In the third Poltergeist film she appeared very chubby, when I was a little kid everyone noticed and was very surprised, those who were not up on the specifics on how she died. It made so much sense with her having Chrones and then Septic shock for that extended period of time and no one the wiser until it was too late? She died before they finished the end of the movie and then they changed the ending. You only saw a little girls back turned in a final hug scene, and it made it so obvious.

Heather DID NOT die from the flu. She died from a blocked small intestine that eventually ruptured and caused a massive infection known as septic shock. Her symptoms appeared to be a simple case of the flu, but by the time she became really ill, it was too late. The damage to her system from the septic shock was irreversible and she died. In the Henry Winkler Archive interview, he says that they told everyone that Heather died of sickness, but that she either died of murder or suicide because her father tortured her. Henry even gave an example of the torturing. He said that she came to work one days with her eyelids plucked out.

@MegaSchoolRocks That was Judith Barsi who was abused and pulled her own eyelashes out due to the fear and stress she lived with, not Heather O'Rourke. Judith and her mother were eventually murdered by her dad.

She will forever be hollywoods little sweetheart =) She was soooo amazing and tallented she brought fear, excitment and charm to our TV screens and for a chld actor shge was very mature and professional.
I nearly cried near the end of Polterguist 3 when she ran into the white mist on her one very last scene before she died.
Heather died 4 years before i was born and I REALLY miss her =(

@crazynick66 she was 12, she just turned 12 a month before she died, her birthday was the 27th December and died on Feb 1st 1988. ): yes it's a very tragic when a child dies and such a very talented kid as well.

@narutotentensasuke They assumed it was the flu and tried to keep her hydrated with Gatorade; etc. But she had a congenital condition that caused her intestine to erupt and she died of septic shock.

@RetroVideoFan By the time the doctors figured out what was going on, it was too late. They had her on meds that made her face look puffy; if you ever get the chance to see Poltergeist III (which mentions her death during the closing credits, BTW), you'll see it.

Heather DID NOT die from the flu. She died from a blocked small intestine that eventually ruptured and caused a massive infection known as septic shock. Her symptoms appeared to be a simple case of the flu, but by the time she became really ill, it was too late. The damage to her system from the septic shock was irreversible and she died. The news reported it was the flu, because accounts of what really happened were still being pieced together. RIP Heather, I love you.

@enigma800 Did you know by the way that she had had abdonimal pains for some time before her death.she'd been misdiagnosed with crohns disease & given medication for that purpose so when she began having flu-like symptoms, no-one thought to link the pain & flu symptoms together until it was too late. the newsreader (who by the way looks like george w bush) also incorrectly announced she died on the way to the hospital, she had in fact died during surgery in an attempt to remove the blockage.
