I was a member of the ships company. In 1951 and return as boys we were the radar operators in bad visibility particularly when we were crossing from Cherbourg to Southampton.
The guy mentions the creaking, well in bad weather she would roll her guts out and the woodwork would literally shriek at you. The Queen Mary was a 'Happy ship' her Captain when I seved aboard her was "Harry Gatteridge" who docked the ship n New York during the Tug Boat strike.
This host has some of his info wrong. The lifeboats were not removed at Long Beach. There was no point in doing that. It is true that what you see now when you look at them is rather sad; like much on the great ship, they have been neglected through the years. But they are original. I don't know where this guy got that idea. Also, the engines were in fine shape; they were removed for an ill-conceived museum that never was. A terrible mistake, like many other stupid 'renovations' done to her.
@The77trip I was told many years ago, or read somewhere that "many" of the original lifeboats were removed / transferred to other active ships because they were still in such great shape. There were some duplicate "fiberglass" copies made. It was clear to see as I walked the decks looking up at some of the boats, that some were indeed fiberglass copies. So my statement is partially correct. I have tried to confirm this further, but even the experts don't know how many boats are copies.
@VMAdventures of the 22 lifeboats onboard the ship, 17 of them are original. None of the them are fiberglass "copies", the ones that you saw aboard were from other Cunard liners. Those boats occupy stations #4, #7, #16, #19, and #23. At least three of them came from the Cunarder SYLVANIA in August 1967. Rumor has it that Disney planned to make fiberglass copies for all the boats, but that never came about.
at a little before 8:04 when we talk about the banana shape a lot of boats are banana shaped still look VERY closely at canoes and some kayaks (not sit on tops) and you will kind of see that.
The fat pratt doesn't know what he is talking about, that wasn't the 'sun deck'. Why in hell's name did they remove the engines? He's right about one thing, she did creak a bit. First class corridors were carpeted.
I absolutely love the Queen Mary and have been there eight times. Its truely wonderful. I hope to go again sometime. There was alot of info. in that video that I didn't know. Thanks!
This video is really interesting. I didn't know some things in the video which you told, thanks for the information. She is an legend like Titanic, Olympic and Britannic were.
Did you know that Titanic sister ship Olympic was ready to become a hotel in France in 1935 to the present day? Sadly she was broken up, the one who purchased her had depression problems. :(
baby.... I have stayed on the Queen Mary twice in the past 6 months.... both times on A deck... once on port side and once on starboard side.... for several days at a time.. if you are going to film this amazing piece of history, stay on the vessel.... for a prolonged peroid of time.. you would be surprised how how much more you will ACTUALLY learn... including those alleged ghost sightings and apparitions.. you can touch any bit of burlwood paneling aboard her and FEEL the history
I have spent more time on the Queen Mary than most people. On this visit while filming we stayed three nights in a suite. While I was in college from 1985 thru 1991 I would bring small groups of friends to the the ship at all hours of the day and night, many times I would be onboard QM even 2,3,4 am in the middle of the night. Hours and hours and hours I have spent on QM, during six years living in s Cal, I was there at least three days a week. Never saw or felt apparitions..sorry
Thanks for uploading, I found some intersting facts.
I also see alot of similarities to the older ocean liners, like the Olympic-class by White Star Line, (The brigde construction, expansion joints, rivets and so on.)
Barry, nice video ... one thing i'd like to point out is you are correct, the lifeboats were removed during the conversion, but moreso for protection and re-finishing, they were then re-installed ... so they are, in fact, Queen Marys original lifeboats.
The part one video of Tour Of Queen Mary was very informative and you did an excellent job of putting all the pieces together............well done!! dad
Enjoyed the video and commentary, Barry, always enjoy the little known history you post! Say hello to Terri and Jacob for me and hope to see you all again at family reunion this summer in South Dakota.

I love the Queen Mary. This ship was & still is the greatest ship of all time. Oh! Wouldn't I give to visit her again.

@MrRocknRoll12321 it's the same reason they removed the funnels, a guy stepped in one and his foot went through it because it was so rotten

I love the music at the beginning. That was from The Poseidon Adventure.

To the City of Long Beach California.
Thank you so much for saving this great ship.
In the UK we cut up most of our other historic ships 50 years ago and converted them into bean cans.

It's funny how you can see the satellite dish near the funnels on minute 6:00. I bet it wasn't there back in the day. =)
