This is a different cover to the one I have on the "Candlelight Years" collection, seems they recorded this cover again...the original one is better...
What bothers me is that on the line "with Tears in my eyes" the sadness of Thomas Gabriel Fischer displayed in the album To Mega Therion is gone, no matter the band covering it. They don't even TRY to get near it. Too bad...
most opeth songs are a jumbled mess pseudo-brutal death metal riffing and lionel richie on vocals. it took a CF cover for them to sound like they weren't trying to make a soundtrack for goths/emos/metros etc
@username30055 opeth are musical geniuses! they make complex and yet brutal music. one thing opeth is not is emo. that shows how little u know about music. and if u want stright brutal, listen to bloodbath, mikeal is usually the vocalist i do believe.
i just realized, what if the drummer in a band had to take a shit midsong and he was playing double bass, what would happen? would he bare shitting his pants or run off the stage?
Well, I think celtic frost's version is great, but it sounds a lot like the original. At least Opeth add a more personal touch to the cover. But people are entitled to agree, disagree or whatever.. its a free world.
@MrQuagmire26 Well, of course Celtic Frost's version sounds a lot like the original, since it IS the original! I guess you meant to say Obituary's version?
@GodheadsDamnation yeah i know.. it was a simple typo dammit. I've been a metalhead for years.. so this is just basic facts that it was celtic frost who had the original version. it's old news dude.
wts up people...check my cover 4 this track...i cant do a vid response as the uploader wont accept my video response...plz comment and rate if possible......i tried in the previous comment to put the link but couldnt...so i am probably the only guy on youtube who covered this song...so check opeth circle of tyrants cover..
@CapnPuff69 He said he HATED them. As in, he used to hate them but he grew to love them. He said that before he prefered technical stuff and he thought the guitar was too simple and all that but he began to realize that stuff doesn't have to be complicated to be good.
While I would be the first to agree that Cause of Death is a BRILLIANT slab of death metal history, I think as far as Circle of the Tyrants covers, I "prefer" Opeth's interpretation (not saying that one is better than the other, just saying which one I prefer.)
this is not bad the guitars sound good, same with the drumming. but the vocals are laughably bad and the piano just stops the flow. the solo is very nice really it is better than the CF version. 7/10
The funny thing is that I am Swiss, like Celtic Frost, and I always felt a very deep admiration for Sweden and for swedish metal, good to see that the swedish appreciate swiss metal too! Ahah!
Prepare, Sweden, I'm earning money to go to Stockholm on Holiday!!!
@w1mp15h well you see when a band cover a song by one of your favorite bands you tend to want to listen and compare it to the original to see if the band did the song justice. it is really simple i am surprised you would not realize this.
Quite interesting. Personally I'm just used to the Obituary version. However , I do kinda like this one too. And also Celtic Frost's. I just think it's a kick ass song , no matter which way you slice it. So I guess the biggest props should go to C.F.
I'm smoking some "Blue Himalaya". And I don't really share with strangers. Obituary may have done it by numbers, but they didn't go overboard with it. You can tell that they've added their own flavor to the cover sparingly in fear of ruining the spirit of badassery that is Celtic Frost. Opeth just ruined it by turning it into another one of their own whiny indie-kid songs, which greatly displeases the metal gods.
Also, the guys in Obituary can easily beat up Opeth any day.
Doesn't sound like you've listened to much Opeth to bo brutally honest, "whiny indie-kids" - just because they have a bit of diversity to their sound dosen't render them Emo or anything other than a Death Metal band, albeit a progressive one for sure.
For the record, I love CF, Opeth and Obituary (well "Slowly We Rot" and the "Raging Death" tracks anyway, they never topped their debut IMHO). Although I do not claim to speak for any deities, metal or otherwise.
@RichVader The type of people that like Obituary are drastically different than the type of people that listen to Opeth. Obituary is sort of the stable death metal group that are basically untouchable except to bands like Death, Cannibal Corpse, etc. Even then, they are still top notch. Opeth are still subject to the scrutiny of the metal listener critics.
@cornsnicker3 I have been listening to Death Metal since it first appeared in the mid 1980s. I like and listen to both Obituary and Opeth. Ergo your assessment of the "type" of people that listen to either band is flawed. Let's face it, they are both metal bands, DEATH metal bands at that.
Opeth may be a bit more flowery and lyrical than Obituary, but we are talking about two bands that are of the same genre. Your argument seems to be based on the claim that Opeth are somehow "current" and Obituary (despite their being still active) are "classic" and therefore untouchable. This is a fallacious argument and a failure of objectivity. Obituary's presumed status as genre "untouchables" does not in any way "weight" their interpretation of this song anymore than anyone elses.
@RichVader Any analysis of any band is ultimately a matter of subjectivity, but an objective perspective begs a listener to make some prejudices when listening to a music. Take an example of Black Sabbath for instance. They are a "classic" by popular opinion and thus such a title adds to the enjoyment of their music. In terms of how their music sounds quality (in terms of recording), it doesn't compare to modern recording. A person who does a face value evaluation would use this as a negative.
@cornsnicker3 When you take into consideration their level of innovation in the 70's however, your perspective changes your overall opinion of Black Sabbath. One can approach Obituary in the same matter when compared to their contemporaries. They did a cover of Circle of the Tyrants in 1990, and you have to look at it with the lense of 1990, not the same year as this cover was made. The arguement doesn't lose weight because Obituary is one of the originals of the Death Metal Scene...
@cornsnicker3 and as a result, people will view anything they release with a higher opinion automatically. Whether or not it is logical, it is reality. Back to Black Sabbath, if I heard a song from Black Sabbath, I already would like the song more than if it was from a band that I hate, even if the song was the same in every way possible. Opeth is not Obituary and both don't really "care" about genres anyway. They are both music that play fast, heavy, and each with its own sound.
@Darkmolth in the world of death metal. obituary is great with the heavy dirty guitars, the rock solid druming, the down right nasty evil vocals. but in the world of progressive metal opeth with the bands ability to create amazing atmospheres on the fly. and the solid playing. personally i prefer death metal to progressive metal so i like obituary more but both bands are great.
Opeth is great and all, But I'm pretty sure this is a miss labelled Celtic Frost song.... if you listen to both there is no difference, so make your own conclusions.
I guess I fit firmly into the minority - always preferred Opeth's cover to that of Obituary.. I guess something clicks with me, this cover has, personally, always seemed darker - Mikael's vocals are just so fucking deep.. Nevertheless, it's all good.
Thank you for the reply and, as much as I appreciate your reply, Opeth are one of the few bands who I've been able to relate to lyrically from an early age. The fact that opeth adress darker yet less "graphic" topics has always been more appealing to me if given the choice between Opeth and the umpteenth thousandth "BR00TAL FUCKING DEATH GORE FUCK FUCK FUCKING METALL" bands who pollute the scene with meaningless lyrics and generic, done-a-million-times-before riffs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I see what you mean, but that's kind of what death metal is. It's like if you tried you sing Doo Wop with lyrics about white power-- it wouldn't work. The problem with Opeth is that they're trying to make it into prog, which it isn't and never has been.
Chuck Chuldiner (RIP), guitarist, frontman and lyricist of the legendary Death arguably the pioneer of modern american death metal, was quoted stating in an interview recently before his death, "I'm very picky when it comes to listening to music. I hate the recent clump of Death Metal bands who are carbon copies of their idols. If I want to listen to something that sounds like Morbid Angel, I'd rather listen to the original Morbid Angel."
the thing about opeth is there sound has is and always will be different from what others try to do most other bands try to copy there sound but no one has yet to successfully imitate the sound they create and that is what makes them so talented and creative its almost like they take the sound of pink floyd and mix it with the sound of modern melodic death metal makes it abstract this is what gives it its progressive sound
but for that matter these guys are the death metal floyds, they cite floyd as one of their biggest prog influences, and floyd does use alot of acoustics. these guys just use them in a more gothic style
Alot of the time I find their music pretentious and a little repetetive
they have their great moments but they have a habit of repeating the same short melodies/riffs like five times before moving on to something new for example....annoys me.
@Mrhateworker if this is the only song you heard by opeth then you my friend can go fuck yourself before talking!! and if not the go fuck yourself anyway!! :] sound good?
get your fucking head out of your ass and open your mind , veil of maya is gay but death ,atheist and cynic are fucking great band. its not because atheist and cynic have progressive stuff in their music that they sucks ,.opeth is an other story its not the same style at all .
i stand by your opinion opeth is like gods to me i love there music and this cover owns all other covers imo not saying the others are bad just opeth has a sound no one else has
Opeth brings a brilliant perspective to this song but does not supersede nor do I believe did they intend to supersede the original. Equally brutal and epic both versions. :) Thanks for posting this to YT and keep the faith!
Opeths Cover is Better than the Celtic frost i belive, but credits to Celtic for the writing of the Anthem. Like these bands Check out Scar Symmetry i think they are good.
honestly who cares who wrote the song or who is covering it as long as whoever is playing it is playing it well...... dont bash bands coz u think this band is better or that band is better..... all that matters to some is the band but sometimes the music itself is more important then the band
I think this is the best cover because Åkerfeldt has deeper vocals than Obituary's, and I think it sounds more brutal. They also sound more clean and sophisticated somehow. And Opeth has added their own atmosphere to the song, using keyboards and stuff which is pure genius. This is epic.
This is pretty much the most straight-up death metal Opeth recording.

the thing about opeth is there sound has is and always will be different from what others try to do most other bands try to copy there sound but no one has yet to successfully imitate the sound they create and that is what makes them so talented and creative its almost like they take the sound of pink floyd and mix it with the sound of modern melodic death metal makes it abstract this is what gives it its progressive sound
diaryofthedead 2 years ago
Always when a band sounds a little spacy people compare them to Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd doesnt use acoustic instruments as much for example if at all.
PennyDreadful1 2 years ago
i dont compare i just think that opeth may have driven alot of influence from them
diaryofthedead 2 years ago
but for that matter these guys are the death metal floyds, they cite floyd as one of their biggest prog influences, and floyd does use alot of acoustics. these guys just use them in a more gothic style

@MrHateworker
Alot of the early bands were rather progressive...like Atheist...and Death too....and Cynic.....Gorguts...stuff like that.
You might be into the idea that lyrics define a genre...which it doesnt!

Early Death was not progressive. Gorguts was HARDLY progressive. Maybe in the later, shitty days they got that way but I wasn't listening anymore.
Opeth bullshit, Death post-Leprosy, Cynic, Atheist veil of maya bullshit == pink frothy AIDS

@MrHateworker
Well then now that we know your some sort of sonic coprophagist I dont feel like arguing with you.
Seriously....you dont like anything thats good?
Did your ears not develop?
Did you really hate you parents so much you wanted to torture them with the most obnoxiously extreme noise you could find?

@MrHateworker
Im not a blind fan of Opeth.
Alot of the time I find their music pretentious and a little repetetive
they have their great moments but they have a habit of repeating the same short melodies/riffs like five times before moving on to something new for example....annoys me.

Metal this isn't. It's fagmusic.

@MrHateworker
Youre right Opeth does have a smoky noirish amosphere at times.
But why are we talking about cigarretes all of a sudden.
PennyDreadful1 2 years ago
i think you dont know what real metal is
pretty sure you are a 14 year old super hard deathcore fag
right?

@Mrhateworker if this is the only song you heard by opeth then you my friend can go fuck yourself before talking!! and if not the go fuck yourself anyway!! :] sound good?
IronMaidenEddy9245 2 years ago
get your fucking head out of your ass and open your mind , veil of maya is gay but death ,atheist and cynic are fucking great band. its not because atheist and cynic have progressive stuff in their music that they sucks ,.opeth is an other story its not the same style at all .

Opeth brings a brilliant perspective to this song but does not supersede nor do I believe did they intend to supersede the original. Equally brutal and epic both versions. :) Thanks for posting this to YT and keep the faith!

@joeydangerously don't forget Obituary they made a cover and it's awesome too
dimebag2506 1 year ago
honestly who cares who wrote the song or who is covering it as long as whoever is playing it is playing it well...... dont bash bands coz u think this band is better or that band is better..... all that matters to some is the band but sometimes the music itself is more important then the band
youmustdye 2 years ago 2
It doesn't matter who's cover is better. Celtc Frost rulez cause they wrote this song people
emilioshades 2 years ago 4
Obituary's version owns this.
HacknSlash12 2 years ago
That's what a lot of the faggots think.

Shiiiit i only heard this song from obituary Opeth Rules!!!
dimebag2506 2 years ago
Obituary is really better
SimulacronX 2 years ago
I think this is the best cover because Åkerfeldt has deeper vocals than Obituary's, and I think it sounds more brutal. They also sound more clean and sophisticated somehow. And Opeth has added their own atmosphere to the song, using keyboards and stuff which is pure genius. This is epic.
