonderful!! It's such an interesting piece I mean two guitars and a cello! I can only hope I can play like this one day...I love this!!

The composer is Sergio Assad, and "menino" in portuguese means "boy". The album is called "Obrigado Brazil" that means "Thank you Brazil".
