David O. Russell is well-known for being terrible with actors. I have worked on film sets and it is extremely frustrating and sometimes infuriating when directors don't have their shit together. I have watched this clip with friends who are also indie filmmakers and the common reaction is always "poor Lily Tomlin". You weren't there. You don't know what really happened.

From what i read, a big reason Tomlin's flipping out like this was because prior, David O. Russell had reduced her to tears and she was crying bitterly. That's why Hoffman was hugging her in the beginning, why she had a pained look on her face at 0:01, and why she blew her nose at 0:16.

I have friends that worked with her extensively on her one woman show, The Search For Intelligent Life In The Universe and they all said that she was a wonderful person that NEVER flipped out. In several interviews, she apologized for her actions after seeing that movie, I'd have flipped out, too. It was an exercise in futility.

I work in the industry, and believe me, this is the real Tomlin. This is not the first time she's gone on an abusive rampage - just the first time she got caught. After the shoot, Dustin Hoffman said Tomlin bullied everyone except Mark Wahlberg, and he would never work with her again in any capacity.

@quillber I know I don't know her well, but I have met Lily Tomlin, and this is NOT her normal behavior. She's a very quiet and meek lady. I have friends that worked with her extensively on her one woman show, The Search For Intelligent Life In The Universe and they all said that she was a wonderful person that NEVER flipped out. In several interviews, she apologized for her actions after seeing that movie, I'd have flipped out, too. It was an exercise in futility.

She's an Oscar nominee and has won MANY awards, including (but not limited to) 4 Emmys, 2 Tonys, 2 Peadbodys, a Grammy, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. You may not be familiar with her career, but she's a really big deal. Her ego isn't unfounded. The director also got into a fistfight with George Clooney on the set of Three Kings, so he's got a history of overseeing tension-filled sets.

I hate to sound like the "inside guy" here, but shoots go for hours and hours and hours, for days and days. High pressure, and acting is not easy AT ALL. Who knows what this director did to Tomlin before she finally snapped. - That being said, everyone else in the car is being a quiet professional while Tomlin can only seem to use to F-bomb to express herself....like a spoiled, frustrated 15 year old girl. - What's sad is that this video of her losing it is way better than that POS movie.....
