The Society of Seven (formerly the Fabulous Echos) are still playing in Hawaii and Las Vegas. They have been at the Outrigger Hotel in Honolulu for something like 34 years. Tony (guitar) and Bert are still with the group.
First artist to sing Sukiyaki was Kyu Sakamoto in 1963. Released by Capitol Records in the US as Sukiyaki it topped the Billboard pop charts in the United States for three weeks in 1963 — to date the only song sung entirely in Japanese to do so.

England never got this band despite them topping Australia's chart for 8 weeks with 'Little bit of Soap". Why was England so insular to non
British/American bands. And why is it still so anti Eurovision and treat other countries music as a joke.I am ashamed.Try Earth and Fire from Holland for a musical feast !
i totally agree with you. i live in Uk and love japanese music and i am a chinese. i remember the first time i told my schoolmate about japanese music, they only listen to it for five second and then start slacking off it. saying it sounds horrible and voice of worlds are wired. and the most annoying thing is, you can never buy any collection of japanese even american music from UK HMV!!! come on, uk, embrace the warmth of music not only your kind man !
a quote from JoeWuSeattleWaUSA "I quickly learned that the boys were from Hong Kong, that four of the group members were Filipinos, the bass player was from Scotland, and their lead vocalist, Cliff Foenander, was from Ceylon. I recall wondering even then why this group, being from Hong Kong, had no Chinese bandmember."
In 1960, if you weren't in HK, you weren't in the Asian pop music industry -- you were just "in the province," the equivalent of a high-school garage band in the US.
Thanks! Im a big fan of this fabulous groups, these are top rate musicans. Compare their songs like A Little Bit Of Soap, Mash Potato, even Baby Elephant Walk, or I Know, their versions beat the originals hands down. Please upload more B-sides and albums cuts if you can!

Cliff is/ was my uncle. It's great to see him when he was so young. Memories of family gatherings and him singing are flooding my mind...

Nice video, but I wish the cameraman had shown a closeup of Cliff. He was such a little hottie!

This is Shivaree, not Ed Sullivan.
Like the song, though! Kind of Searchers-esque.
