I really hope this species makes it. This is a very special snake =/
But I have to tell the video owner, I'm not saying this to sound smart or to be a jackass. But please stop calling some snakes poisonous when the right word is venomous. It just doesn't fit. 0.o
They can be quiet ill tempered some times. around east of Lake Placid Fl. where the mulk meets the sand there used to be a lot of them, I would catch them and then let them go. One time one was around the duals of a truck and I was afraid he would get killed if the driver did not see him, while I worked on getting him out his head came over between the tires, and I was looking him in the eyes, Sometimes when caught they will hiss and make spit bubbles, truely the most beautiful snake!!!
Indigoes are gorgeous snakes. I remember the handlers in Gatorland let me hold one...since I'd previously been uneducated about these snakes, I had assumed just from looking at the snake (in his cage earlier that day) that he was aggressive and poisonous. How wrong I was...he was SO sweet, I wanted to take him home with me. ^^
We are not allowed to keep and propigate the snake to relieve the pressure on wild animals but if they want to clear their habitat to build some homes or a shopping mall, that's ok.
My herpetology lab instructor has one of these in the collection (alive) and I got to hold him today. Normally, large snakes freak me out, but he was very docile and just wrapped his tail around my wrist and relaxed in another girl's palm - it was kinda cute. I have to admit, my own family has been guilty of allowing a copperhead to be killed in our yard, but now we scoop it (alive) in a shovel and put it over the fence into the woods (so our dogs don't get bit trying to sniff it).
People get all upset about Lyme disease, but they don't hesitate to kill snakes they find in their yard. They don't realize how important snakes are in the environment. Snakes will prey on the Deermouse, the main purveyor in the chain for Lyme disease transmission. The so-called animal lovers will protest deer hunts, but won't hesitate to hack a useful animal to pieces. Dumb bastards.
Yes, it is annoying how people kill snakes on sight, I get griped at for picking them up and taking them back into the woods. I have never and will never kill a snake.
"You know your in Florida when someone ignores a harmless and protected Indigo snake crossing his driveway and you know your in Miami when someone runs in their garage grabs a shovel and chops same snake into pieces "
To own an Eastern or Western Indigos you only need a license in certain states. In the state of North or South Dakota for instance, you can own either without such a license (there is no federal license for these snakes) - [Dedicated Eastern and Western Indigo owner]
That was a fantastic statement in favour of snakes. To all of those who fear and hate snakes just for the sake of it, see how that man handeled a wild snake. How calm and relaxed it was.. Exellent film!
Nice video; these snakes are a gem in our enviroment.
Few small things, though. It's important to note the difference between poisonous and venomous; poison is harmful to touch or ingest, while venom is harmful when introduced to the bloodstream. Also, while an indigo would certainly eat a snake, they're not a snake which specializes in ophiophagy. A good way to identify predominately snake-eating snakes is by their shape; their bodies are much more triangular (kraits are good examples).
Another large problem that affects them is that Indigos relationship with Gopher Tortoise burrows which are disappearing. People that often go looking for rattlesnakes will gas the tortoise burrows in hopes of flushing out a rattlesnake but in turn they kill the indigo snakes.
Indigo = baddest snake in the usa ..handsdown

they are indangered not because of collecting but because of the rattlesnake rodeos that gas the burrows that they cohabitate with gopher tortoises.
the indigo tends to remain in the gassed hole and dies.
this is the problem with their decline in GA. Loss of Habitat may be the main cause in Florida

Important to keep in our environment,
not only to eat the poisonous snakes, but to keep the rodent population in check.

Eastern Indigo Snakes eat poisonous snakes, and is the largest snake in North America.

longest not largest...largest is Eastern Diamondback
Kaimosae 4 years ago
venomus snakes, not poisonus. venom is injected and poison is exterior which is ingested or through wounds/skin. I am pretty sure at least.
