I love how at the end of every battle it never plays the entire song. Only at the very end of the game does it play the second verse. It made me feel as though this was the end and there was nothing I could do about it. Easily my favorite ending to any game I'v ever played.
@TheShadowman60 That was the hardest one to kill. Only because I didn't want to kill it. It didn't attack you one bit! Not even after you started to kill it. It was the most peaceful of them all. I felt horrible after it died. =[
god damn, did anyone feel at least satisfied with yourselves after defeating a colossus? your doing this to revive your girlfriend (i assume) and the fact that a little non-muscular warrior is willing to go through the hell of fighting 16 colossi to revive his girlfriend only makes me want to defeat them more, because i want to see her revived and wander to succeed in his goal.
I know I'm gonna get spammed for this, but the Colossi were never really alive. They were just mindless husks: vessels for Dormin's essence created to kill anyone who got close to them as a safety precaution so that Dormin would never awaken.
After about the third Colossus or so, my brain couldn't take the guilt and I wound up spending half an hour trying to hunt down nonexistent Phoenix Downs to un-kill them. Way to make a guy feel like an ass, Team ICO.
Whenever I killed one of them, I felt bad after. I really felt horrible killing and after killing the ones that fly. They're so graceful, just kind of minding their own buisiness. Then I have to go and murder them. =[
I loved hearing this nice music after I killed each colossus. It made me feel accomplished because after each kill I was closer to bringing back Wander's loved one. But it's a shame what happens to Wander. :(
Seriously, when I beat my first my Colossi, I felt awesome, and then... this song played and the Colossi started dying... and then I realized that I just killed a beast that was only trying to defend itself...
One of those games that doesn't make you a protagonist. Makes you think about "Am I killing an enemy or simply trying to reach a goal?" because in the end the Colossus was just defending itself.
Actually in majority of the character-based games you are by the end a hero. You reach your goal and your goal is generally defined as good after passing a series of obstacles. This is one of those games that do not tell you whether the ending was good or bad or at least made it clear. It doesn't use the, defeat evil entity. Whether the protagonist is good or bad that is generally the goal. Everyone plays neutral in shadow of the colossus except Dormin.
That's not really my point. The character you play as is necessarily the (or a) protagonist, in any game where you play as a character. The hero is not necessarily the protagonist.
Also, I don't think it's the case that everyone is neutral - simply that there's a sufficient lack of background information for us to be unable to clearly define (ignoring moral subjectivity) who is good, neutral, bad, etc.
If they protagonist was designed with the intention of being a hero by the end of a game that's what I consider as the protagonist being a hero. I also said "majority", of course that number is decreasing because that one man army thing is an unoriginal plot that is slowly decreasing.
That second line practically means they are neutral until proven. Wander's goal is to revive the girl, not necessarily to defeat the colossus but he does anyway.
You're missing the point. Protagonist means "main character", whereas hero means "good guy". Therefore, no matter whether your player-character is good, bad, neutral, etc., he will always be the protagonist.
most people are hearing "You're a murderer !", but in my case I have a different perception of it.
To me, it's like the pinnacle of the moment, the story. It's not good, it's not bad, it's reaching lighter grounds, the continuation of the story.
Like when you explore an unknown land, a mysterious castle or field in a dream.
Like when you leave a place to discover another, the previous one dies, but it's not "violent" murder, just passing, the evolution of the story, the passing of time.
... not look at it! LOOK AT IT! Look at its lungs collapse in its final wheeze of life, you butcher. Look at the pain you caused this one of a kind creature as its life's blood drains out into the ground that bore it. Good job, hero. You've slain... a creature who just wanted to be left alone.
Why do you kill, hero? Surely not for your "loved one," she is just code. You kill because peace is too much for you to handle.
@Algamyst The incentive of the character is not the incentive of the p.layer. The girl holds little motivation to the player himself. The whole point of it was tat the players never seek out other options in the game. the never question the ominous voice, and they never think that not fighting is an option. The game is meant to cause that sort of questioning.
Ah, but if the incentive for the journey is immaterial, is the guilt not every bit as unreal? Are the questions as pointless as the rest? Is the pain of the colossi every bit as much an illusion as the ominous voice?
@Exarian i can definitely see your point, but i llok at it like this. the colossus are just physical manifestation of there spirit. they are expelled from there bodies and go into the guy. he must endure the pain of them entering and that is part of the sacrifice he must make to regain his girl.and as you see later there spirits stand over his body.so there not really dead. they probably will manifest again later.
@talleyho12 I did notice that, but I also noticed he didn't realize what was happening until the very end, so even if he wasn't killing them, he sure thought he was.
@Exarian yeah perhaps he was willing to do anything to get her back wether it was right or wrong. afterall he went to the ends of the earth to find the answers.
after a long fight with the colossi and the black blood is coming out like a fountain and you are gonna do that final strike i couldent help myself "im sorry but i hafto do this"
@Zarman91 Same goes for Yorda if you ask me. I've never cared so damn much for a character in a video game like her, always keeping her by my side, protecting her ... *sigh*

@KrimzonFlygon That does not mean that, within their existence as vessels for his soul, they weren't living creatures in their own right.

Thus he deserves my sword in his glowy head weak point.
