Not sure that I agree with focusing on going faster/slower than general flow of traffic. You should definitely be neither fastest nor slowest vehicle on the road. Best way to avoid cars from crossing into your path on highway is to avoid hanging out in drivers' blind spots, but I suppose your strategy accomplishes this.
I favor keeping right and moving left to pass. This contributes to better traffic flow and less rage. Conflict with merging traffic is every bit as manageable on bike as in car.
Overall good advice. Although I have found the opposite is also true for speed. If I ride in the slow lane (or keep left in Australia) at the limit then cars will see you and drive around you, rather than "sneaking up" behind them. People are far more likely to see you if they drive up on you rather than the other way around. Having said that, if a car is pacing me I speed up to get away from them.
Hey, that's good advice man. It's especially important to cruise slightly faster than cars around you; in fact, I always try to isolate myself from packs of cars when riding. Also, be alert and never let your guard down.
Always be thinking about your exit route in your mind. For example, since you are looking at traffic in front and behind you, be thinking about where you'd go IN CASE something were to happen. As soon as you find yourself in a situation where you'd be in trouble given all foreseeable circumstances - GET OUT of said situation. This includes the left lane as a "ditch" lane.
Also remember that when you pass traffic and approach a new set, COUNT on these new drives to not expect your presence.
hey bro ive been riding for over 2yrs now. i own a cbr600rr and actually thinking bout stepping it up to another level. id like to get an r1 but my only problem is my height. Im only 5"6 180lbs :) do u think i would have a problem riding a bigger bike?
@darickmeister I'm 5'5", 165 lbs and I ride a 95 cbr900rr with no modifications. Sure I could get more of my foot down and I'll do something about it eventually but I ride it well enough. There is a girl on the net with a blog whose 5'3" and rides a 900 also, she shaved the seat. Then there's Dani Pedrosa, the 5'2" MotoGP racer.
Oh! The benefits to riding in the left lane? My guess is that you have to worry most about the guys in the middle lane. If you're in the middle lane, you have to watch guys on the left and right, as well as behind and in front. Another benefit is if some idiot merges and doesn't see you, if you're in the farther left side of the lane, you have a couple of more seconds to react, and can slow down or move over to the shoulder.
I used to text while driving. Since I've been wanting my first bike, I've been a much more cautious driver. I constantly look for bikes and never text while driving. Well... sometimes if i'm at a stop light. but when it's green i drop my phone and drive.
thanks alot, im and going to start riding my first motorcylce (drz-400s) on the highway around June..staying on the left lane is BRILLIANT advice now that i think about it
Your bike is off the hook man! I just got this same bike but mines an R6. This is my first bike and I was actually wondering around looking for advice on how to ride on the highway, you answered my questions. Thanks a lot man!
@JJQgrandemachoguapo Great!! Mission accomplished then.. :) Remember, this ain't video game!! There's no do-overs!! On highway, you'll most likely die if u crash, so always be alert, anticipate and stay active!! Have fun!!
Very true bro. A lot of drivers misunderstand bikers especially when we go a little faster than normal traffic flow. Drivers think we are being aggressive or showing off, but really we're simply trying to create a safe distance from their big ass SUV's before they run us off the road. Good video man, keep posting them.
@80sHitz yep.. thx.. makes no sense to go slow surrounded by cars and risk getting run over.. stay away from the cars is the name of this game~~ yep~~

@darickmeister u would have to decide that for yourself.. engine size and seat height are not the same thing.. r1 is a beast.. good luck~
