For those of you who really believe unions were the downfall of steel in America...what do you base this on? Corporate greed ruined manufacturing in America. Unions at their core gave the worker who otherwise had no voice or rights, their voice and rights. If you are trying to blame organized crime, that's a symptom of no where else to go. The problem is that every human run organization is capable of being corrupt. Give your armchair analysis all you want. Then go fuck yourself.
Here's a question then. There's still plenty of coal and iron ore in this country. The abandoned steel factory sites are still in place. So why not get all that expert union staff get together, buy the old factory plants for a song, then resume steel production and become filthy rich yourselves?
Do any of you want to answer that question? Or would you rather I do it for you?
Here's a question for you lot. We still have plenty of coal ore, and iron ore. Many of the abandoned factories are still standing. So why not get all that expert, hard-working union staff, go back to the factory sites and buy them for a song, then resume steel production and become filthy rich yourselves?
Do you want to answer that question? Or shall I do it for you?
Is very funny see the people of a falling empire blaming other countries for your decadence. The steel industry in USA was destroyed? Protectionism and import taxes do not save the steel industry or the worker's jobs. Just kept some politicians in their places. Why I modernise my plants if i have a huge market free of competition?
@YANBRAZIL US Steel didn't move to China. Foreign steel companies like Baosteel, Arcelor and Mittal, who made better quality steel more efficiently and cheaply, and greedy US unions, that didn't care about company viability so long as they could force a pay raise, drove US Steel out of business.
Now the US employers have either been ruined or chased off - and the people who did it are STILL whinging on about them, demanding they come back and pay them.
Its a shame. No, its a crime. Youngstown was a great city. It had everything one could want-- not too big, not too small; a great mix of heavy industry and agriculture; a university, amusement park, art museum, planetarium, theaters and even a symphony orchestra. It had ethnic tradition, family roots going back generations, great local restaurants and bars, and a strong sense of family values and what was right or wrong. Its mostly gone now, but I feel blessed to have grown up there.
Goot love how people say that UNIONS destroy companies/industries I think not executive destroy companies!!!! If you feel its wrong for a worker to make 30$ an hour then how in the hell is it right for this same company to pay a CEO/CFO etc.. a salary over 10 Million or even 1 Million just because they have a graduate degree? Its better if the economy has 100 people who make 40,000 than one who makes 4,000,000 becuse those 100 people buy more food, clothing, homes, vehicles etc
The mills are running great in China, now the worlds largest steel producer. I was born in Youngstown and remember the day like it was yesterday when my father came home and told us the news of the closings. 3rd.gen steelworker.

Modern steel comes from different places. A lot of tubing comes from Mexico and Japan, channel iron from Canada and Turkey. The Chinese tend sell us steel in a different form. They buy the recycled of the world, melt it down, and re-sell it to us in the form of cheap products. Not much raw building material steel comes from China. They make more off it by manufacturing it into junk we buy.
oh i know . i was just taking the opportunity to educate mrspackle. he will not drink the water even he is lead right to it and offered a cup of ice. you're right though- chinese steel is not bad, as long as they don't try to make anything out of it! we're good.

Next time get your own facts straight, ok.
Why should unskilled labor make that much money? Why do CEOs make millions for poor performance in a company while everyone else pays for it with cuts in wages, medical insurance, pensions, etc? The list goes on. Unfortunately, there will always be someone who makes more than you even though you have a 4-yr degree. Life is a bitch. Get over it.
F1circuit, I'm not finished yet. Why do I have to look at myself? I have a 4-yr technical/science degree and I know people that make lot more than than I do with less ed. There is enough blame to go around for the steel decline. Company mgmt for not updating equipment and bloated salaries, union officials, and don't forget your local politicians who did not reinvest in the city when times were good. All are to blame. Why should a worker not have a piece of the company pie?
I left for 10 years and came back to stay! I will be here forever. If you didn't like it here and left PLEASE don't come back!! I don't talk about the towns that I lived in down south that I hated. Having a great time in Youngstown!!
You don't know jack shit about Youngstown -- you lived in Poland for Christ's sake!!! Poser... This town is on the rebound, downtown is ROCKIN'... You don't like it? Get out. Asshole.
at 46 seconds to 51 is the old foreign guy ted who walks the streets of my old neighborhood on schenley yes vikingjim give me shit cuz i fled to the country but i grabbed the girls and the dogs and ran screaming .... major plus i can go naked in my yard now !!!!!!!! see ya at donnie ?
I've traveled this country of ours and can truly say Youngstown is no better or worse than other cities. Have you been to Flint, Toledo, Phili, Chicago, NY, even Pitts or Cleveland? No-matter what city you're in there is crime and decay! There are good and bad in all cities. The thing that pisses me off is people talking bad about it. If you don't like it, change it or leave. But stop being such downers about it. Stop your whining and help make it a better city!!!
The real fall of Youngstown was that the steel workers were making too much money, with too many benefits for unskilled labor. The company had to pay the employees too much and couldn't reinvest in the business to keep up with the competition in Asia. Its a shame. Now young people can't get jobs around here and they have to move away.
Not true... The problem was that the plants never modernized, especially YS&T -- once they sold to Lykes Bros., who drained the company's funds to bolster their failing ship building business.
Don't blame it on the steelworker. You can't cut someone who is just trying to make a decent living. Being a steelworker is dangerous work. Imagine working around hot steel all day on outdated equipment. Management in these steel companies did not reinvest in equipment. They took their money and ran. My brother-in-law is an ex-steelworker. He told me that he would work on equipment that was 100 years old. That company was US Steel in Pittsburgh. You don't know crap.
I agree with you rcn and it seems the more educated people are,the dumber they get! Unions built this city, the greed of management and corrupt politicians brought it down! how can you blame a man for wanting to take care of his family? Made you rich enough to forget my name!
@jrod04buc Form the unions again. The situation in America now is a class war. The rich have stolen everything from you. Make THEM pay. Or string em up.
@clarkewi That's right. You've whipped your horse to death. Now flay the bones from his dead flesh, all the while cursing him for leaving you without transport.
Go ahead. Try to wring blood from a stone. See how far it takes you.
@jrod04buc Congress with all that expensive education sold us the free trade. Now it seems like government is going broke due to the lack of tax money now coming in that the new low wage jobs can't supply. My local schools just keep on asking for money nobody has anymore. Congress just led America off a cliff with all this free trade stuff and for what? So one person could make millions at the expense of the majority? The whole thing has been a dumb deal.
The Infidels used to play at Cedars in downtown quite a bit in the late 80s/early 90s. My older sister was a fan. As for Y-town's condition, I'd have to say that while things still look bad now, it's better than it's been in a long time. If it were on YouTube, I'd recommened a video of what the city looked like in the early 80s after steel went bust. Bad times.
Every time we head back home to Youngstown I wish we could've stayed...then after we're there for the weekend I can't wait to get back out again. Love the people, in general, but that town is dead as hell. Funny thing is alot of people still there don't see it that way.
Brilliant work! Nice use of the 'Fidels too... gotta disagree with Minderaser though, future's not perfect but lookin' up... downtown is a much MUCH better than 10 years ago.

No-matter what city you're in there is crime and decay! There are good and bad in all cities. The thing that pisses me off is people talking bad about it. If you don't like it, change it or leave. But stop being such downers about it. Stop your whining and help make it a better city!!!

And yes, the Infidels used to ROCK IT...

The real fall of Youngstown was that the steel workers were making too much money, with too many benefits for unskilled labor. The company had to pay the employees too much and couldn't reinvest in the business to keep up with the competition in Asia. Its a shame. Now young people can't get jobs around here and they have to move away.

Not true... The problem was that the plants never modernized, especially YS&T -- once they sold to Lykes Bros., who drained the company's funds to bolster their failing ship building business.

fuck off douche bag!the unions built that city!

@jrod04buc You whipped that horse until it broke its reins and ran away. Now you're angry that it won't come back.
The irony is that a Marxist government you lotideologically supported is renting the slaves that replaced you.

Bad times.

You're in good company. Paulie Walnuts of the Soprano crew spent four months there in season 4.

Every time we head back home to Youngstown I wish we could've stayed...then after we're there for the weekend I can't wait to get back out again. Love the people, in general, but that town is dead as hell. Funny thing is alot of people still there don't see it that way.

Gregory is the name of that cat. His catch phrase was "What's the word?...Thunderbird."
Wonder if he's still pimpin and struttin.

It looked like my old neighborhood. I use to live on Loveland. I am so glad I got out of that hell hole.

Also love that shot at 2:25... down Yo-Po Road onto Powers, the Point Cafe -- I used to live across the street!
